Byron Herbert McEwen
February 25, 1935 - January 15, 2009
Byron Herbert McEwen of Kamloops died January 15, 2009 at the age of 73.
He is survived by his sisters Alda Richards of Ashcroft B.C., Helene (Mickey) Gust of Paddockwood SK, and Ethel Crosthwaite (Percy) of Kelowna B.C., brothers Arthur McEwen (Helen) of Crestline CA, and Malcolm Ray (Joanne) of Ottawa, ON, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Helen in 1999.
Byron was born in Paddockwood, Saskatchewan on February 25, 1935 to Roy and Marie McEwen. Byron’s career path took many turns: railway brakeman, an apprentice electrician, paratrooper, furrier’s assistant and finally he found his niche with Corrections B.C., where he worked for twenty plus years.
His passions were fishing, camping, and photography: especially wildlife photography.
He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humour, his stiff competition at cards and his motto of doing “it my way.”
There will be a celebration of Byron’s life in the summertime at one of this favourite campsites.

Elsie Kirychuk
June 1, 1935 - February 13, 2009
On February 13, 2009 Alice “Elsie” Kirychuk passed away peacefully at the age of 73, with her family by her side. Elsie will be lovingly remembered by John Kirychuk, her husband of 54 years; son Brian (Debbie) Kirychuk and grandson Jason; son David Kirychuk; and daughter Cathy (Bruce) Vadnais and grandsons Tylor and Trevor. She will also be remembered by her brothers and sisters Joyce Stephenson, Stella (Stan) Dalgliesh, Cecil Medwid, Don (Irene) Medwid, Richard (Jennie) Medwid, Shirley (Eldon) Clairmont, Mae (John) Strichic, Victor (Maureen) Medwid, and Stan Medwid; brothers and sisters in-law Lewis Walker, Joyce Medwid, Darlene Medwid and Bill Kowalchuk, as well as her many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Elsie was predeceased by her parents Steve and Alice Medwid, brother Jerry Medwid, sisters Ann Kowalchuk, Jean Walker and brother in-law Roy Stephenson.
Mom was a beautiful shining star that will forever shine brightly.
We love you and will carry you in our hearts always.
At Elsie’s request, a Private Family Celebration of her life will be held in Kamloops B.C.

DENCY RUTH McCALLA
June 22, 1917 – February 16, 2009
Born in Edmonton, Dency spent her early years on the family farm in Bremner, Alberta as the youngest of eight children. For a short time she worked as a school teacher in rural Alberta before deciding to go into work with the United Church of Canada. After graduating from the University of Alberta, Dency began her church career in Winnipeg, subsequently working in Toronto, Saskatoon and Kamloops. After moving to the Kamloops United Church in 1973, Dency spent the rest of her career there. During her years in Kamloops she was an active member of the Soroptimist Club and the Kamloops Symphony Society.
Dency was predeceased by her parents William and Margaret McCalla, and her brothers and sisters, Fred, Ethel, Art, Helen, Edith, Louise and Bill. She leaves behind fifteen nieces and nephews, many grand nieces and nephews, great-grand nieces and nephews and her United Church family.
The family thanks the staff of the third floor west at the Royal Inland Hospital for the wonderful care and kindness they provided to Dency during her stays with them over the last several months. A special thank you also goes to her good friends Karen McClelland and Sandy Baird who have been wonderful and loving companions to Dency.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Kamloops United Church, 421 St. Paul Street.
Dency requested that donations be made to the Kamloops United Church Memorial Fund, in lieu of flowers.

Sheldon F. Sawada
May 1, 1964 - February 16, 2009
Sheldon F. Sawada peacefully passed away with his family by his side, on Monday, February 16th at Royal Inland Hospital.
Sheldon leaves behind his loving parents Fred and Hellen Sawada, his sister Brenda Sawada (Scott Carson), his two nephews Kaz and Kobe, his best friend Mike Russell and cousin Troy Sawada. Sheldon also leaves numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Canada and Japan. He was predeceased by Grandma & Grandpa Sawada and Grandma & Grandpa Salle.
Sheldon was born in Kamloops on May 1, 1964. He attended George Hilliard School and graduated from NorKam Secondary in 1982. Sheldon worked as a chief technician for Sperry Rail and travelled across Canada numerous times. He enjoyed the travelling involved with his work but always loved coming home to Mom’s home cooked meals. Sheldon experienced a severe stroke in 2006 and was a resident of Overlander Extended Care Hospital.
The family would sincerely like to thank all the staff and caregivers for their compassionate and committed care of Sheldon, which added to his good quality of life. Thank you to all who took the time to visit Sheldon. Thank you also to the ICU nurses and doctors at Royal Inland Hospital for making Sheldon so comfortable in his last days.

