Elizabeth Lilian (Betty) Hie

Brethour Township lost one of its former residents on April 21, 2004 when Elizabeth Hie Passed peacefully away at her home at 105 May Street in New Liskeard. She was fighting cancer for three years.

Elizabeth was born to the late Leonard and Ellen Lankey in a log cabin on third concession of Brethour on the second day of September, 1926. She lived most of her life in Brethour Township, until she moved to town in May 2003.

In 1947 she married Gordon Broderick with whom she had two children and two step-children. Gordon passed away in 1969.

In 1972 she married Harold Hie, who worked for the Town of New Liskeard. They had a greenhouse, market gardening and found time to do volunteer work for the Legion Find Our Children Program, taught square dance classes and were always willing to help wherever needed. Betty made homemade bread in an outdoor oven at Earlton Steam Show and made butter for 25 years. She also made bread at Hunta Gone Bye Days for five years.

In 1985 she was awarded the Air Canada Gold Heart from the newspaper association. In 2000 she received the International Senior Citizens award. In 2003 along with her husband she received the Citizens award of the year from the town of New Liskeard.

She always had a pleasant smile and was willing to help everyone and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband Harold, son Louis (Audrey), daughters Holly (Keith), 2 step-children, Lois (Ivor) who lives in Kenora, Douglas (Susan) Hie in London. William Broderick passed away several years ago, a brother Joseph (Edith) Lankey in Harley Township. A sister Ruby (Floyd) Millen in Kenabeek, a brother Jack passed away three years ago. She has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

The Funeral Service was from Perrin Funeral Chapel with Reverend Thompson from Haileybury Pentecostal Church. She was baptized in Pentecostal Faith at The Birches at Round Lake.

The Honourary Pallbearers were Hartley Houston, Roland Lachapelle and Alfred O Reilly. The pallbearers were Jack Crossman, Roy Sutton, Allan Goddard, Chris Oslund, Andy and Donald Poupore, all long-time friends.

Burial will take place in Brethour cemetery.

Doris May Doupe

Doris May Doupe died April 27, 2004 at the Temiskaming Hospital.

She was born in South River on March 30, 1916 to Albert Henry Holbrook and Emmaline Perro Holbrook.

Educated in North Bay, she married Overton (Pat) Doupe in North Bay on March 3, 1943.

Mrs. Doupe was a homemaker who loved knitting, baking, cooking and taking in bingos.

She was predeceased by her husband Overton (Pat) on February 1, 1980 at their Harley Township home; her daughter Ida Carson in 2002; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Doupe is survived by her daughters Margaret Gaboury (Armand), Leona Kelly (John), Edna Kelly, Arvilla Roy (Timothy), Berthanna Doupe (Arthur), Joanne Landry (Romeo) and Rose Doupe; sons Ken Sonny Doupe (Patsy), Henry Doupe (Margaret), Arnold Doupe (Theresa), Alfred Doupe (Robbin) and Oscar Doupe; 41 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted by Reverend Keith Edwards.

Pallbearers were Michael Gaboury, Patrick Doupe, Glen Doupe, Ken Doupe Jr., Alton Doupe and Scott Doupe.

Burial is at the Harley Township cemetery.

Luncheon followed the service at the Harley Hall.

Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Orillia, Kirkland Lake, Alberta, Timmins, Quebec and the Tri-Town area.

The family of Mrs. Doupe thanked those who sent flowers, cards, donations and lunch.

They also thanked Keith Edwards for the wonderful sermon and thanked Helen Connelly, Cathy Connelly and Darlene Williams who put out the lunch at the Harley Hall.

Isobel (Belle) Janet Simmons

Isobel Simmons of Englehart died March 6, 2004 at the Englehart and District Hospital.

She was born in Englehart on May 19, 1953 to Jack and Isobel Katherine Fearnley.

Educated at Englehart Public and High Schools, she loved animals and gardening. The one love of her life was being a volunteer animal handler at the Calgary Zoo for many years. She moved back to Englehart from Calgary in 1993 and spent many years as a companion to her mother. She was also a member of St. Paul s Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Simmons, who was divorced, is survived by her daughter Gidget (Gerry) Hebert and grandson Bradley Hebert of Cold Lake, Alberta; mother Isobel Fearnley; siblings Mary (Cam) Demarce, John (Shirley) Fearnley, Mark (Penny) Fearnley; and six nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father Jack Fearnley.

The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart. Cremation has occurred.

