Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia in May 1907, Aunty Helen spent her youth in the "Crow's Nest Pass", specifically in Frank and Blairmore. A career in nursing took her from Bermuda to Vancouver before she finally settled in Calgary where she spent seventeen years as an Operating Room Nurse at the Colonel Belcher Hospital. Helen is survived by a sister-in-law Wilma Welsh of Lundbreck, Alberta; a niece Pat Tompkins of Seattle; six nephews, Greg Tompkins and Kevin Welsh of Calgary, Brian, David, Kevin and Maurie Simpson. Aunty Helen was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S "Park Memorial Chapel", (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.), on Wednesday, November 12, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Cathedral on Thursday, November 13, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. WRIGHT - Joyce Irene of Calgary passed away at Agape Manor Hospice on June 25, 1997 at the age of 72 years, beloved sister of Heather Watts and Helen Shelton both of Edmonton and Gwen (Gordon) Fowlie of Winnipeg. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Private Family Services were held at Agape Manor Hospice on Monday, June 30, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. with Chaplain Karen Wilson officiating. TONKIN - Germaine Kathleen (Georgie) (nee Cormier). Born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, June 8, 1915, passed away at Extendicare Cedars Villa, Calgary, Alberta, June 11, 1997. Georgie spent her early years in Medicine Hat, Bellevue and Canmore, Alberta. She was in an accelerated program, and graduated with honors from Canmore High School at a young age. She went on to a nursing career, before marriage and after she was widowed. She was a nurse in the true sense of the word, giving care both professionally and to family and friends for many years. She was always thinking of others, never of herself. Georgie enjoyed poetry, good literature, and music. She was also a great sports fan, both participating and watching. Her favorites were tennis, golf and hockey. Fair play, good sportsmanship, and a sense of humor, were a part of her. She passed all this and much more on to her children. She had a lifelong love of the mountains, and could share many stories about them. She was predeceased by her husband Eddie in 1961, her sister Jeanne Mara, and brother Ernie Cormier. Georgie will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her sons, David Tonkin (Valerie) of Port McNeill, B.C., Chris Tonkin, Bentley, Alberta, Henry Tonkin; and daughter Gerry Anderson (Curtis) of Calgary; her grandchildren, Joe Chaisson (Leona), Sarah Anderson of Calgary, Candie Cote (David), Robyn Tonkin, and David Tonkin (Melissa), all of Port McNeill, B.C.; as well as six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Helene Urwin of Calgary, Yvonne Raitz (Ed), Penticton, B.C., Lorraine Riva (Walter), Parksville, B.C.; and brother Edmond Cormier (Gloria), Penticton, B.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her children would like to thank all the staff at Cedars Villa. We would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Meg Simpson, to Marlie and Olivia, Georgie's nurses at the Primrose nursing station, and to Jean, a palliative care volunteer, for all of your kindness and consideration. TOONE - Mr. Frederic "Alan" Toone, beloved husband of Mrs. Shirley Toone of Calgary, passed away at the Agape Manor Hospice on July 20, 1997 at the age of 78 years. Besides his loving wife, Alan is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Penny Toone of Calgary; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Robert Abbott of Tisdale, Saskatchewan; three grandsons, Ken, John and his wife Joanne Toone, and Wesley Abbott; and a great-granddaughter Ami Stensrud. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, George and Helen of Calgary. He was predeceased by a granddaughter Amber Lynne Stensrud in 1991. WONG - Sau Ying Wong (Karen) (nee Chu), beloved wife of the late Mr. Oak Sang Wong of Calgary, Alberta, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on November 3, 1997 at the age of 47 years. She is the loving mother of Amy, Sandy and Dixon Wong, all of Calgary, Alberta. She is also survived by Tony Chan (Yat-Cheong); her eldest sister Mrs. Tong (Kun-Ying Chu); her brother Frank Chu; her youngest sister Mrs. Kwong (Kit-Ching Chu), and their family members. WOOD - Hazel E. Wood passed away December 3, 1997 at the age of 80 in the High River Nursing Home. Hazel was predeceased by husband Walter in 1973 and longtime companion Jim Fleming. She is survived by daughters, Pat Wylie, Jeanette Merkley, Dorothy McKernon; sister Evelyn; sister-in-law Deborah; thirteen grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at the High River United Church on Saturday, December 13 at 11:00 a.m. (12/10/1997).
TOMPKINS - Dr. Allan David Tompkins passed away in the early hours of October 17, 1997. Born February 11, 1915 at Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, he attended elementary and high school in Kinistino, Sask. and medical school at the University of Western Ontario in London, ON. He interned at St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver B.C. where he met and married his wife Elsie. Allan served in World War II from 1942 to 1946, spending two years overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp as a medical officer. After returning from overseas he spent two years in general practice in Cardston, AB. He moved to Vulcan in September 1948, where he resided ever since, retiring from his medical practice December 31, 1990. He is survived by his wife Elsie of Vulcan; two sons, William and Mel; and two daughters, Val and Jan; one grandchild Aaron David Tompkins of Australia; and one brother Dr. Jarvis Tompkins of Vancouver, BC. Interment will be held at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Calgary. In lieu of flowers, donations in Allan's name may be made to the local Food Bank (10/20/1997).
TORENSMA - Hendrikus (Henry) Torensma, peacefully asleep in the company of God's chosen until Christ's second coming when all God's children will meet in heaven. Henry passed away at the Red Deer Nursing Home on Wednesday, October 1, 1997 at the age of 81 years. He is survived by his loving wife Janny (Jean) Torensma of Calgary; his sister Nellie Boonstra of Holland; his four children, Peter and Sjaan Torensma of Holland, Annet and Kees Den Boer of Penhold, Grace and Art Vandenberg of Cochrane, and Henry and Donna Torensma of Calgary. Henry is also survived by twelve loving grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. DE WAAL - Miss Johanna (Anne) de Waal of Calgary, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Centre on October 6, 1997 at the age of 83 years. A native Calgarian, Miss de Waal had lived here all of her life. She was a long-standing member of the C.W.L. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Miss de Waal managed the De Waal Apartment Building with her brother Ted. She is survived by a brother and two sisters-in-law, Theodore and Eva, and Audrey; nephews and nieces, John, Mari Jo, Ted, Nicole and Marilyn; a great-nephew John Marcel, and a great-niece Allison, all of Calgary. She is also survived by her cousins, Helen Groenen, Betty and Ernie Schultz, Audrey and Helmeth Cornils, Harry and Marylyn Van Ryzewyk and Con Klink; as well as numerous other relatives in Holland. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Theodore de Waal, and a brother John.