Gordon Miles Dean
May 8, 1954 - February 11, 2009
Gordon Miles Dean of Kamloops passed away on February 11, 2009 at 54 years of age.
Gordon is survived by his loving children Angela (Grant) Wood of Comox B.C. and Kelli (Sean) Dean of Blackfalds, Alberta; grandchildren Rachel, Emma, Hailey, Ryne Gordon and Hanna; mother Hilda Kendall, his siblings Walter Dean, Cliff Dean, Kathy Dean, Trish Berry, Donald Dean and Susan Henderson.
Predeceased by father Larry Francis Dean on September 5, 1978 and sister Wanda Dean on February 19, 1956.
Gordon was born in Kamloops and worked for the Kamloops School Board #24 for 26 years. He loved fishing, hunting, the outdoors, camping and fly-tying. Gordon loved to cook, listen to Elvis, and loved being with his family and friends.
The Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 21, 2009 in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Mary Widmer officiating.

Herbert "Herb" Hargreaves
August 27, 1929 - February 16, 2009
Herbert (Herb) Hargreaves passed away peacefully with his loving wife Linda holding his hand, on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the age of 79. Herb will be lovingly remembered by his wife Linda of 53 years, daughter Iris (Rob) and son Glen (Cindy). Also left with precious memories of Grandpa are his grandchildren Krystal, David and Sara, and great-grandchildren, Shania, Dillon and Ashley; and his brother Len (Bea).
Herb was pre-deceased by his sister Laura, and son Earl.
Herb was born on August 27, 1929 in Vanderhoof (Hulatt) British Columbia to Charles and Nellie Hargreaves. He grew up in Vanderhoof, British Columbia, moving to Kamloops, British Columbia in 1951. Herb and Linda (nee Gough) were married May 20, 1955 in Kamloops. He enjoyed a long career as a mechanic retiring from Kamloops School Board #24 in 1989. After his retirement Herb and Linda often traveled to Vancouver Island to enjoy salmon fishing, and visiting with friends. Herb will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous spirit, always helping those in need. Herb and Linda spent many years as volunteers at Ponderosa Lodge, bringing joy and smiles.
The family would like thank Dr. Collier, Dr. Rollheiser and Dr. Zsigmond, as well as the nursing staff at Royal Inland Hospital for their kindness and care.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, February 23, 2009 in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive. Viewing will take place prior to the service from 10:00 to 10:45 am in the Rosewood Room at Kamloops Funeral Home.

Brenda MacKenzie
September 10, 1949 - February 19, 2009
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother Brenda Maureen MacKenzie on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the age of 59. Although unexpected, it is of some comfort to those that loved her that mom passed away peacefully in her sleep. Mom is survived by her loving children Donnie (Sonia) MacKenzie of Calgary, AB, Tanya (Ross) Presta of Kamloops, BC; grandson Tristan MacKenzie, mom’s new found bundle of joy; former husband Don MacKenzie of Kamloops, BC; siblings Kenneth (Debbie) Conrad of Edmonton, AB, Bernard Conrad of Vancouver, BC; sister-in-law Sharon Conrad of Lake Echo, NS; and mom’s several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her fury little companion Kia who will sorely miss her. Mom was predeceased by her parents Florence and Edison Conrad of Dartmouth, NS and brother William Conrad of Lake Echo, NS. Mom was born on September 10th, 1949 in Dartmouth, NS. She moved to Kamloops, B.C. with her husband in 1969 and has lived here ever since. Mom will be forever remembered for her unprecedented generosity and kindness.

On February 28, 2009 Mrs. May Clarke of Pine Grove Care Centre passed away quietly at the age of 89 years.
May is survived by her son Percy Cox of Kelowna also her daughter Donna Varty of Kamloops.
She also leaves to cherish her memory two granddaughters Irene (Alan) Kloepper of Brooks, Alberta, Lisa Thompson of Penticton, great-grandchildren Justin, Julie, Kalee and Kirstee and great-great-grandchildren Ryder, Sophie Bella as well as one sister Dorothy Cox of Calgary and a brother Elgin (Gilberta) of Red Deer as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
May was predeceased by her loving husband Bill Clarke in 1992.
