PUTZ - Barbara Jean (Allison), of Ladysmith, formerly of Vancouver, passed away on September 29, 2000, age 63 years, after a battle with cancer. Survived by her loving family, husband Arthur, sons, Ian (Kelli Foster), Bryan (Melanie) and Gordon (Kate); grandchildren, Melissa, Ian, Robyn, Jacqueline, Bradley and Theresa; sisters, Pat Monson (Ian) and Linda Allison (Leslie Groberman); nieces, Maeve Ramsay and Laurie Talbot; aunts Dorothy Jackson and Marjorie Johnson, and many cousins. ROBINSON - Robert John, born June 5, 1920, passed away peacefully October 3, 2000 at home after a brief illness. Survived by his wife Katherine; brothers George and Bill (Joyce); sons Bill (Sharon) and Ken (Dianne); daughter Susie (Rick); grandchildren Michelle, Theresa, Ashley, Christopher, Melissa, Lindsey and Nicole; also numerous nieces and nephews. Bob grew up in Burnaby, was educated at U.B.C. and taught for 34 years in the North Vancouver School District. He was active in scouting, soccer, NorWesters Track & Field and the North Shore Optimist Club. Funeral services at St. Andrew's United Church, 10th and St. Georges, North Vancouver, Friday, October 6, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow with interment at Ocean View Cemetery, Burnaby at 3:00 p.m., Friday. SMITH - Brian Alastair, born April 28, 1940, passed into the healing presence of his Lord October 4, 2000. Brian is survived by his wife, Lynne, his children Kyle and Leslie Smith, Craig and Julia Smith, Karen and R.J. Parry and Fraser Smith, mother Phoebe Smith, sisters Barbara and Andrea Smith, brother and sister-in-law Graeme and Elizabeth Smith and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who loved him dearly. Geoff is survived by his sons, Larry and Chris; his daughter, Mary; his mother, Pat; brother, Charlie (Patti); sisters, Barb (Don), Kate (Nick), Beth (Paul); many nieces, nephews and cousins. THOMPSON - Nancy Ann Shirley, born January 11th, 1937, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 3rd, 2000. Nancy is survived by her loving children, Wendy and husband Bruce, Ken and wife Kathy, Bob and wife Nancy, sister Joyce and husband Dennis, and grandchildren Connor and Esme. Nancy's courage, strength and determination will always be remembered by those close to her. The family would like to extend its appreciation to the doctors and nurses who cared for Nancy at both George Pearson Hospital and UBC Hospital.

WEST - Norma Margaret Spencer in her 92nd year, died peacefully on Thursday, September 14, 2000 at Crofton Manor, Vancouver, British Columbia. Predeceased by her husband, Emerson (1998) and brother, Williard (Bill) M. Spencer (1983) of Rhode Island. Survived by her loving family: daughter, Barbara Gillanders; son-in-law, David (Vancouver) and grandson, Drew (New York); sister-in-law, Jean Spencer; nephews, Richard Spencer, Michael Spencer (Linda Jo); nieces, Linda Smith (Mark) and Nancy Tempest (John) of Rhode Island. Born in 1909 in Hamilton, Ontario, Norma was the only daughter of Murray and Anna Margaret Spencer. Norma spent her early years in Ontario going on to college in Wisconsin where she received a degree in Art History and Applied Design from Milwaukee Downer College. She later pursued a career in Fashion design in New York City. Married in 1938 in Pelham, New York, Norma moved to Vancouver in 1950 where she was very active in the community for many years with The Women's Auxiliary of The Vancouver General Hospital and The Community Chest. A private family service will be held at Shaughnessy Heights United Church to celebrate Norma's life and her ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden at the Church next to Em's. Her family would like to extend its grateful thanks to Dr. James Warren, all of the nurses and staff at Crofton Manor and the private care-givers from Drake Medox Health Services who cared for Norma during the past four years and particularly in the last days of her life. Their care and compassion is greatly appreciated. Flowers are gratefully declined, but anyone so wishing may make a donation to a special Bursary Fund in the Arts established in Norma's name at Crofton House School. ALLARD - Ann Valerie, of Peachland and formally of Surrey, passed away in the Kelowna General Hospital suddenly on Thursday, November 16th, 2000 at the age of 72 years. Predeceased by her husband, F. (Buzz) Allard in 1974 and brother, Bob Lamoureux in January 2000. Survived by her daughter, Carrol and son-in-law Bob; sisters, Evelyn MacAdam and Laura Dejarlais; sisters-in-law, Eunice Melton and Marie Dembek, and also her beloved pet Brandy. Interment of the cremated remains will take place in the Coquitlam City Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends who so wish may make memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Fund in memory of Mrs. Allard. ASSELSTINE - Arthur Irving (Art), born March 28, 1921 in Vegreville, Alberta. Passed away on October 18, 2000 in Port Coquitlam. Art was predeceased by his loving wife, Patricia Olive (Denham), originally from Broken Hill, Australia; also his sister Iona Mary Black from Vancouver, B.C. Sadly missed by the Black family, Sandy (brother-in-law), nieces Crinan Thomas and Katrine McKinnon and Crinan's husband Tom and two children, Cameron and Meghan. Also sadly missed by the Denham family, Joan and her sister Anne, husband Bob and family. Art served in the New Zealand Air Force while in New Zealand during WW II. CAPLE (NEE MURRAY) - Barbara. Born in Vancouver in 1913, she died peacefully on November 12, 2000. Predeceased by her husband, Dr. Harold H. Caple, infant son Harold Murray Caple and two sisters, Maidie and Jean. Survived by her daughter Elizabeth Lower (Malcolm), sons Bruce (Candy) and Chris (Jo Ellen) and many grand children, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Barbara will also be missed by her very close and dear friends of many years, including schoolmates, travelling companions and bridge group members. Over her life she was an active volunteer, giving her time and talent to the Art Gallery, Junior League, Garden Club, PTA, and other organizations. A memorial service will be held at St. Helen's Anglican Church, 4405 West 8th Avenue, in Vancouver on Monday November 20 at 2:00 pm. CHATTERTON - Elizabeth Anne (nee Scarffe) passed away peacefully on November 14, 2000. Elizabeth was born in Donegal, Ireland, on October 12, 1912, and had lived in Canada since 1953. She was a resident of Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island for 46 years, and moved to Crofton Manor in Vancouver this past summer. Elizabeth was predeceased by Bill, her beloved husband of 61 years, in 1998. She will be deeply and forever missed by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Bonnie, grandchildren Marie and Paul, and his wife Cheryl; also her cousin Ivy Crawford, Vancouver, nephew Alick Slater, in Halifax, nieces Erl Cassells in Ottawa and Sadie Craig in Aberdeen, Scotland; great nieces and nephews in Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax and Scotland. She will also be sadly missed by her loving friend Renee of Brentwood Bay. Elizabeth will be remembered by her family and many friends in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island for her caring, cheerful and sweet nature, generous hospitality and her indomitable spirit during her long struggle with rheumatoid arthritis. She touched the lives of everyone she met and her positive outlook on life shone from her. Our appreciation to the caring staff at Crofton Manor. A special thanks to the compassionate nurses on Ward 1A of U.B.C. Hospital, and to Dr. Gallagher of the Palliative Care Unit; also to Dr. Panton and Dr. MacDonald. Bill and Bonnie wish to express their deep appreciation to the family members who assisted them in providing loving care to Elizabeth during her three weeks in hospital.
