KAKOSCHKE, Rita Wells
Saturday, 25 Dec 2010
Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to so many, has gone to be with the Lord on December 25, 2010, after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer.
She is predeceased by her first husband, Harry Wells, sisters and brother.
Rita had such an impact on so many people and she will be sadly missed by her husband, Garry, her four daughters, Laura, Denise (George), Brenda and Heather (Chris), her six granddaughters and one great-grandson, as well as her extended family and many friends.
Rita was born in Swan River, Manitoba, on November 11, 1938.
She and her family moved to the Okanagan, when she was a child and has made her home in Kelowna, ever since, raising her four daughters, as well as many of her daughter’s friends.
When Rita married her second husband in 2009, their time spent together was filled with much travel, plenty of laughter and many joyous occasions, which we thank Garry for.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 31st at 11:00 am, at Evangel Church, 3261 Gordon Drive, Kelowna, B.C.
Rita’s family would like to give much thanks and appreciation to all the staff at the Hospice House, for making such a difficult time seem much easier.
You are all wonderful.

Wayne Arthur Simms
June 17, 1946 – October 16, 2011
The insidious beast named cancer claimed the life of Wayne Arthur Simms on Sunday, October 16, 2011.
The B.C. Cancer Agency and Campbell River Hospital (Chemo Unit) gave us unexpected time to spend with our Wayne this fall.
We will be forever grateful for the additional sunny days and laughter.
Born in Hubbards, Nova Scotia, he attended Shatford Memorial School and then on to St. Mary’s University in Halifax.
With his lifelong friend, Paul Harnish, they spent their time hunting and fishing together at Timber Lake and the Mercer Road area, something that began with their fathers’ love of those activities.
He left St. Mary’s University 1969 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a lasting friendship with Peter Young.
He then followed his brother, Rod, to North Bay, Ontario, where he joined the Bank of Nova Scotia.
His career, the Pacific Ocean and 52 weekends of golf per year, called him to B.C.
He moved through the bank in progressively more senior roles, with his final position as Deputy Center Manager and Senior Credit Manager at the B.C. DFC in Richmond. Here, he spent the next 15 years, until retirement.
By this time, Wayne’s family had grown to include 2 sons, his wife, Dale and 2 step-daughters.
In 2005, Wayne and Dale set off on an adventure to Campbell River.
The next 6-and-a-half years brought days of golfing, trolling for salmon and watching the market.
Wayne was never without a deck of cards, constantly dealing 4 bridge hands.
He enjoyed his time as treasurer at Storey Creek Golf Club, golfing with Bob and the boys, fishing the river with George & fighting Sailor for a warm sunny spot.
Wayne’s pride and joy were his sons, step-daughters, their spouses and even "more importantly", his 5 grandchildren.
Predeceased by his father, Roderick Keith Simms (1985) & brother, Rhodrick Harold Simms (2006).
Survived by his heartbroken family: In Nova Scotia - his mother, Frances; brothers, Gary (Sandra), Greg (Carol); sister, Judy Hopkins (Paul) and numerous nieces and nephews.
In B.C., his loving and devoted wife, Dale, sons, Chris (Eva-Maria) and Steve (Carolyn), step-daughters, Sherri Dawson (Pat) and Shanna Lachance (Terry), grandchildren, (in order of age) Jacob, Christopher, Sydney, Alexandra, Victoria.
A memorial gathering will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, October 21st, 2011 at Maritime Heritage Centre, 621 Island Highway, Campbell River, B.C.
The family encourages everyone to bring a "Wayne" story to share.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The B.C Cancer Agency or Campbell River Hospital are requested.

They moved to a farm west of Chilliwack, where Diane and Wayne were born.
At this time, he helped build the oil pipeline from Hope to Coquihalla.
The family moved to Ryder Lake, on a 40-acre farm, renting for seven years, (which was eventually bought and he built the homestead).
Over the next forty years, Sam worked at Harrison, (with several logging companies).
Sam farmed on weekends, during fire season and was home during the winters.
Verna and his children helped to work the farm in his absence.

Shapiro, Roberta K.
1937-2011
We regret to announce Roberta’s passing at Lady Minto Hospital on Saturday night, October 15th.
Roberta loved living on Salt Spring, though, in recent years, severe COPD kept her from enjoying all the Island had to offer.
Salt Spring was her West Coast Martha’s Vineyard, an island she had frequently visited while growing up in Massachusetts.
Roberta and Stan purchased a retirement home on Salt Spring, on the second day of a brief visit in 1992.
"The Island chooses its people and it doesn’t take long", she would say.
Roberta grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated with a BA in English from Boston University.
She then completed two years at Boston University’s Law School, before transferring to Temple Law School in Philadelphia, when she and Stan got married.
After four-and-a-half years in Philadelphia, they moved to Montreal, where Roberta worked, in turn, as an Assistant General Counsel in the Law Department of Sun Life of Canada, as a U.S. tax specialist for an international accounting firm, and as an Assistant Vice-President, in charge of Bell Canada’s Tax Department.
In 1980, a one-year stay in Vancouver led, long before the year was over, to a decision to relocate.
Roberta began her career in Vancouver, by passing the B.C. Bar, thus becoming one of the very few lawyers in British Columbia qualified to practice in both the U.S. and Canada.
She then spent the final fifteen years of her career, first with another international accounting firm and then, in private practice.
She retired in 1996, and a year later, she and Stan moved permanently to their Salt Spring home.
Until her health interfered, Roberta pursued long deferred interests in tai chi and painting.
Roberta leaves behind, in addition to her husband, Stanley, her sister, Barbara Stone and her brother-in-law, Richard Stone; their two daughters, Julie and Donna; her brother-in-law, Abe Porter and his three children, Matthew, Philip and Lesley Porter; Matthew’s wife, Kathy and Phil’s wife, Sue; and five grand-nieces and nephews.
Roberta was most grateful to all those who cared for her over the last few years — Dr. Bobbie Creighton, always both able and understanding, for all he did, the "on call" physicians and dedicated nursing staff in Lady Minto’s Emergency Unit, and the wonderful and caring members of Salt Spring’s Ambulance Service.
Thanks as well to the SSI Fire Department, for first responder assistance when needed and for always being there to help with transfers, and to all the homecare workers from Beacon Community Services who visited Roberta.
At Roberta’s request, there will be no service.
Also, no flowers please.
Instead, if you are so inclined, please make a contribution in Roberta’s name, either to the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation, or to the charity of your choice.