In memory contributions to the Englehart and District Hospital would be appreciated by the family.

The family of the late Isobel Simmons will receive friends at the McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart on Friday, May 14 from 7-9 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at McDonald Funeral Home on Saturday, May 15 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Drew Jacques officiating.

Pastor Chester Hutchings Edwards

Pastor Chester Edwards of Port Rowan, formerly of Thornloe, died peacefully surrounded by his family on May 2, 2004 at the Norfolk General Hospital in Simcoe. He was in his eighty-ninth year.

He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret (Veitch) whom he married June 17, 1942; children David (wife Beth) of Ottawa, Joyce (husband Ed Doerksen) of Port Rowan, Ronald (wife Catherine) of Caledonia), Ruth (husband Dave Reimer) and Kathleen (husband Phil Baese), all of Port Rowan, Gordon (wife Jan) of Haileybury and Reverend Keith (wife Ruth) of Thornloe; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother Forde (wife Agnes) and sister Grace Johnston, all of New Liskeard.

A private family interment will take place at the New Liskeard cemetery on Saturday, May 8 followed by a memorial service at the Haileybury Pentecostal Church in Haileybury at noon hour. Pastor Keith Edwards will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Gideon Bibles or to a special project at the Thornloe Crossroads Baptist Church would be gratefully appreciated by the family.

The family quotes Psalm 116:16 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.

Rolland Desjardins

In loving memory of Rolland (Rolly) Desjardins who passed away at the Temiskaming Hospital on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the age of 79.

We will remember Rolly as the person who brought us laughter and he leaves us all with an abundance of fond memories.

He was predeceased by his first wife C cile (L veill ), his parents Wilfrid and Antoinette (Duhamel) Desjardins, one sister Marie-Claire and two brothers L o and Jean-Paul.

He is survived by his wife B atrice (Maill ), her children and grandchildren. Dear father of Fern (Sue McInall) of London; Fernande (Claude Dupuis) of Aylmer, Qu bec; Dick (friend Marilyn Reynolds) of Edmonton; Claude (friend Martha Haggett) of Ottawa and Paulette (Glenn Tunnock) of North Bay. Cherished grandfather to Keri and Cyndy Desjardins, St phane Dupuis (Jos e Major), Tanya Dupuis (Billy Mousseau), Jocelyne Desjardins (friend Reese), Jason (Rosanna) Desjardins, Clayton Desjardins, Shane Tunnock (friend Janice) and Allison Tunnock. Great grandfather to Alexina and Kalyah Mousseau. Rolly will be sadly missed by his seven sisters C cile, Agathe, Anne-Marie, Rita, Marguerite, Cl mence and Th r se and his five brothers Marcel, Julien, Andr , Jean-Guy and Raymond.

The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Home in New Liskeard and the service was conducted by Father Lafond on Saturday, April 10 at the Sacred Heart Parish. Cremation has taken place and internment will be held at a later date in New Liskeard.

The family has chosen the Canadian Cancer Society for donations.

Pallbearers were his three sons Fern, Dick and Claude and his three grandsons St phane Dupuis, Shane Tunnock and Clayton Desjardins.

Special thanks to Dr. Corbin, Dr. Rhan and the very special nurses (Sharon, Sue, Simone, Solange, etc...) You were gentle, kind, warm and soft spoken in his final weeks. His five children will remember the special moments with all of you thank you.

Richard Fleury

Haileybury resident Richard Fleury died at his home on February 4, 2004.

He was born in North Cobalt on March 20, 1924 to Joseph Fleury and Justine Guilbeault.

Educated in North Cobalt, he went on to serve in World War II.

Mr. Fleury loved music and dancing and playing cards.

Mr. Fleury was predeceased by his wife, his parents, brothers Alfred, Hector, Armand, Noel and Peter and by his sisters Albertine Perron and Julie Babin.

He is survived by his sons Terrence and Richard, both of Nepean; sisters Florence Sauv , Claire Langlois and Diane Morin; special friend Antoinette Miron; and nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral was arranged by Buffam L veill Funeral Home in Haileybury with the service conducted by Father Firmin Lafond at Holy Cross Church on February 6.

Pallbearers were Terry, Dick and Roland Fleury, Daniel Miron, Maurice and Suzanne Boucher.

Burial is at the Veterans cemetery in Haileybury.

Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Nepean, Haileybury, North Cobalt, Cobalt, New Liskeard, Fauquier, Laval, Quebec, Latchford and Englehart.

In memory contributions were made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
