Bleue (nee Kennedy), Betty Louise
Oct 5, 1918 - May 13, 2013

Betty was born in Cobourg, Ontario, October 5, 1918, and passed away peacefully, on Monday, May 13, 2013, with family both by her side, and holding her in their hearts, at her home, the Village By The Station, in Penticton, B.C.
She was the youngest of three children of Judson Theodore Able Otto Mortimer Kennedy and Caroline Ann Kennedy (nee Niles) of Cobourg.
Her father ran a Men’s shop, at 38 King St. W.; her mother was a seamstress.
Betty was sweet, kind, and generous with her time.
Over her 94 years, she met all sorts of people wherever life took her, liked to hear their stories, and get to know them.
From childhood, she liked many sports, to swim, skate, play tennis, badminton, and softball, and to read all types of books, both at recess, and, at night, when her light was thought to be out.
She loved a challenging card or board game, jigsaw, or crossword.
Betty graduated from Cobourg Collegiate, in 1938, then from Shaw's Business School's Secretarial Course, in Toronto (even taking one class from her sister), after which she moved to the big city.
Her first job in 1939, tested and developed her new clerical, secretarial and shorthand skills (the latter not easily found nowadays), at B.C. Plywoods (Ont).
In 1942, Betty left this job to marry Donald Carlyle Galbraith.
As Don was in the Air Force (administration), they moved frequently with his postings.
During some, in Regina, Calgary, Newfoundland (for 2 years), and Moncton, Betty had to live apart, find work, and stay with friends, or relatives. She continued advancing in secretarial and stenographic work in Ottawa, for Civil Defence Service, including their Censorship branch.
In Toronto, she worked briefly for Pinkerton's Detective Agency, visiting movie theatres twice a week, reporting on conditions and staff behaviour. She left to support the war effort, first in the War Plant, then, in 1944, at Victory Aircraft Ltd., in their Lancaster Bomber Spare Parts division, in Malton.
In 1945 in Toronto, Betty became a housewife, and Don worked in the steel sales business, traveling widely in Ontario. They had two much loved children, Carol Ann Galbraith (Hurley, now Currie) in 1947, and Donald James Galbraith, in 1950. In 1955, she resumed secretarial work, first several years part-time at Dominion Rubber, then, after the family settled in Don Mills, full time at Philco-Ford, in 1963. Here, for the next eleven years she was an Executive Secretary in the “Tech Rep” department. This included trips to San Diego and Sacramento to hand deliver tenders (also rare now). The family adopted two cats in Don Mills, feeding Betty’s softhearted lifelong love of cats, and of most fuzzy critters, wild or tame. You’d often see her crouch patiently, coaxing the wild ones closer at any opportunity, especially camping, picnicking, or exploring.
Her first marriage, of almost 30 years, ended in divorce, in Toronto. A few years later, in 1975, Betty retired, moving out west to North Vancouver, B.C., wooed by Arthur William Bleue, whom, in 1981, she wed. She happily gained two more children, his daughters Barbara Joan Marolla, and Sandra Lynn Bleue. Betty delighted in time spent with them, and loved them very much. Art worked as a technical representative for electronic instrument sales companies, having transferred the radar skills he learned during the war, to this career. This also led to his ham radio hobby. Betty joined a ladies’ bridge club and a bowling team, explored “back roads” with Art, accompanied him to “ham” events, and browsed the shops with us ladies, to “glitz up”. She was partial to a having fun with a little sparkle in her outfits, and had a great eye for color.
Betty loved cruises with Art, traveling to Alaska, the Panama, and the Caribbean. They took up ballroom dancing, and practiced on board. They moved to Penticton for a more relaxed pace of life, first in a townhouse, then in an Athen's Creek Retirement Lodge apartment. They volunteered at an Owl Rehab Centre. At age 80, Betty took up rowing at the Lakeshore Hotel gym, to help her cope with persistent headaches – a true inspiration! In late 2006, health issues, and waiting lists, forced each to move to different care residences. On Valentines Day, 2008, after over a year of separation, Betty joined Art as a resident at the Village By the Station, for their last few years. Here, the focus is on having a good and varied life, full of daily activities and caring friendly people.
We treasure and thank each of the Village’s residents, staff, and volunteers, who were always so very good to her and Art, and to her family, us, to the end. Thanks also to her very supportive Doctors Caskey, Gans, Sloan, and Blanchard (and his team).
Betty was predeceased by her cherished older sister Lenore (“Noni”) Kennedy and brother Judson Kennedy Jr., and sadly, in February 2012, after thirty years of marriage, by her loving husband Art Bleue (VE7 BPV). Betty was much loved. She will be dearly missed by her children, Carol (and husband Ralph), Don, Barbara (and husband Franco), and Sandra, her grandchildren Alyssa, Heather , Robert and Catherine, and Morgan, and their families, as well as by her nieces, nephews, and good friends, young and old. We wish her peace and happiness now.
Betty wished cremation, and will rest next to Art, in the Veteran's Section of the Penticton Lakeview Cemetery. We're sure she would love you to visit her, and the many deer there, any time. A small private family gathering will take place later. Donations, if desired, may be given to the Village By the Station, the SPCA, or any charity of your choice in Betty’s memory. We’d love to hear your stories.

He will best be remembered as a world traveller with an extraordinary sense of adventure and zest for life that was often shared with lifelong best friends, Klaus Neumann (Gisela), Larry Schiebel (Helga) and Peter Pelz (Maureen).

A private celebration of his life and adventures will be held in late September.
