Born in Willesden, England, August 18, 1901. Came to Canada at an early age, ived in Exshaw, Alberta, then moved to Calgary. Helena married Fred Woolley in 1925 and moved to Cranbrook, B.C. and lived there until 1942; moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, then Field, B.C., Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and back to Calgary, Alberta. She was predeceased by parents, Henry and Alice Cheney, husband Fred, sisters, Gladys and Florence, brothers, Bob, Jack and Hugh. Sadly remembered and lovingly missed by daughters, Margaret (Don) Hill of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Norma Jean (Ron) Trammell of Charlo, Montana; and son Robert of Vancouver, B.C.; thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law Mrs. Evelyn Woolley and brother-in-law Mr. John Houston, both of Calgary, Alberta. Helena was a past Noble Grand with Cranbrook Rebekah Lodge and member of Anoka Rebekah Lodge, Calgary, also a longtime former member of the W.A. of All Saints Anglican Church in Calgary. ZALASKI -- Mrs. Anne Zalaski of White Rock, B.C., formerly of Calgary, Alberta, passed away at Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock, on January 5, 1998 at the age of 85 years. Beloved mother and mother-in-law of Mary and Elmer Berry, Surrey, B.C., Lillianand Mervin Parker, Victoria, B.C., and Peter Muir, Calgary, Alberta. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Gulayec, Delta, B.C. and Paul Gulayec, St. Paul, Alberta; and by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband John Zalaski in 1992 and a daughter Elsie Muir in 1985, three brothers, Bill, Dan, and Nick Gulayec, and sister Nettie Towpick. Anne resided in White Rock, B.C. since October 1, 1996. She was an active member of St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Golden Age Club. BANKS -- Dorothy May (nee Harding), passed away on Sunday, December 28, 1997 at the age of 98 years. She was born August 22, 1899 in Shropshire, England. Dorothy's family homesteaded in the Olds area when she was fourteen. She taught school from the ne room school house and later the normal practice to substitute teaching in more modern schools in Calgary until her retirement. With an indomitable adventuresome spirit, she became involved in the United Church Missionary Society, the Calgary General Hospital Auxiliary, the Calgary Zoo, the Glenbow Museum, the Alberta Aberdeen Angus Association and was inducted into the Olds College Hall of Fame in 1993. Dorothy loved music, so having accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour, she is now relishing the heavenly music. She will also be remembered for her insatiable desire to learn, her positive attitude and sense of humor. Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Sandi Landymore and Susan Banks. "Muggy", as she was affectionately dubbed by her grandchildren, Jim Landymore (with two great-grandchildren, Corbin and Rochele), Ken Landymore (with great-granddaughter Baylee), Steven Landymore and Sharilyn Landymore, will also be joyfully remembered by each one. Dorothy has two living brothers, Hugh Harding of Victoria, and Kenneth Harding of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, as well as many wonderful nephews, nieces and their children. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Rowland and Nellie Harding, two sisters, Joyce as a baby, and Elsie in 1984, as well as her husband Dr. Bligh Banks in 1988. BENKO -- Mrs. Agnes Marie Benko of Calgary, passed away suddenly at her residence on Monday, December 29, 1997 at the age of 79 years. Agnes was born September 25, 1918 in Raymore, Saskatchewan. Agnes is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Joan Benko of Calgary; two grandsons, Richard, Christopher and his wife Tanya, all of Calgary. She is also survived by two brothers and four sisters-in-law, Edward and Rita Lang of Saskatoon, SK, Fern and Frances Lang of Calgary, Anna Lang of Calgary, and Anne Lang of Regina; and two sisters and four brothers-in-law, Zita and Gabe Lang of Regina, Ella and Steve Kitella of Calgary, Joe Petro of Hamilton, Ontario, and Pat Hanlon of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. BIRTLEY -- William (Bill) Birtley of Calgary, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 27, 1997 in his 96th year. Bill was born February 1, 1902 in the district of Lancaster, County of Durham, England and emigrated to Canada with his famiy in 1904. He resided in Toronto until 1989 at which time he relocated to Calgary. His memory will be cherished by his family and friends and we will miss his sense of humour, his wisdom and determination. CAMPBELL -- Evelyn Frances (nee Hicklin), 75, passed away peacefully December 28, 1997 at the Calgary Foothills Hospital. She is survived by one sister Doreen (Tom) Watson of Hilda; two daughters, Violet (Ed) Martyniuk, Calgary, and Verna (Roland) Strlund of Minneapolis; as well as eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and her special friend Clare Schweitzer. COWARD -- William passed away peacefully on December 30, 1997 at the Colonel Belcher Hospital at 86 years. