After a short but courageous battle with cancer, Kenneth Bruce Robinson died May 29, 2004 in New Liskeard.
He was born in Mitchell, Ontario, to Reginald B. Robinson and Margaret Robinson on June 27, 1939.
Educated in Mitchell, Stratford Teacher s College and Waterloo Lutheran University, he married his wife Dorthe in Oshawa on September 26, 1959.
Mr. Robinson was a teacher-principal at Bloomingdale (near Kitchener), vice-principal at Hespeler, principal at Pikangikum, Ontario, principal in Gowganda, teacher in Cochrane for two years and at New Liskeard Public School from 1975-1997.
After his retirement he drove a limousine and a school bus.
Mr. Robinson was an avid curler and held executive positions at the Horne Granite Curling Club from 1975 to about 1986. He was also a member and avid bridge player for the Heart of the North Dublicate Bridge Club for many years. He was always eager for a game of bridge or poker whether here or in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he wintered with his wife Dorthe for many years.
He also spent many enjoyable summers in his flourishing vegetable garden.
Mr. Robinson was a devoted grandfather who enjoyed reading, teaching and guiding his seven grandchildren and was always available to go fishing or play cribbage with them.
Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife Dorthe; daughter Sandy Ciraco (Fred); sons Jeff (Cindy) and Jim (Lori); grandchildren Rebeca, Robbie, Daniel, Ryan, Brianna, Brad and Alyssa; mother Margaret Robinson; sister Marjorie Leeuwestein (Harry) and brother Wayne Robinson (Joan).
He was predeceased by his father Reginald Robinson.
A memorial service will be held June 5 at St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church. Visitation is from 1-2 p.m. and the service at 2 p.m.
Reverend Janice Hamalainen will officiate.
Relatives from out of town attending the service will come from Mitchell, Toronto, Brampton and North Bay.
Edgar Wilson Stewart
Edgar Wilson Stewart died peacefully on May 26, 2004 at his home in New Liskeard.
Cremation has taken place and interment will be at the Pioneer cemetery in New Liskeard at a later date.
He was born in New Liskeard on September 27, 1921 to Donald Stewart and Minerva Hansman.
He married Ruth Marie Taylor of New Liskeard on September 8, 1951.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife and their four children: Mary Madison of Kitchener, Jane Stewart of Winnipeg, Don (Lorna) of Kitchener and Bob (Irene) of Bolton; grandchildren Jessica and Ryan Stewart, Chanel and Shaelyn Stewart; sisters Ruth Fleming of Halifax and Jean (Dalton) Wilson of New Liskeard; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters Helen McFarlane, Isabel, Eva Downer-Berry, Betty Ellis and brother Don.
Along with being an avid bridge player, Mr. Stewart enjoyed tennis and the big band sound.
A loving father and husband, he will always be remembered for his quick wit and never-ending support.
His outlook was to enjoy life and to never let the little things get him down. For him, there was a positive side to everything.
You will be missed and never forgotten.
Ronald Hilson
Ron Hilson died unexpectedly after his battle with cancer.
Mr. Hilson is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Theresa, children Larry and Ida and granddaughter Stephanie, who will miss him deeply.
A private cremation has taken place to be followed by a memorial celebration at a later date.
Belva Reid
After a lengthy illness, Belva Reid died on May 20, 2004 at Northview Nursing Home in Englehart.
She was born to Charles and Adeline (Boyce) Peddie on September 3, 1911 and grew up in Harley Township where she attended Number Five Harley School with her six brothers.
Mrs. Reid was predeceased by her infant daughter Margaret in 1944, daughter Amelia in 1950, husband Bud in 1973, and eldest daughter Velma Porter in 1998.
She is survived by her children Edith (Hugh) Porter, Mae (husband Lorne) Burns, Eric (wife Dianne), Don (wife Fran), Orr (wife Lila), Paulene (husband Grant) Olson; her youngest brother Raymond (wife Annie) Peddie; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. and Mr. Reid moved to a farm near Tomstown in 1945 where they spent the rest of their working years, retiring to Englehart in the late sixties.
Mrs. Reid moved into the Senior Citizens apartments about 1974, then to Northview Nursing Home in 1991 where she suffered a stroke and slowly became disabled.
Mrs. Reid s great love was music, and dancing, visiting friends, and to crochet, knit, sew and make quilts.
The funeral service was held at McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart conducted by Morley Shepherdson of New Liskeard.
Mrs. Reid s granddaughter Elaine Mills and great-grandson Robert Lee Porter spoke of treasured memories of their grandmother, and Betty Lafferty played the organ.
Charitable donations were made to the Northview Nursing Home.
