Miller, Phyllis May Monday, 12 Nov 2007
Quesnel, BC
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Phyllis May Miller. Mom, passed away on November 12, 2007 at G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital at the age of 84. Along with grief also comes celebration of the wonderful person she was, and the life she lived to the fullest.
Phyllis was born the second child of four to Ruby and J.C. Mighton. On June 22, 1923 Phyllis was born in her grandfather's house in Vancouver, her mother had traveled there from Pemberton where the family lived until 1929, they then moved to Aldergrove. In 1931, her father succumbed to injuries he received in WW1, and the young Mighton family headed north to the Cariboo and settled in Moose Heights.
Going to school for the Mighton kids, Phyllis, and her older brother Lee was a two hour marathon. They would take the bush trails to 10 Mile Lake School on the Barkerville Rd. Their mom (Ruby) on Sunday afternoons would walk them around 10 Mile Lake and then turn them loose in the direction of the Sousag's home. Here they boarded thru the week and walked back on the weekends. As more families moved to Moose Heights they worked together and built the Moose Heights School, which put an end to the marathon walks.
After finishing school, Phyllis worked for many families in Quesnel and the Coca Cola Plant. During WW2 she moved to Vancouver and worked for Boeing, building aircrafts. During the war she kept in contact with a young man she had met in Quesnel, Alex Miller, who was overseas. After being discharged due to injuries Alex found his future bride. Phyllis and Alex were married in Agassiz, 1944.
Alex and Phyllis started their married life in Hope, there they farmed and had their first two children (Garry and Jim). The flood of 1948 uprooted the new family and they moved to higher and more familiar ground, Moose Heights. Here they purchased acreage and began to carve a farm from the bush that would eventually become Miller Dairy Farms. Here their daughter Kit was born.
Phyllis did whatever it took to be a mother and farmer's wife from cooking in camps, to raising 500 turkeys, growing potatoes commercially, milking cows and of course raising three children. Phyllis was also involved in many community functions including 4-H projects with family and friends. The early years of very long hours and hard work were all a training ground for the future.
When Alex became very ill, they retired from the farm and moved to the KL on Longbar. It was only 3 short years before he passed in 1980, but not before they had carved from the bush a lovely log home. Armed with what she had learned from years as a farmer's wife, Phyllis was able to manage on her own. She took great pleasure in gardening, cooking, and sewing.
By herself or with friends and family there was always something being produced from borsht to wine. No one left her home without a car full of something she had either made or grew.
On her own Phyllis tried some new adventures like traveling to New Zealand and Ireland, swimming and entering the Cariboo Marathon, a cross country ski event.
Mom was a huge part of her grandchildren's lives. She was always there to help with care and kept them in constant supply of homemade goodies. The grandchildren found refuge with Grandma, always kind and stable. We are so proud to be hers and she will be sadly missed by all that knew her.
Phyllis was pre-deceased by her husband Alex Miller, grandson Mike Collins and son Jim Miller.
She is survived by her brothers; Lee and Doug Mighton, sister Jean Bell, son Garry (Betty) Miller her daughter Kit (Gary) Collins, daughter-in-law (Nancy), five granddaughters; Dallas Hanson, Dayna Miller, Jennifer Collins, Jaidine Ketter, Trudy Miller, and three grandsons Lucas, Ben, and Jessie Miller, and 8 great- grandchildren.
A service will be held at the North Star Baptist Church, at 1p.m. Sat. Nov. 17 with Pastor Norman Botterill officiating.
The family has asked those wishing to make a donation in Phyllis' memory, may do so to the Quesnel Hospice Fund. In care of Quesnel & District Palliative Care Box 4537, Quesnel, B.C. V2J 3J8.
We, as Phyllis Miller's family wish to thank Dr. Walker, for his years of care, also Dr. Aziz for his care, the wonderful nurses at GR Baker for the gentle care they provided, and special thanks for the home care nurses for continual and understanding care.

Bentley, Hazel Newing Gerlitz Monday, 05 Nov 2007
Quesnel, BC
Hazel Newing Gerlitz Bentley passed away in G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital on November 5, 2007, just a few weeks short of her 94th birthday, after a long and courageous battle with bone cancer. Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 8, at Clayton’s Funeral Chapel with Jack Nelson officiating.
Hazel was the fifth child of a family of seven. Grandpa Newing had emigrated from England just before her birth, and Hazel arrived in Victoria as the family made their way around the country, following Grandpa’s business. The family lived a comfortable life, but all that changed in the thirties. Her father died, a depression started, and Hazel worked very hard on a series of odd jobs to scrape a living in difficult times. She was, fortunately, joined in the struggle by her first husband, Dutch, whom she married in 1937.
