Thom, Lillian Eileen Orrisa
October 29, 1907 - December 21, 2009
Lillian passed away peacefully at the Polson Extended Care Unit on December 21, 2009, in her 103rd year.
Lillian was predeceased by her mother, Minnie Hembling (1947), her father, Orris "OW" Hembling (1967), her husband, Archie (1956), her three brothers, Clarence, Edgar, and George, and her two sisters, Margaret and Doris.
She is survived by her sons, Donald (Linda) of Ottawa and Murray (Loretta) of Carr's Landing, her grandchildren, Hamish (Maureen), Stuart (Mot), Ian (Jennifer), Samantha (Peter), and Murray (Jordan), and nine great-grandchildren: Kaija, Georgia, Mexx, Euan, Zoƫ, Morgan, Abby, Ever, and MacGregor.
Many nieces and nephews will fondly remember her.
Lillian was born October 29, 1907 in Didsbury, Alberta, and moved with her family to Oyama, B.C., in 1917.
After graduating from the Vernon Jubilee Hospital nursing training school in 1929, she continued to nurse at the VJH until her marriage to Archie in 1933.
When illness forced him to retire in 1940, she resumed her nursing career and in 1948, she was appointed Matron and Director of Nursing in the newly completed VJH building and remained in that position until 1961.
After leaving VJH, she continued nursing for a period of time, as a relief nurse for the Red Cross Outpost Hospital in Blue River, at the summer army cadet camp in Vernon, and the Edgewood Hospital.
She finished her nursing career at the Kaslo Hospital.
In her retirement, Lillian enjoyed traveling across Canada and to Germany and Ireland to visit family and friends.
An avid bird hunter and fisherman, in her later years, she enjoyed lawn bowling as a member of the Vernon Lawn Bowling Club.
She also enjoyed summers as a member of the Vernon (Kalamalka) Country Club.
As well, she was active in the seniors' five-pin bowling at the Polson Lanes and in the Friends of History meetings.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Polson Extended Care Unit and Dr. Waldron for the compassionate care of Lillian in her final years.
Cremation has taken place and the ashes will be interred next to her husband in the Vernon Cemetery.
A memorial tea will be held at a later date.

French, Gordie
Monday, 21 Dec 2009
Gordie passed away peacefully on December 21 with his loving wife Flo and good friends Delores, Richard and Sheila by his side at Polson Special Unit.
Gordie is survived by his wife Flo of 27 years, daughter Denise, son Barry, stepchildren Wesley, Gennette (Dean) and Michael, grandchildren Josh, Anthony, Darcy, Lance, Andura, Ashley and Logan. Much loved great-granddaughter, Adawina.
Gordie was predeceased by one son, Bruce, one grandson, Christopher and one stepson, Timothy.
Gordie worked at Zeppers Motors in Vancouver, for 22 years, and B.C. Hydro for 25 years.
Special thanks to Dr Leminski for the compassionate care and the very loving staff at Polson Extended Unit.
At Gordie's request, there will be no funeral service.
There will be a private celebration of Gordie's life at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, food and flowers.

