It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Alexander (Sandy) Luttyck. Sandy passed away peacefully on October 26, 2007 at the Rockyview General Hospital at the age of 86 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Thelma, daughter Sandra, and brother William and family. He will be forever fondly remembered as Uncle Sandy to his nieces and nephews Jim, Randy, Wanda and Caroline. He will be sadly missed by all. Sandy was born in Desjarlais, Alberta and grew up on his family’s farm. He began a 33 year career with the armed forces by enlisting in the Royal Canadian Armored Corps in February 1942. He attained the rank of sergeant during the Second World War and continued service with the regular armed forces after the war ended in 1945. Over the course of his career, he served with NATO in Germany from 1962-1965, and the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus (1972) and Egypt (1975). He retired as a Captain from the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) in Calgary in 1975. After retirement, Sandy kept busy with his family, numerous trips to the family farm, and many wood working projects. His passion for wood working led him to design and build many specialized power and hand tools, which he used in his craft. Sandy married Thelma Wournell on February 24, 1949 in Ottawa Ontario. He, Thelma and Sandra have made their home in Calgary since 1965. A memorial reception will be held at Leyden’s Elbow Valley Reception Centre in Leyden’s Funeral Home (2nd Street and 17th Avenue SW) on Friday November 2, 2007 at 2:00 pm.
