WALSH, JEAN Tuesday, 01 Apr 2008
Kelowna, BC
A KELOWNA ORIGINAL
Jean McKenzie Walsh (nee Black) has passed away peacefully at the Village on Mill Creek at the age of 86. Jean was born in Kelowna in 1921 and is pre-deceased by her parents William and Roberta Black (Band), her brother Doug, sister Ellen, and husband Stan. After completing her nurse's training in 1944 at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, Jean worked as an RN in Kelowna, Duncan, Nanaimo and Vancouver before becoming a stewardess with CP Air. After her marriage and the birth of her children, Jean resumed her nursing career in Kelowna in 1965. Jean enjoyed music, antiques, art and traveling, but especially loved nature. This love of nature came from her very early childhood years living in the Joe Rich Valley and later, many happy summers visiting there after her pioneering parents moved to Kelowna. In more recent years, Jean had many happy times at the family cabin on Mission Creek as well as day trips and extended outings with the Central Okanagan Naturalists Club. Jean is survived by her four children Bill (Susan), Norman (Sandy), Lorna and Colin (Linda); grandchildren Julie, David, Rory, Holly, Airlie, Tom, Michael, Jeff, Jenny, and Steven; great-grandchild Gabriel Walsh and relatives in Kelowna, Vancouver, Ontario, the United Kingdom and South Africa. The family would like to thank the many excellent health care professionals who attended to Jean's well-being over the years. The empathy of Dr. Annette Stevens, the insight of Dr. Bill Carlyle, and the caring of Dr. Alexis Thomson were especially appreciated as was the dedication of the staff at the Joseph Benjamin and the Village On Mill Creek. A memorial service will be held at the Mission Estates clubhouse at 3370 Casorso Road at 2 pm on Sunday, April 13th. (The clubhouse can be accessed from Lanfranco) In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Friends of Mission Creek, c/o M. Foster, Vice President, 4825 Lakeshore Rd, Kelowna, V1W 4H6 (or a charity of your choice).

Picucha, Lydia Barbara Tuesday, 18 Dec 2007
Kitimat, BC
January 19, 1954 - December 18, 2007
Lydia passed away at home in Nanaimo, B.C. after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Lydia was surrounded by her family and friends and will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her loving husband Ken Slawson, parents Barbara and Jan Picucha, brothers Stefan (Carolyn), Chris Konieczny (Sharon), sister Grazyna Harrison, step daughters Dayyna (Brad) and Kendra (Chad), grandchildren Samantha, Trenton and Kamryn, Godchildren Daria Reczak and Blake Campbell, and “adopted” children Tiffany and Megan Campbell, and numerous other family members, friends and colleagues.
Lydia was born in Mercoal, Alberta in 1954 and with her family moved to Kitimat, B.C. in 1960. Lydia was devoted to life-long learning and teaching. She attended elementary/junior high school in Kitimat and then completed high school in Bruno, Saskatchewan in 1971. Next she completed the Professional Development Program at Simon Fraser University in 1979 and was awarded her professional teaching certificate. In 1994 Lydia spent a year mastering French in Angers, resulting in her ability to tell jokes fluently in two languages. Lastly, Lydia completed her Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision through Gonzaga University in 2004.
Throughout her career Lydia was a teacher and mentor to thousands. Lydia taught in Vernon, Kitimat, Nanaimo, and abroad with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation in Cameroon and St Lucia. She touched many lives and was an inspiration to all. Lydia’s life was about encouraging others to always strive to reach their full potential. Lydia always fought for the rights of others as shown in her many years working with various local teachers’ unions and later with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, negotiating for better learning and working conditions. In Lydia’s life no challenge was too big. Her motto was “Bring it On.”
Lydia was unique. When not following her passion of teaching, Lydia loved the outdoors. She swam competitively, skied, figure skated, scuba dived, fished, hunted, and jogged. In the past 12 years, her favourite pastimes were spending time with her best friend, partner and husband Ken, and walking with their dog Finnegan. Lydia was the life of any party and all who knew her counted on her to keep things organized. Lydia will always be remembered by her friends and family for her dynamic personality, her radiant smile, and her totally selfless devotion to giving of herself to the wants and needs of anyone she could help.
