Ms. Margot Kathleen Louis
March 24, 1954 - August 28, 2007
Margot Kathleen Louis passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at home in Victoria, B. C. She is survived by her father, Harry Louis, her brother, Greg, and his wife, Diana, and her two nieces, Winnifred and Heather Louis. Margot was born in Buffalo, New York on March 24, 1954, and spent most of her childhood in Montreal. Having received her B.A. in English Literature from Smith College in Massachusetts, she moved to England where she acquired an M.A. in Medieval English Language and Literature from Oxford University, and then her Ph.D in English Literature from the University of Toronto. A foremost specialist in the poetry of A. C. Swinburne, Margot began teaching English Literature in 1987 at the University of Victoria where she was an active and highly-respected member of the academic community. She was a champion of feminist causes and writing, and a passionate student of the feminine divine. The largeness of spirit, empathy and intelligence that continued to radiate from her being even as her body declined were Margot’s final, extraordinary gifts to the family and friends who loved her deeply. Over the years she often quoted Walter Pater's famous desire to "burn with a hard, gem-like flame." With fierce grace, Margot did exactly that, until the end. She was a rare, just soul whose affinity with nature meant many pleasant hours observing birds, and so, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary -- https://swanlake.bc.ca/contactus.htm
