Mr. John Laurence Oxtoby
February 10, 1927 - August 22, 2007
John Laurence Oxtoby passed away August 22 at the age of 80 years. John was born Feb 10 1927 in Bradford, Yorks, England, son of Reginald Rycroft Oxtoby and Frances Maud Darling. John served in the British army between 1944 - 1946 and then emigrated to Canada in 1948. He married Isabelle Anne Rienks on October 25, 1950, in Windthorst Saskatchewan. They lived in Kipling, Sask, until 1955 when they moved to Regina, Sask.
John worked as a farm mechanic and then as a Refinery Master Operator at the Co-op Refinery from 1955 to 1984. John and Isabelle retired in 1984 to BC and greatly enjoyed their retirement years, building a house and looking after 5 acres of land overlooking Nanoose Harbour. John enjoyed mechanics, woodworking, jewelry making and photography; he could fix or build anything! He also loved gardening: growing fruit trees and rose bushes to enhance his property, proudly showing them off to their many visitors to the island. One of John's favourite pastimes was investigating family history. He compiled great volumes of information on family ancestors, and, over the years, made many new family contacts with whom he enjoyed corresponding and sharing family information. John participated in the Nanoose Bay South Climatological Observing program from 1988-2007, for which he received special recognition.
John was a gentle man with a good sense of humor and strong family values and had many true friendships over the years.
John is predeceased by his parents, sister Joyce and brothers-in-law Tom Houston and Joseph Doyle.
He is survived by one sister, Marjorie Doyle and her two sons, Martin (Liz), Peter (Catrine) and their families.
John leaves behind his wife Isabelle and their family of 6 sons and 2 daughters: William, Reginald (Judie), Rodger, Helen (John), John (Karen), Kenneth (Debora), Michael, Betty (Christopher), 16 grandchildren: Donald, Christopher, Carla, Sarah, Alyssa, Janine, Kristina, Breanne, Stephan, Thomas, Derek, Alicea, David, Isabella, Claudia and James, 3 great-grandchildren, Isabella, Braden and Jack.
John's family wish to extend their appreciation to the Nanaimo General Hospital's Sixth floor and Palliative Care Unit nursing staff and volunteers.

Mr Donald Herbert Medley
March 27, 1935 - August 23, 2007
Medley, Donald Herbert, born in Nanaimo on March 27, 1935 passed away in Bowser on August 23, 2007.
Pre-deceased by his dad Fred, mom Marge and son Andrew.
Donnie will be lovingly remembered by his wife Barb, children Joann, Peter, Pam, Dean, Chuck, Ken, Gilbert, as well as brothers Fred and Barry and extended family and especially Wylie his faithful companion.
Donnie grew up in Nanaimo, as a boy enjoyed boating with his brother Fred and his parents on the “Fredon.” Hunting and hockey were his primary pursuits with his brother, cousin, father and friends. He took great pride in lavishing the family with the stories of his achievements as a player with the Nanaimo Clippers Hockey team. A puck to the eye finished his hockey career with the RCAF in Belleville, Ontario, when men were men and goalies didn’t wear masks.
In the later years his passion was watching the grandkids grow, playing cards, hiking, reading and cooking and sharing stories at the Legion with “The Guys.” His hand-written cookbook will be cherished by the family for many years to come. He especially enjoyed his time in the outdoors with his wife Barb and Wylie.
A modest and humble man who did not give in to sensationalizing things, but the next time you hear thunder in the sky, it’s the crowd cheering for Dad making another great save in the Big Game Upstairs!
Funeral Service was held Thursday, August 30, 2007 at 1:00 pm at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1 Newcastle Avenue, Nanaimo, BC.
