Death Notice (06/07/2000)
BALL - Jean Margaret Monica, died on Thursday, June 1, 2000 at UBC Hospital. Born in Morse, Saskatchewan in 1920 to Dr. and Mrs. A. R. Gordon, she later moved to Lloydminster with her family, including elder brothers Ronald (now deceased), Harry and younger sister Marian Berry (now of North Pender Island, BC). There she began piano study under Mossie McRae Hancock and Lyell Gustin of Saskatoon. After high school, she attended the University of Saskatchewan where she was goalkeeper for the U. of S. ladies hockey team. She graduated in Household Science in 1941, followed by post-graduate studies in dietetics at Toronto Western Hospital and Sick Children's Hospital. She joined the RCAF in August, 1943, continued work in dietetics, and served in Ontario and Quebec. In late 1945, while posted at Camp Borden as Section Officer Gordon, she married Captain Walter H. Ball, Royal Canadian Engineers. Both were released from the Services in early 1946 and began their family life in Banff, Alberta, followed by stops in Saskatoon, Ottawa and Vancouver. Along the way they were joined by Elizabeth, Gordon, Kenneth and Margaret - four wonderful people all having inherited one or more of their mother's talents. Elizabeth and husband Douglas Welch gave Jean grandchildren Marilee and Gordon along with Sally and Kenneth's children Jeanine and Christopher - now all thriving teenagers. Jean continued her great interest in the piano and in addition to her family responsibilities, she achieved an Associate Diploma from Trinity College London School. She began teaching children in her own studio in Vancouver and dozens of young people contributed to her joy of life. The University Women's Club was very important in her later life - the friendships developed in interest groups such as Les Fideles (French speaking), Hycroft Singers, and the Coach House Arts Studio were treasured always. Above all else Jean made family and social life a joy - her superb cooking, her awesome skill as a seamstress, and her love of travel were much admired. She especially enjoyed folk dancing and ballroom dancing. Jean requested that there be no funeral and that she be cremated. She asked that a celebration be arranged at Hycroft, the University Women's Club. It will take place on Monday, June 12 in the afternoon so that family and friends can join for talk and music. Jean and her family much appreciated the care and attention given to her by so many kind people in and around Ward 2A at the UBC Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Vancouver Recital Society, a professional theatre company or school or the Canadian Music Centre.
