In the firm assurance that God is his refuge, and anticipating God’s promise of his salvation, Meindert Kalverda went home to be with his Lord on Monday, April 19, 2004 at Holland Christian Homes, Brampton, in his 91st year. Born in Ferwerd, The Netherlands, and formerly of Strathroy and also New Liskeard.
Predeceased by wife Maaike (née Brandsma — 1963).
Dear father of Jane (Dick) Holman of Mt. Brydges, Meindert (Cora) Kalverda of Brampton, Tjisse (Theresa) Kalverda of Barrie, Dirk (Grace) Kalverda of Brampton, John (Cathy) Kalverda of Brampton, Elsie (John) Spencer of Milverton, Fred (Sonya) Kalverda of Brampton and Marlene Kalverda (Arvid Stenslands) of Edmonton.
Survived by 2 brothers in Holland. Remembered by 33 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Friends were received by the family at the Elliott-Madill Komoka Chapel, 22568 Komoka Road, on Thursday, April 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral service followed on Friday, April 23 from the Mt. Brydges Christian Reformed Church at 11 a.m. with Rev. Vic VanderMolen officiating. Interment Mt. Brydges cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Strathroy Community Christian School would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
Olive Laura McIntyre
Olive Laura McIntyre of Extendicare Nursing Home died in Haileybury on April 22, 2004.
She was born to Reginald Smith and Elizabeth Carswell in Cache Bay on September 17, 1919. Educated in Sturgeon Falls, she married Sandy McIntyre in Cache Bay on April 5, 1940.
Mrs. McIntyre was predeceased by her husband Sandy, nephew Reg McIntyre and niece Betty Johnson.
She is survived by her children Joy David (Gary) of Oshawa, Tim McIntyre (Susan) of Port Dover and Donelda Leduc (Ed) of Haileybury; granddaughters Stephanie, Melissa, Erin and Amy; great-nephews Dean, Terry and Dale and great-niece Lori.
The funeral was arranged by Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home in Haileybury where the service was conducted April 24. United Church Minister Wally Wood officiated.
Pallbearers were Tim and Bill McIntyre, Dean Johnson, Ed Leduc and Brian Peplinski.
Burial is at the Union cemetery in Sturgeon Falls.
Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Oshawa, Port Dover, Cache Bay, North Bay, Cobalt, Lakefield and Sudbury.
In memory contributions were made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Ernest John Dambrowitz
It is with sadness but also with deep gratitude for his life, that the Dambrowitz family announces the death of their loving patriarch, Ernest John. He died surrounded by family on Monday, April 19, 2004 at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Matheson. Ernie was in his 92nd year. He is survived by his cherished wife and partner in life’s endeavours Jessie (Graham). Through the almost 67 years of their marriage, they shared their love and commitment to one another and their family. He will be deeply missed by his ten children Ottily (Jim Andrews), Sylvia (Mike Milinkovich), John (Louise), Ivan (Cecilia), Fred, Georgina (Doug Richardson), George (Helen), Ted (Gisele), Lillian (Gord Roberts), and Catherine (Colin McChristie), the 30 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren.
A resident of Matheson for over 85 years, Ernie pursued many interests during his life. He was one of the founding partners of Hembruff and Dambrowitz Construction Ltd. which built extensively throughout Northern Ontario. His other passion was his farm and the fine herd of polled purebred Herefords he established. He contributed in many ways to the agricultural industry of the North.
The family feels blessed to have shared so many years with a man who lived life so fully and who was the rock and foundation of his family.
A celebration of his life was held Thursday, April 22nd at 2 p.m. at St. Andrews United Church, Matheson, Ontario. There were visitations at the church on Wednesday, April 21st 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to Dr. Stephen Chiang and the nursing staff for their wonderful, attentive care during Ernie’s stay in hospital. Memorial Donations can be made in his memory to Bingham Memorial Hospital.
Jean-Paul Montigny
Jean-Paul Montigny died April 9, 2004 at the age of 70.
Mr. Montigny is survived by his loving wife Aline, children Gilles, Rose, Daniel, Linda, Sylvie and Nancy and 15 grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him, he will be forever in their hearts.
The family expressed their deepest gratitude to the Temiskaming Hospital and their staff. Special thanks to Perrin Funeral Chapel, Father Lafond and the volunteers of Notre Dame de Bon Secours.

Arcade P. Ethier
Earlton resident Arcade P. Ethier died suddenly at the Englehart and District Hospital on April 7, 2004.
He was born in Laverlochère, Quebec on November 14, 1932 to Cécile Manthas and Paul Ethier.
Educated in Laverlochère, he married Dora Léveillé in Earlton in 1954, having moved there in 1948.
Mr. Ethier was the store manager at the Earlton Co-Op (U.C.O.). He was known as a fine man who was involved with the organization of the Bingo, le Club de l’Age d’Or and Chevalier de Colombs. He was a member of Saint Jean Baptiste Church and he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting.
He will be missed by his wife, family and lots of friends. It will be a huge hole in the community, said his family. Mr. Ethier and his friends shared a special table at the restaurant for coffee time.
Mr. Ethier is survived by his wife Dora, son Richard (Ilka) Ethier of Hanmer, daughters Line (Raymond) Champion of Aurora and Denise (Blair) Phillips of Kerns Township; six grandchildren, brother Adonias and sisters Marie-Anne Clément and Yvonne Savoie.
He was predeceased by his parents Cécile and Paul Ethier, brothers Jean-Baptiste and Father Zenon.
The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted at St.Jean Baptiste Church in Earlton on April 10 by Père Gilles Leblanc.
Pallbearers were Germain Léveillé, Claude Caron, Michel Caron, Richard Léveillé, Sylvio Léveillé and René Jubinville.
Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Windsor, Montreal, Earlton, Gatineau, Ottawa, London, Sudbury, Field, Kirkland Lake, Larder Lake, New Liskeard and Toronto.
In memory contributions were made to the C.T. Scanner Foundation at the Temiskaming Hospital.
The family thanked everybody for their thoughts and encouragement throughout their hard times.
Elsie Bowman
Elsie Emily Bowman (née Heard) died peacefully on April 6, 2004 at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. She was in her eighty-ninth year.
Mrs. Bowman was predeceased by her husbands Frank Miller, Gary McMullen and John Bowman, sisters Gladys Hadden and Edith McFarlane and brothers Hazlet Heard, Leonard Heard and Robert Heard.
She is survived by her children Larry Miller (daughter-in-law Betty Miller) of Saskatoon, Susan Hampton (son-in-law Ted Hampton) of Toronto; grandchildren Rebecca Hay (husband Robert), Lianne Miller and Robert Miller, and great-grandchildren Mackenzie and Caeden Hay, brother Edwin Heard, sister Violet Michiel and brother-in-law Max Michiel, sister-in-law Marion Ansley, many nieces and nephews, and stepson Donald Bowman.
Mrs. Bowman was born in Bucke Township to Rob Roy and Maria Heard and was a survivor of the Haileybury Fire of 1922. She attended Clover Valley Public School and Haileybury High School were she demonstrated her scholastic abilities. She later trained as a registered nurse at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie where she was awarded a gold medal of distinction. Before moving further south she lived in Haileybury, Chaput Hughes and North Bay. She also owned a cottage on Lake Temagami.
The funeral service was conducted by Major Rowena Wiseman of the Salvation Army on April 8 at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home in Toronto.
Interment will take place at the Kirkland Lake cemetery on May 28, 2004 at 10:30 a.m.
Violet Clements (née Champagne)
Violet Clements died suddenly at the Spruce Hill Lodge in South Porcupine on April 13, 2004.
She was predeceased by her parents Paul and Lina (Cameron) Champagne, husband Charles, son Paul and brothers Raymond and Gorden.
Mrs. Clements is survived by her brother Eldon of Elliot Lake, daughters Marie Fiset (Guy) of Elk Lake and Jean Mackey (Ken) of Timmins, grandchildren Sherry Fisher (Dave) of Brampton, Shawn Fiset of Elk Lake, Dean Mackey (Lisa) and Jodee Mackey of Timmins, and great-grandchildren Amy Fisher and Taylor and Evan Mackey.
Mrs. Clements treasured her family and friends and had a special place in her heart for her beloved community of Elk Lake.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place with a private burial to be held at a later date.
Donations in memory of Mrs. Clements to the Elk Lake Museum would be appreciated by the family.
John Thomas (Jack) Cobb
John Thomas Cobb died peacefully at the Temiskaming Hospital on Thursday, April 15, 2004 in his ninety-first year.
He was born in Fort Colounge, Quebec on May 5, 1912.
He was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Ida Cobb, wife Gertrude, brothers Norman, Russell, George and Alexander, sisters Mary and Hermione, son Melvin and daughter Laura.
He is survived by his daughter Stephanie (Andrew), daughter-in-law Claire, son-in-law Michael, grandchildren Cherie, Corey and David and great-grandchildren Melina, Trent and Taylor. Also by many special nephews and nieces and friends.
Mr. Cobb was a pioneer in the early days of Temiskaming, working as a mate on many small logging boats and later becoming Captain of the tug P.J. Murer on Lake Temiskaming. He also worked for Dofasco at the Sherman Mine in Temagami and later, at Haileybury Public School for the Temiskaming Board of Education.
He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Silver Lodge Chapter. He was also a founding member of the Haileybury Heritage Museum and spent many happy volunteer hours there, with his crowning achievement being the piloting of the tugboat, M.V. Beauchene on it’s last voyage to Haileybury, where it is on display.
He was awarded an Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Culture volunteer award in 2003 for his dedication and efforts on behalf of the Museum. He was also an animal lover and was seldom seen without his beloved pet dog Beau.
The funeral was arranged by Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home in Haileybury with the service held at St. Andrew’s United Church in Haileybury on April 19 with Reverend Kitty Miller officiating.
Memorial contributions to the Haileybury Heritage Museum building fund would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Pierre David Lantaigne
After a short battle with cancer, Pierre David Lantaigne of New Liskeard died April 1, 2004 at the Temiskaming Hospital.
Mr. Lantaigne was born in Belle Vallée on May 8, 1947 to Thérèse Labonté and Gabriel Lantaigne.
Mr. Lantaigne was the founder and a coordinator and worker at Northern Star Consumer/Survivor and Family Network. He had many talents, enjoyed people and travelling. He devoted the last years of his life to helping people with a mental disorder. He was loved and will be missed by many people.
Mr. Lantaigne is survived by his daughters Carole (Bill) and Claire (Rick); sister Thérèse Johnson; stepsisters Mariette Tourigny (Ludger), Claudette Tourigny and stepbrother Roger Lauzon.
He was predeceased by his parents Thérèse and Gabriel and brother Aimé Lantaigne.
The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted at Paroisse Sacré Coeur by Father Turcotte.
Pallbearer was nephew Eddie Johnson.
Cremation has taken place with interment at the Belle Vallée cemetery in the summer.
The funeral was followed by a lunch in the church basement as well as at the Northern Star Consumer/Survivor and Family Network. It was a memorial gathering for the members and public.
Donations were made to the Cancer Society and to the Northern Star Consumer/Survivor and Family Network at the church.
The family thanked Dr. Hurtubise, Dr. Corbin, the staff and especially the nurses in palliative care in Mr. Lantaigne’s final moments.