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife of fifty-three years, Elsie; his children, Robert (Fran), Ruth Bahnuik, Tom (Chrissie); and his seen grandchildren, Allison, Pamela, Jonathan, Angela, Andrew, Sandra and Laura. Bill taught school in many small towns in rural Alberta and will be remembered by his students for his enthusiasm for lifelong learning. DeLEEUW -- Albert DeLeeuw passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on December 21, 1997 at the age of 73 years. He is survived by his daughter Cheryl DeLeeuw; two grandchildren, Joseph and Jamie DeLeeuw of Calgary; brothers, Art (Elenor) of Drumheller, ay (Violet) of Chase, B.C., Frank and Marcel (Alice) of Vernon, B.C., Fred of Enderby, B.C.; a sister Odel (Leroy) Ogi; sister-in-law Alvina DeLeeuw of Vernon, B.C.; and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his dearest friend and companion Margaret Kampel. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother John. Albert was born in Kamloops, B.C. on January 26, 1924. He joined the P.P.C.L.I. in 1943, spending much of his military career overseas. After his discharge, he became a constable with the CPR Police in Calgary, retiring in 1984. Albert enjoyed the outdoors, trapping, fishing and hunting. He was a member in good standing of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years. He was an avid square dancer for fifteen years with the Swinging Singles and Single Eights clubs and will be remembered for his willingness to help the beginner dancers as a "square angel", and as having travelled to many camp-outs and conventions all over Alberta, B.C., Alaska and the U.S. in his "big yellow school bus". DUNBAR -- Mrs. Helen Cecilia Dunbar, beloved wife or Mr. Rennie Dunbar of Calgary, passed away at her residence on December 30, 1997, after a short illness. Helen was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta on October 28, 1917 and married in Edmonton in 1951. Sh has resided in Calgary since 1961. Her life was dedicated to her family. Helen will be remembered for her love of life, honesty and the wisdom that she shared. Besides her loving husband Rennie, Helen is also survived by her three sons, two daughters-in-law and a daughter, Douglas and Betty Jean of Edmonton, Wayne and Carolyn of Calgary, Murray Dunbar of Calgary, Beth Ranger and husband Danny; as well as six granddaughters. EVANS -- Gerald Roy (Gerry) Evans, beloved husband, father and friend, passed away at home on Tuesday, December 30, 1997, at the age of 72 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Laura and Leonard Evans, first wife Betty Beaumont, second wife Dona elle Evans (nee Dwigans) in 1971, and son Rexford John Evans in 1968. Gerry is survived by his wife Claire Evans; brother Walter Evans (Vivian) of Victoria, BC; daughters, Sharon Evans of Toronto, Peggy Henderson of Etobicoke, ON, Gillian Evans (Paul Fry) of Calgary, and Heather Johnson (Derrick) of Port Moody, BC; stepdaughters, Kerry White-Tucker (Ron Tucker) of Calgary, and Jennifer White of Vancouver; stepson Greg White (Karen Mackie) of Calgary; grandchildren, Blair and Jason Henderson of Etobicoke, ON, Jessica and Hannah Johnson of Port Moody, BC; and stepgrandchildren, Rebecca and Samuel Tucker of Calgary. Born in Saskatoon in 1925, Gerry completed Senior Matriculation at Bedford Road Collegiate in June, 1943. He immediately joined the Royal Canadian Navy, where he served until 1945. He became a journeyman electrician in 1947, running his own electrical and outboard marine business until 1952 when he went to Juno, Alaska to work in the C.M.S. Mine. Gerry returned to Saskatoon to form an electrical contracting firm which was responsible for the electrical portion of all the major gas installations in the city of Saskatoon. In 1958, Gerry received his registered hunting and fishing guide's license, which began his life-long love affair with the North Country, particularly LaRonge, Saskatchewan. Gerry moved to Calgary in 1959, where he became a representative for the Electrical Services League of Alberta, while working as a journeyman electrician. He later worked for Federal Pacific Electric Equipment Manufacturers, until 1966, when he transferred to Pyle National Electrical Manufacturing, where he remained while completing the Academic Business Diploma Program at Mount Royal College, where he was awarded the Birks Medal for highest grade point average for 1968-1969. In order to raise two young daughters and care for his terminally ill wife, Dona, Gerry entered and completed in 1973, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. He taught at James Short Memorial Elementary School until 1976, when he began teaching in the Math and Physics Department at S.A.I.T. for the next ten years. Gerry completed his Master of Arts in Applied Behavioral Science from L.I.O.S. in 1986, and given his keen interest in step-families, was instrumental in starting S.O.S. (Society of Step-families). In 1997 he earned his Doctoral Degree in Philosophy and Health and Human Sciences from Columbia Pacific University, San Francisco, CA. Gerry died as he had lived, surrounded by the love, admiration and respect of his family and friends. He will be cremated, and in the spring, Gerry's ashes will be returned to the North Country, which he loved so deeply. A Memorial Service will be held at Parkdale United Church, 2919 - 8 Avenue N.W., on Saturday, January 3, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Jan Craig officiating.
