Dr. James McAnulty, M.B., Ch.B., D.P.H.
Born 26 March 1929, Edinburgh, Scotland,
Died 13 August 2009, Kelowna, British Columbia, aged 80
Survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, A. Imelda McAnulty; his five children, Catherine Mori (Brian), Jerry McAnulty, Nicholas McAnulty (Tracy), Adrian McAnulty (Julie) and Greg McAnulty (Michele); his 12 grandchildren, Michael, Greg, Tyler, Adrian, Sean, Chris, Lisa, Callie, Carmen, Kyle, Nicole and William; his two great-granddaughters Meeghan and Akira.
Born the eldest of eight, his father often away in the Royal Navy, James learned early to pitch in and help at home: the lean war years were not so lean with this avid young rabbit-hunter filling the pot!
Too young to serve in World War II, James saw military service afterwards for three years in the Royal Marine Commandos, keeping the peace in Palestine, Tripoli and Malta, before returning to complete his medical degree at the University of Edinburgh (1957).
He had declined Oxford's invitation to study.
Two years after graduation, he emigrated to Saskatoon with his family, joining the RCAF as second flight lieutenant (medical corps).
As the family moved from one part of Canada to the other, James took a diploma in Public Health (University of Toronto) and served as a medical health officer at the Boundary Health Unit and in the Kootenays, before finally settling the brood in the Okanagan.
There, he practiced family medicine for many years, before retiring.
James was a fine writer, contributing many letters to the editor and writing scholarly papers.
He was proudest of a very well-received paper "Sleepy Lagoon" (Canadian Medical Journal, 1964), written when he was a medical health officer.
This paper challenged the outmoded sewage treatment practices of the time (the 1960s).
His firmly-held convictions in this and other areas led him to run, unsuccessfully, as a provincial NDP candidate in 1968.
James was a voracious reader, had a formidable memory to the end and delighted in participating in a lively debate.
He died peacefully with his beloved Imelda at his side. Requiescat in peace.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St Edward's Catholic Church, 11123 E Okanagan Centre Rd., Winfield, B.C., on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 11.30 a.m., with Father Cesar MacAriola as celebrant.
Interment to follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
