Lanning, Bob
October 1, 1954 - February 8, 2009
Bob Lanning of Kitimat, B.C., born October 1, 1954, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, February 8, 2009, in Richmond, B.C.
His wit, his love of nature, and his compassion stayed with him to the end.
He will be greatly missed by Jim and Maureen, Terry, Lubos, family in Vancouver, and the many friends in Kitimat, who knew him.
A memorial gathering will be held in Kitimat, in the spring. Bob was 54.
Please give generously to the fight against cancer.
Burr, Erich
January 28, 1922 - January 28, 2009
Erich Burr, born January 28, 1922 in Nordenham, Germany, passed away peacefully at Queen's Park Care Center on January 28, 2009, with Jean and Janice at his bedside.
Erich was predeceased by his wife, P. Marguerite (MacCrostie) in 1971.
He is fondly remembered and sadly missed by his loving wife of 18 years, Jean (Froese); his children and their families; son, Eric (Lori) Burr (Surrey) and Eric's children, Amanda and Ashley; daughter, Marguerite (Dan) Csikos (Vancouver) and Marguerite's children, Megan and Anthony; daughter, Elisabeth (Dieter) Gerjets (Germany) and Elisabeth's children, Janna, Ute and Amke; and Erich's great-grandchildren, Bennet and Carolin. Also sadly missed by step-children; Gerald (Dianne) Froese and Janice Froese (Ron Hooge) and Janice's children, Graydon and Alyssa.
Upon completion of high school, Erich joined the Merchant Marines and was on training in Britain when WWII broke out.
The war years left a lasting impression on Erich that stayed with him until his death.
Erich immigrated to Canada in 1951, where he landed in Quebec, and worked in the mines.
He moved to Kitimat, in 1954 and began his Alcan career as a raise miner building the "penstocks" on the Kemano Electric project, eventually became the foreman of the potlines and retired in 1979 from Alcan's training dept.
Upon leaving Kitimat, he lived in Terrace, Duncan, Abbotsford, and Coquitlam, making great friends wherever he was.
The family would like to thank Ursula and the staff of the Residences at Belvedere, for making Erich's life easier in his final months.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2009, at The Residences at Belvedere at 1:30 p.m., 750 Delestre Ave., Coquitlam, B.C..

Charlotte (Oma) Sarabun (Nee Sauter) passed away January 17, 2009, at the age of seventy-eight, at Foothills Hospital, Calgary, AB.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Ollie, in February 2005, and parents, Franz and Maria.
Charlotte is survived by her children, Oldrich, Jr., Grace, Roy (Lana) of Fernie, Roland of Kitimat, Byron (Sue) of Jaffray, Sonya (Albert) of Cranbrook, Debbie (Richard) of Burnaby; grandchildren, Darren (Tiffany), Ryan (Grace), Roland, Jr., Celecia, Breighton, Romni (Pat), Keira (Jeremy), Kayla, Bryce, Dillian Colin; great-grandchildren, Natalia and Henry; her sister, Erna, brothers, Walter, Kurt and Peter, and many nieces, nephews and good friends.
A wonderful wife, mother and Oma (grandmother), Charlotte will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered as the glue that bound the family together, a mother who, at times, could be persistent, but most importantly, as a mother and Oma with a heart of gold.

Shumey, Peter

Peter Shumey, a former long-time resident of Rossland, B.C., and Christina Lake, B.C., passed away at Noric House in Vernon, B.C., on Thursday, June 25th, 2009, at the age of 86 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by three sons, John (Ronda) Shumey of Vernon, B.C., Emil (Beatrice) Shumey of Nelson, B.C. and Lawrence (Lori) Shumey of Castlegar, B.C.; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Ryan, Mataya, Matthew, Sonia, Annette, Shawn (Cynthia), Christopher and Jami (Josh); three great-grandchildren, Kaleigh, Madeline and Noah; one brother, Bill (Mary) Shumay of Regina, Saskatchewan; two sisters, Olive Dziaduck of Regina, Saskatchewan and Pauline Kosior of Weyburn, Saskatchewan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Annie, on March 6th, 2007; two brothers, John and Mike; and three sisters, Maggie, Mary and Katie.
Peter was employed at Cominco in Trail for 27 years.
He loved playing cards, Crib and Whist and his greatest enjoyment in life came from maintaining his home and yard.
In respecting Peter's wishes, he was cremated and his remains will be laid to rest with his beloved wife Annie in the Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Forks, B.C. on Thursday, July 9th, 2009.

Fred, Munro
April 29, 1925 - June 7, 2009
Munro, Fred of Rossland, British Columbia, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 7, 2009, at Poplar Ridge Pavilion. .
Born in Trail on April 29, 1925, Fred lived in Rossland, his entire life.
Fred was in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1945, and has since been a Legion member.
During his many years as a mechanic, he worked at Rossland Co-op Transportation, Rossland Auto Service and the Department of Highways, from where he retired in 1987.
He enjoyed many hobbies and sports including woodworking, huckleberry picking, travelling, curling and he was an avid football, baseball and hockey fan.
Fred also believed strongly in giving back to his community.
After he retired, he supported Meals-on-Wheels as a driver, volunteered as a bartender at the Legion and spent many hours at the Rossland museum.
The community spirit that Fred exemplified is on display for all to see in the restoration job he did on the vintage train car located at the Rossland Museum.
Fred is survived by his step-children, Mervyn (Marlene) and Alan Fry, his grandchildren, Brian (Lora), Teresa, Darrel, Daven, Glenn, Karen, Jeff and Leanne, and 7 great-grandchildren, Peter, Steven, Ian, Keegan Fry, Brooklyn, Hope Donovan and Leah Fry.
He was predeceased by his long-time friend and love, Jeanette Fry (1996), stepson, Wayne Fry (1980), brother, William, mother and father.
A Celebration of Fred's life will be held at the Rossland Legion Friday, June 19th, at 11 a.m., with Minister Keith Simmonds officiating.
Bill Clark of Personal Alternative Funeral Services is entrusted with arrangements.

Slocombe, June - Passed away peacefully on May 18, 2009 after a short illness, at age 81,
Dear mother of Scott Slocombe, Tracy (Carl) Hooch-Antink, and Isabel (Paul) McKinnon, and much missed Granny of Jessica & Julia Nilsen, Megan McKinnon, Fiona Hooch-Antink, and Tamlyn Slocombe.
In keeping with her wishes, no funeral was held, but a Celebration of Life will be held at: St. Andrews United Church in Rossland, Wednesday, July 8 at 11:30 am.