The war years brought more prosperity, and the birth of their only child, Carolyn. The family moved to Vancouver, and eventually settled in Richmond, where Hazel worked for Sears, and retired as the manager of their switchboard. It was during this time that she joined the Order of the Royal Purple, an organization very dear to her heart, and one she remained with for over forty years.
Hazel and Dutch packed up and moved, at retirement, to Quesnel, where the extended family: daughter Carolyn, son-in-law Albert Johnston, and eventually grandchildren Jennifer and Melinda, could still be together. After a sojourn at Bouchie lake, they moved to a mobile on Albert’s property. After that, grandchildren Jennifer and Melinda spent as much time wandering in and our of Nan’s house as they did their own. When Dutch died in 1981, Hazel remained active in the community. She volunteered with the Hospital Auxiliary, the Royal Purple, the Eastern Star, the Golden Centre, and enjoyed her time with the Quesnel Bowlers. If one wanted Nana for babysitting, an appointment had to be booked.
Despite advancing age, in her mind, Hazel never stopped being a young girl, brimming with adventure. The frugal spirit of the thirties was always with her, and she would garden in a decades-old plaid jacket, but she wouldn’t stir from the house without lipstick. At 77, she met her second husband, Jim Bentley, at the Quesnel Bowlers. And they enjoyed ten years together. She also saw her lovely great-grandchildren, Adam and Katherine Osmond, come into the world and start to grow. The family feels so blessed that Adam and Katherine are now old enough to remember their Grand-Nan as part of their lives.
That little house right beside her daughter suited Nana to a tee, and she never wanted to leave it. She fought hard, so hard, to remain independent and to remain there to the end of her days. She succeeded until this past nine months, when her illness took command of her body and she had to be hospitalized. The illness took her body - but never her spirit. She was visited each evening by a family member, and the staff would tell small stories of her day, usually how she made someone laugh. But pain and disability were growing, and death came as a kind friend, offering rest and peace.
It has been a commonplace saying recently that “it takes a village to raise a child.: Our small family has discovered that it also takes a village to see to the care and well being of our elderly. From her wonderful Dr. Walker (earlier Barber and Havens), to the kind people of Dunrovin and Homecare, to the best nursing staff in the immediate universe on the third floor of G. R. Baker, to Chris and Donna of Palliative Care, to her friends of Royal Purple and the Golden Centre, the family will remain forever grateful that her last months were made as interesting and comfortable as they could possibly be. They are additionally grateful that they were treated with such kindness and understanding by the staff of Clayton’s and by everyone with whom they came in contact.
Goodbye, Mom. We love you, and we will see you in our minds and in our hearts every tomorrow of our lives.

Browning, Hazel Sunday, 04 Nov 2007
Quesnel, BC
It is with great sadness that the family of Hazel Browning wishes to announce her passing.
Hazel was born in Fish Creek, Saskatchewan and was pre-deceased by her parents Harry and Mary Hlady and brother Eugene Hlady.
On November 4, 2007 Hazel passed away at G.R. Baker Memorial after battling a difficult illness with cancer. Hazel and her husband, Richard (Dick) Browning came to Quesnel in 1951. They were married for 63 years and throughout a large portion of that time she provided bookkeeping support for their business, R.G. Browning Enterprises. Her lifelong passions were painting and ceramics, gardening and gold panning with friends. With her wide array of artistic talents, she also enjoyed quilting, sewing, doing cross stitch and many other crafts. As a mother and grandmother, she took a delight in watching her boys play hockey at the local arena and cheering on her grandchildren from the gym bleachers. She was a member of the Quesnel Arts Society, Dunrovin Park Lodge Society and the White Cane Society.
A celebration of Hazel's life was held at her home with immediate family. Hazel will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband Dick, her sons Rodney (Brenda), Brian (Elodieanne) and Brett (Pam), brother Archie (Henny) Hlady, and grandchildren Laura (Brian), Kiley (Chad), Leah (Kirby), Christopher (Michelle and children Aden and Jordan), Lance, Amanda, Blair, Brooke, Richard and Heather.
Those wishing to honor Hazel's memory by way of a donation may do so to the Quesnel & District Palliative Care or the Canadian Cancer Society.
No funeral service will be held at Hazel's request.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at G.R. Baker Memorial hospital for the kind care that they provided.
