ALBERT EDWIN SCHNELL, C.C.C., Hon. B.A.S.
August 9, 1935 – August 23, 2018

With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our dear husband and father, Albert Edwin Schnell, at home at the age of 83. He was a gentle and loving pillar of strength and will be missed immensely by Rosemarie, his beloved wife of 57 years, son Andre, and daughter Marion. Albert was predeceased by his loving parents Paul and Franziska Schnell. He will be missed greatly by extended family in Switzerland including his dear brothers Paul (Erika) and Hans (Liselotte), brother-in-law Eugen (Christa), and nieces Daniela (Christian), Eliane (Markus), Carole (Rolf), Viviane, and their sons and daughters.
Albert was extraordinarily caring, compassionate and generous to all. He was a man of strong faith in God and relied heavily on the Lord. Albert was an active member of Yorkminster Park Baptist Church in Toronto and, prior to that, The Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul in Montreal. House of Compassion of Toronto was also dear to his heart.
Born and raised in Zurich, Switzerland, Albert followed his great passion for cooking and quickly rose to become a world-renowned chef. He was blessed with an illustrious 50-year career in the culinary field, of which the last 45 years were with Hilton International in Montreal and then Toronto. At the age of 28, he became Executive Chef at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel and four years later was appointed as Corporate Executive Chef of Hilton Canada, the position he held until his retirement from Hilton Toronto in 2000.
Albert was fondly referred to as “Papa Schnell” by those who worked with him over the years. He was a mentor to many in all corners of the world and with whom he maintained and cherished close friendships. Throughout his career he always acknowledged that the many accomplishments were the result of the entire team.
Albert passionately promoted his profession and the high standards of international cuisine and received awards for his lifetime commitments towards apprenticeship training and excellence in Culinary Arts. He was a member of several organizations including the Escoffier Society of Toronto, the Canadian Culinary Federation, and the Toronto Chapter of Les Toques Blanches of which he was a founding member and the first President.
Albert had so many interests and passions in life, such as nature, the outdoors, gardening, and learning. The family will fondly remember our vacations together in Switzerland.
A Memorial Service will be held at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church (1585 Yonge Street, Toronto) on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow. If desired, donations in memory of Albert may be made to Yorkminster Park Baptist Church or House of Compassion of Toronto.
