Mr. Norman Edward Maki
June 8, 1929 - August 8, 2007
Norman died in Calgary on August 8, 2007, after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 8, 1929 in Hespero, Alberta, and grew up in nearby Eckville.
He spent forty-one years with the Imperial Bank of Commerce, beginning as a teller in the Eckville branch and rising through the ranks. In the 1950s, Norman worked in remote bank branches across Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan during the uranium mine boom, flying out the mine payrolls in bush planes. He survived a 1955 crash in Martin Lake, Saskatchewan, when his plane went through the ice. Afterwards, he dove back into the icy waters to retrieve the payroll.
Norman worked in numerous towns across Western Canada, as far East as Fort Frances, Ontario, with a lengthy stay in Winnipeg. He eventually retired as a senior loans officer in Calgary.
From the 1960s to 1980s he was actively involved with the Lions Club wherever he happened to be stationed.
He is survived by his siblings Darlene Taylor, Brian Lutz, his nephews Dale and Neil Speirs in Calgary, and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Central Alberta. He was predeceased by his parents Neil and Emma Maki, and his sister Betty Speirs.
At Norman’s request, no Memorial Service will be held. His remains will be interred at Kuussamo Cemetery near Eckville, where he will be buried next to his father.
Donations may be made in his name to any local Lions Club.
