SHAW, Peter Norman Tuesday, 25 Sep 2007
Parksville, BC
1950-2007
On the morning of September 25, Peter Norman Shaw passed away peacefully in his sleep in the Palliative Care Unit of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Despite cancer, Peter died with dignity and grace, as he had wished.
Peter was pre-deceased by his parents Lillian and Jack Shaw and is survived by siblings Susanne, Ruth Tripodi (Bob), John (Cedalia) and Andrew; nephews John Defalque, Chris Defalque and David Shaw; and nieces Rachel and Sara Shaw. He is also survived by Aunt Annette Romanek and Uncle Peter Plante, numerous cousins and legends of wonderful and supportive friends. All will deeply miss his lively wit and caring spirit.
Peter was born February 26, 1950 in Lockport, NY, USA, but other than a half-dozen years in Seattle, he lived most of his life in Canada, settling in Parksville for the last seventeen years. He loved his town and fought hard for the preservation of its shoreline and wildlife. Peter was an avid gardener, enhancing every place in which he lived. Being invited to one of his garden candlelight dinners was a real treat! Peter was also an ardent recycler, making sure nothing went to waste. He loved playing the piano and composing music. Classical music, writing and research were his hobbies, but trains were his passion and he knew just about everything about every train ever built. When he was a child, he stood on his grandparents’ couch for hours, just watching the long trains pass by. He had followed many career paths, from logging and mining to restaurant management and shipping agent and had travelled extensively.
Prayers will be held Thursday, October 4th from 6-7 PM at St. Peter’s Church, 301 Machleary Street in Nanaimo. The funeral service will take place Friday, October 5th at 12:30 PM at St. Peter’s, with a reception to follow.

McHAFFIE, John James Friday, 21 Sep 2007
Parksville, BC
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John James McHaffie on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007 in Qualicum Beach.
John is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Betty, daughters Wendy, Jenny, Susan (Doug), and Julie (Steve). Grandchildren Lily, Mac and Sadie will miss their Pop Pop. Predeceased by brother Colin and sister Barbara.
John was born in 1929 in Aberlour, Scotland. After completing his schooling at Gordonstoun Private School he went on to a career in the British Military Police where he served in India and Africa. Immigration in 1952 to Canada found dad working in freezing Northern Saskatchewan for the Hudsons Bay Company. Moving further West he met Betty and they married in 1955 and settled in West Vancouver to raise four daughters. Dad’s life was full. A long successful career with Sun Life Assurance Company, world travel, fishing and train collecting kept him busy along with his beautiful garden and the Vancouver Canucks.
Retiring in 1993 Betty and John moved to Qualicum Beach. Dad became active chairing the Chartwell Garden Committee and faithfully attending The Flat Earth Society Coffee Club. The last months of Dad’s life were spent at The Gardens Care Facility where he enjoyed the Antique Roadshow, Old Time Fiddlers and barbeques. All the staff did an exceptional job filling his days with fun. Dad was treated with kindness and courtesy especially by nurse Amanda who was with him at the end.
A party to celebrate his life will be held at a later date, on the North Shore.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Diabetes or Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully appreciated.

March 24th, 1921 - December 16th, 2007
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce Allen on Sunday, December 16, 2007. Predeceased by her husband, Reginald Allen in 1998, she is survived by her daughter, Judy, son, Craig (Meryliss), “son-in-law” John Lunam, and grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, Ryan and Lauren. Born in London, England she immigrated to Sarnia, Ontario at 4 months old, yet managed to retain her British accent all her life. Growing up in Toronto, she attended the Normal Model School and, following her graduation, worked for Bell Canada. She returned to London to assist with the war effort as a volunteer with the Red Cross, where she met her future husband, Reginald Allen, amidst a giant mess of potato peels. They were married in Toronto on June 8, 1946.
She continued to work for “Ma Bell” until 1962 when she attended Toronto Teacher’s College. She fulfilled a life-long dream when she became a special education teacher in Thornhill, Ontario. The Allens migrated west to Port Moody in 1974 and settled in for retirement in Parksville in 1983.
Joyce devoted herself to the people around her. She has many wonderful friends in Parksville and around the world. Through her contributions to the Parksville community she touched the lives of many people. She was active with the Eaglecrest Golf Club, Ladies Auxiliary to Arrowsmith Lodge and Old Age Pensioner’s Association, amongst others. Joyce will be fondly remembered for her “poetry for all occasions”. She will be profoundly missed by her loving family and many friends, both near and far.
A service of remembrance will be held Friday, January 4, 2008, 1:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Parksville. All are welcome.
