BAKER, Graham Mervyn
Graham Baker of Kelowna, B.C., passed away in his home comforted by his loving wife, soulmate and bestfriend, Coralynn, by his side, on the morning of Friday, September 20, 2013. Graham is survived by and in the hearts of son, Vernon (Suzy) Baker, Vancouver, B.C., daughter, Melody (Todd) Baker-Erickson, Salt Spring Island, step-daughter, Lisa (Glenn) Moss, Ottawa, Ontario, grandson, Brooks Baker-Erickson and granddaughter Charley Baker-Erickson and grandsons Brendan and Brayden Moss. Survived by siblings residing in England, sister Shirley (Barry) Harvey and sister Marie (Ken) Walker.
Tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision. We are traveling by train. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the continent. Out the windows we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides of city skylines and village halls.
On a certain day, at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Once we get there so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed puzzle. Sooner or later, we realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is in the trip. The station is only a dream that constantly outdistances us.
So, “Relish the moment,” it isn’t the burden of today that drives men mad, it is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. Stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles, instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.
At Graham’s request there will be no service.

BRANDLEY, Irene

Location: Springfield Funeral Home
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our aunt, Irene Brandley, on September 12, 2013, at the age of 99 years. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at Lakeview Lodge, West Kelowna with members of her family present.
Born Irene Wood, on July 31, 1914 in Saskatoon Sask., where she lived, was educated and worked until she enlisted in the RCAF in 1942. Her first posting was “overseas” to Newfoundland in a communications unit. She found this to be a great adventure until her discharge in 1946. She continued her affiliation with the RCAF being a member of the Air Force Association, and also as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 58 years. She and her late husband Don both received their 50 Year Medals in 2005. They were the only couple to receive Year of the Veteran medals for 50 years as members of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Following her discharge from the Air Force, it was on to the next adventure; marriage to her husband, Donald Brandley, who predeceased her in 2006 after almost 60 years of marriage. Being in the RCAF, they were posted to many places in Canada; their final posting before retirement being Cold Lake, Alberta. During their time there she did volunteer work in addition to working as an Adult Education Coordinator for the North for the Department of Education.
She and Don moved to the Okanagan in 1983 to enjoy a well-earned retirement featuring much golf, travel and Bridge, at which she was an avid player.
Predeceased by her parents, George and Jane Ann (“Jenny”) Wood of Saskatoon, sister Emily Dillon (Jack) of Winnipeg, and brother William (Bill) (Bernice) Wood of Kelowna.
She leaves to mourn, her nephews Stanley Wood (Sandy) and George Wood (Marci) together with four great nephews and one great niece, two great-great nephews and five great-great nieces.
Sincere thanks to Dr. Mike Banwell for the care and guidance he provided over many years and the staff at Lakeview Lodge in West Kelowna for their care and compassion; it is truly appreciated.
A Memorial Service will be held in Kelowna at the Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 21, 2013.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favourite charity.