Friends and relatives attending the service came from Chelmsford, Sudbury, Matheson, Matachewan, Timmins, Dane, Haileybury, the New Liskeard area, Brethour, Charlton and Tomstown. They enjoyed friendship and lunch at the Legion Hall served by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Joseph Michael Brennan
Joe Brennan of New Liskeard died suddenly at the Temiskaming Hospital on May 15, 2004.
He was born at Brennan s Hill, Quebec, on April 12, 1934 to Andrew and Catherine Brennan.
Educated there, he moved to this area on January 1, 1958 and married his wife Denise in New Liskeard on April 18, 1959.
He worked for the Town of New Liskeard and was very dedicated to his family, friends and Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church of which he was a member for 45 years.
Mr. Brennan served for 30 years on the Fall Fair Board. He had a lifelong love of horses and he actively competed and participated in many fairs. Mr. Brennan was deeply loved and respected by people of all ages who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Mr. Brennan is survived by his wife of 45 years, Denise; children Michael (wife Pina), Rick (wife Lynn), Steve (wife Lorraine); grandchildren Melissa, Courtney, Chelsea, Andrew, Alex, Amy and Madeline; brother Ronald and sister Mamie.
He was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Catherine.
The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel with the service conducted at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church by Father John Lemire.
Pallbearers were Larry Baldovin, Doug McCarthy, Irvin Brennan, Richard Shea, Rick Barron and Robert Beaudoin. Honourary pallbearers were Maurice Landriault, Porky Watters, Hector Beaudoin, Robert Brazeau, Phil Breault, John Landriault and Roger Landriault.
Many friends and family members from Brennan s Hill, Quebec, and Ottawa attended the service.
Vyril Mildred King
After a brief illness, Vyril Mildred King died at Pasqua Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan on May 11, 2004.
She is survived by her son Robert Brian King, grandsons Devyn and Robert King, of Regina; her sister Murl Draper and niece Shirley Nelson of Kenora; her nephews Robert Lefave of Sudbury, Keith Lathem of Richmond Hill, Clayton Coe of Montague, Prince Edward Island; nieces Bonnie Doucette of Digby, Nova Scotia and Teri Stapleton of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Mrs. King was predeceased by her parents Elizabeth and Wesley Coe of North Cobalt; her husband Robert King, formerly of North Cobalt; her sister Bula Lathem of North Cobalt; brothers Earl Lefave of Thunder Bay and Clayton Coe of Weymouth, Nova Scotia.
Mrs. King was born November 9, 1929 in North Cobalt. She attended school in North Cobalt and New Liskeard. She worked for some time as a medical librarian at the Misericordia Hospital in Haileybury, and then for the law firm of Dean and Gordon.
Mrs. King and her family moved to the Richmond Hill- Newmarket area in 1971, and for many years she worked for the law firm of James Otton.
In later years, she moved to Regina to be near her son and her beloved grandsons.
Mrs. King will always be remembered by her family and friends as a woman with a very strong will and a very big heart.
Her burial arrangements were handled by the Lee Funeral Home in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Warren George Morrow
After a courageous battle with cancer, Warren George Morrow passed away at the Temiskaming Hospital on April 29, 2004.
He was born on June 7, 1930 in Kirkland Lake to Sinklor and Phoebe Morrow. He attended Hudson Consolidated School. Later he worked at Hill-Clark-Francis, Rexwood, Wabi Iron Works, and was a dairy and beef farmer.
On August 24, 1954 he married Verla Jibb at Milberta United Church.
A resident of Hudson Township for several years, Mr. Morrow pursued many interests during his life. He was a school bus driver and a councillor for 25 years. He and Howard Foley made a school bus similar to the one they rode to school in. He enjoyed farming, and had a great love of horses. He was a member of Milberta United Church.
He was predeceased by his parents and his stepfather Orra Morrow.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Verla Morrow; sisters Verda Peckover, Eleanor Willard, Heather (Marcel) Gervais of New Liskeard, Gloria Palmer of High River, Alberta, and Donna Burnett of North Cobalt; brothers Murray (Gertrude) of New Liskeard and Claire (Norma) of Cranbrook, British Columbia; also many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held on May 3 at the Perrin Funeral Chapel. Reverend Kitty Miller officiated. Reverend Wally Wood gave the eulogy, Pat Inglis read part of the scripture, and the organist was Doriel Poupore.
Burial was at the New Liskeard Valleyview cemetery.
Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Kitchener, Oshawa, Newmarket, Greenwood, Elmvale, Sudbury, North Bay, North Cobalt and Kirkland Lake.
Memorial donations were made to the Canadian Cancer Society and Milberta United Church.