FRIESEN, Peter
(Jan. 7, 1923 - Feb. 4, 2009)
Peter Friesen passed away at the age of 86 years, in the Abbotsford Regional Hospital on Wednesday, February 4, 2009.
He was born in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan, and moved to Mission, B.C., in 1941.
He is a veteran of World War II, serving three years with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
His employment with Canada Safeway for 41 years, which took him to various locations in the Fraser Valley, before retiring in Chilliwack, and later, moved to Abbotsford in 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of 64 years of marriage; children: Lynne (Henry) Heidebrecht, Les (Marg) Friesen; Ella (Bill) Born; Carol (Glenn) Nickerson; Dennis (Faith) Friesen; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of choice.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Level Ground Mennonite Church (West Abbotsford Mennonite Church), 31216 King Road, Abbotsford, B.C.
DAHL, Stanley George
(April 20, 1938 - Feb. 3, 2009)
Stan Dahl, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away peacefully on Feb. 3, 2009 in Chilliwack, B.C.
Stan will be greatly missed and always remembered and loved by his family; wife Marie; son, Ken (Leanne); daughters, Sheila Armstrong, (Barry), Sharon (Graham Dyble), Cheryl Fitzsimmons (Rob), and Shannon Kraft (Thomas); grandchildren: Stephanie, Christopher, Kiel, Shanda, Mike, Schyler, Cody, Allissa, Caitlynn, Kelly, Dylan, Josh, Breanne and Kayla; brother, Ken; sister, Lindsay; and nieces and nephews: Geoffrey, Ken, Tanis, Shea, and Daniel.
Stan is predeceased by his brother Daniel, his parents Stan Sr. and Phyllis Dahl, and his grandson, Jarrett.
Stan was a long-time employee of the B.C. Telephone Co as well as B.C. Cellular before retiring in the early 1990's.
After retiring from B.C. Tel, unable to settle into full retirement, Stan and Marie went south to broaden his career by working in San Jose, CA as software trainer for a software company.
Returning to Canada a few years later, he again changed direction in his career working part time for Johns Electronics and NetSat selling and installing satellite systems where he met many great people and got extreme pleasure from learning about his customers lives. Until his passing he continued to keep in contact with many of these people that he added to his life.
Outside of his family and work he had a passion for photography which he applied to his other areas of his interests - amateur theatre production, Toastmasters and the sport of figure skating. A dedicated volunteer with the Chilliwack Players Guild, the Cheam Skating Club, Skate Canada, Chilliwack Happy Times Jazz Society, the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life and many more community organizations. Stan's contributions will be dearly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, February 9, 2009 at 1:30 PM at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home located at 45865 Hocking Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made the Canadian Cancer Society.
SPICER, Thomas (Tom)
(July 6, 1923 - Feb. 2, 2009)
Born in England, to Naaman and Ada Spicer.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 61 years, Enid; daughter, Elaine and husband, Dale Baglo; three grandchildren: Kirsten, Justin and Jonathan; sister, Vera and husband, Brad in England; many relatives and friends.
During WW 2, Tom served for 6 years in the RAF; married Enid in 1947, and emigrated to Canada, in 1952, where he worked as an electrician.
Tom enjoyed fishing, woodcarving and his flower garden.
Memorial Service to be held on Monday, February 9, 2009 at 1:30 pm.
YUSKIN, Leo William
(March 11, 1935 - February 1, 2009)
Peacefully, Leo William Yuskin of Chilliwack, British Columbia passed away at the age of 73, on February 1, 2009 at the Chilliwack General Hospital.
Leo was born in Eriksdale, Manitoba on March 11, 1935 to Bill and Flora. He is survived by his brothers Anthony Yuskin (Winnipeg, MB), and Joseph (Baby) Yuskin (Santee, CA); his daughters: Carol Lawrence, Jo-Anne Yuskin, Karen Yuskin, his son Kelly (Sandra) Yuskin (Winnipeg, MB); and, his stepson Rory Kohinski (Noreen) (Surrey, B.C.). He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Leo was predeceased by his infant brother Roman (1941), his Father (1968) and Mother (1996), and his wife Audie of 31 years in 1999.
Leo spent his early years on the farm in Eriksdale, Manitoba, later moving to Winnipeg. Leo drove truck for several companies in Winnipeg before moving to British Columbia in 1969. It was in B.C. that he later established Yuskin Transport LTD. It was on his ferry trips to Vancouver Island that he established many of his lifelong friendships.
Leo and his wife returned to Winnipeg in 1987 for two years. Upon returning to B.C., Leo gained employment as Shipper/Receiver (dock cop as he referred to it) at Terminal Produce in Vancouver, B.C. In 1999, Leo retired to his friend, Jan Kleven's, farm in Chilliwack, B.C. and continued to do what he did best - feeding the horses, pitching hay, rebuilding an old truck, fixing things up and playing with his dog Ruby.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
A luncheon celebrating Leo's life will be held on February 7, 2009 1:30 p.m. at the Seniors Hall, 45795 Victoria Avenue, Chilliwack, B.C.
Another celebration is to take place in Winnipeg and will be announced at a later date in the Winnipeg Free Press.

SOTH, Klaus Dieter
Feb. 1, 1931 - Jan. 30, 2009
With great sadness, we announce the passing of our hero, husband, Dad and Opi.
Klaus fought for two weeks after his tragic accident before passing with his children and wife at his side at VGH on Jan. 30, 2009. Klaus was born Feb. 1, 1931 in Tornau, Germany.
He immigrated to Manitoba in 1951, and proudly became a Canadian citizen in 1957. He worked for the Hudson Bay Trading Co., he was also a logger, a crane operator. Later, in 1969, after moving to Yarrow and then Abbotsford, he was a real estate agent and eventually in 1981, he became a hog farmer. In every job that he did, he worked very hard and was respected as one of the best of his trade.
He loved hunting, fishing, camping, photography, and his woodturning.
Klaus was married to the love of his life, Marianne for 53 years. They had many hardships and joy together over the years, but through it all, their love and respect for each other held the family unit strong.
Klaus was honoured by the Governor General of Canada for bravery; he also was given the Carnegie medal for his bravery in putting his own life in danger to save a policewoman's life.
Klaus was a strong-willed man, but always did what he felt was the honourable and respectable thing, and always, always put family first.
He was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by his wife, Marianne, his sons, Michael Soth (Sandra), Rolf Soth (Trish), Peter Soth (Donalda), his daughters, Susi Vander Wyk (Bruce), Heidi Struys (Francis) and his grandchildren: Nicole, Katrina, Erick, Ryan, Emily, Erica, Karl, Janelle, Tyler, Brodie, Paige, Dexter, Holli, Amy, Marianne, Jami and Stephanie.
Our family would like to welcome anyone who wishes to join them, in a celebration of his life, on February 7th 2009 at 10:00 a.m. from Henderson's Funeral Home - 45901 Victoria Avenue, Chilliwack. A light lunch to follow at German Canadian Club - 45910 Alexander Street, Chilliwack. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canuck Place Children's Hospice.
