Whiticar, Clarence "Whit"ť Tuesday, 20 Nov 2007
Parksville, BC
Whiticar, Clarence “Whit” passed away peacefully on November 20 at 87 years of age. Born in Perth, Ontario, Whit made his mark early in school in public speaking and sprinting, attributes that would serve him well later in life. On enlisting in the Canadian Army just days after WWII commenced, Whit when asked “Infantry or Transport”, chose trucks over walking and started a long, decorated military career with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, serving in England and Europe during the war. Returning to Canada, Whit married Yvonne Abernethy, a Scottish lass and started a family. Whit was the first Canadian serviceman in the Korean conflict, arriving with an advance American battalion. Whit then fulfilled Canada’s peacekeeping responsibilities in Gaza in 1960, where conflict still flares today. He retired from the Armed Forces as Major in 1964 and joined the public service of Canada, including time at Treasury Board and finally as Director General Personnel at the Ministry of Transport. After 36 years service, in 1975 Whit retired to another career as the Director of Personnel at Asian Development Bank in Manila, the Philippines, where he enjoyed 6 happy years with Yvonne and endless visitors. Whit and Yvonne retired to Qualicum Beach, British Colombia 1981, in their dream home on the beach, where flower and vegetable gardens flourished. Yvonne passed in 1998 but Whit was close to his family who supported him in his later years. A dear, long time family friend, Isobel Low, visited Whit many times from Scotland, bringing him loving companionship and joy of life, for which the family is so grateful. Whit is survived by three sons and a daughter and nine grandchildren. A celebration of Whit’s life and spreading of his ashes will take place next spring. The family would like to thank the staff at Shannon Oaks where Whit spent his last few years, and the staff of Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital, who provided such loving, compassionate care of Whit over his final days. Flowers respectfully declined, but donations to Mount St. Joseph’s or to the charity of your choice would be welcome.
