Survived by his wife of 59 years Irene; and family Arlone (Dave), Adele (Lou), Bruce (Dawn); grandchildren Shawna, Angela (George), Jeff, Shane (Shelly); great-grandchildren Morgan, Milo, Seth, Alexander; also survived by sisters Elvie and Eleanor; brother Jack and cousin Bill. Ted retired in 1973 after 36 years with the Vancouver Police Department and served overseas during WW II with the Regina Rifles. VANDERWOOD - Shirley In her home at the side of her husband our dear wife, mother, and grandmother, Shirley passed away on 3 June, 2000, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She is much loved by her husband Paul; her son Mark, with Ingrid, and their sons Jacob and Samuel; her son David, with Janice, and their daughter Claire; her daughter Denise with Larry and sons Nathan and Sean; and her mother Elizabeth. Shirley leaves a brother Leslie in Edmonton and other loving relatives in Southern Alberta. Shirley Elizabeth Rissling was born on February 27, 1946, in the Leader, SK, hospital and spent her pre-school years in the small prairie town of Prelate, SK. Her family moved to Medicine Hat, AB., where she received her education In 1966 she married Paul in Kelowna and moved to Ladner early in 1970. Shirley had a deep love for her family with a huge place in her heart for her grandchildren. She enjoyed sailing 'Catspaw' in the Gulf Island and on numerous vacations to Desolation Sound, Barkley Sound, and north along the B.C. coast. Shirley had a passion for life and had strong convictions and the highest integrity and as a Pisces with a love of fishing, Shirley filled her house with things piscine. After her children gained independence Shirley began her career with bookkeeping and in her 40's enrolled in the CGA program, proudly graduating as an accountant in 1998. She was the President of Delta Toastmasters when struck by her illness. The family wishes to thank Dr's Kason, Fishman, Yun, Scudamore, and many other dedicated health care staff for their caring support. The memorial service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church at 4755 Arthur Drive in Delta (Ladner) on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at 4 p.m. Her family will be pleased to have you visit their home between 7 and 10 p.m. on the same day. In lieu of flowers Shirley requested that her friends support an activity to help the children of our world.

VENNELS - William Douglas (Bill) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a dear husband, father, son, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law and friend on May 28th, 2000 in Honolulu, Hawaii at the age of 47. Predeceased by his son Courtney, December 2nd, 1997 and his dad George Vennels, February 11th, 1987. He leaves to mourn his loving wife and best friend of 23 years, Rhonda (Keddle), daughters, Breanne and Caitlin, his mother Arlene (McLaughlin) and sister, Cathy Vennels of Winnipeg, Manitoba, mother-in-law Doris Keddle, brothers-in-law, Gary (Jan) Keddle and David Keddle, sister-in-law, Marion (John) Cully all of Victoria, B.C., and numerous other family members and friends in Canada and the United States. Bill was born December 1st, 1952 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After graduating from Kelvin High School, he continued his education in Rochester, New York. Following in his grandfather and father's footsteps, he began his career in the newspaper industry at the Daily Times and Colonist in Victoria, B.C. in 1977. It was there that he met his future wife Rhonda when he was recruited to coach the Classified girls baseball team. His career path took him to several newspapers across Canada; the Winnipeg Free Press, the Winnipeg Sun, the Regina Leader Post, a return to the Victoria Times Colonist, the [Vancouver Sun] and Province and most recently the Honolulu Star and the Honolulu Advertiser as a Production Director. During his 23 years in the newspaper industry he touched many lives with his sense of fair play, his easy going manner and outstanding work ethic. If anyone had a problem, he was always there to listen and help out, "I'll take care of it", he'd say. He was highly respected and will be sadly missed by all his co-workers. Bill will always be remembered for his quirky sense of humour, his loving heart and gentle ways and for the privileged few; his hilarious Donald Duck imitations. His proudest accomplishment was his children, he was a terrific father who adored his beautiful girls and was so very proud of them. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be placed next to his son Courtney at Royal Oak Cemetery in Victoria, B.C. An informal gathering of his family and friends to celebrate Bill's life will be held at the family home in Vancouver on June 10th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a Memorial Service will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba at a later date. In lieu of flowers a Trust Fund for Breanne and Caitlin Vennels will be set up at the Royal Bank, donations will be accepted at any branch across Canada.

Leek and the daughter of Marion Leek Sinclair both of whom are deceased. She is survived by her sister Jeanne Sinclair and her twin brother Donn Sinclair. SING - Jim (James Lyonel), born 26 June, 1926 in Merritt, B.C., died peacefully at home in Vancouver on October 3, 2000. Jim will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Marjorie, sons, Jim Jr. (Rosalie) and Tony (Darlene), grandchildren Toni, Warren, Crystal, and Scott, brother Ike (Anme) in Cawston, B.C., sisters Velma, Irene, May and Vivian, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Predeceased by brothers George (Betty) and Ernie (Barbara). Jim was a great jazz fan; he loved fishing, travelling (especially with his family), and Monday night football. He was known to all as a generous man. A memorial service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services, 602 Kingsway, Vancouver on Tuesday, October 17th, 2000 at 2:30 p.m. Jim was a supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society and the Food Bank. SIVERTZ - Bent Gestur, O.B.E., B.A. Born August 11, 1905: Victoria, B.C. Died October 4, 2000: Mayne Island, B.C. Bent Gestur Sivertz died peacefully at home at Deacon Vale Farm on Mayne Island with members of his family gathered round. His was a remarkable life as a seaman, navigator, teacher and statesman in the Canadian Arctic. His work spanned almost a century, starting as a seaman and then Ship's Officer in the Merchant Marine where he gained his love of the sea. He taught elementary School and high school in British Columbia and then was recruited to establish a school of navigation for the Navy in World War II. He left the Navy as Lieutenant Commander in 1946, having been awarded the O.B.E. He went on to a long and distinguished career for the Federal Government, first in External Affairs and then in Internal Affairs. He was the first Commissioner of the North-West Territories and retired from public life in 1966. After formal retirement he became very busy with further world travels with his wife Barbara, built their house, "Tabitha," on his property at his beloved Dorcas Point and began his next career as a writer and family historian. He has written a biography of both of his Icelandic parents and two years before his death he thankfully completed his own autobiography. In January 2000 he moved to live with extended family at Deacon Vale Farm, Mayne Island. He worked with dedication and enthusiasm at his chosen outdoor projects and was constant in his grace and humour. He leaves a legacy of his work, his intellectual clarity and honesty, his abiding interest and warmth in all friends and family and his example of courage and integrity in all areas of life. His wife Barbara predeceased him on December 10th, 1995. He is survived by eight nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. A memorial service will be held in Victoria on a date yet to be confirmed.

SPEAR - Stuart George, of South Surrey, B.C. passed away suddenly in Vancouver, B.C., on October 4, 2000, age 66 years. Stuart is survived by and sadly missed by his devoted wife, Brenda; loving children, Katherine (Glenn) and Andrew, as well as Janet (Dan), Stuart (Terri) and Elizabeth (David); grandchildren, Danielle, Michael, Brennan, Carter, Ross and Richard, and by his side his little pal, Chester. Stuart was a founding member and Past President of the Arbutus Club and the Past President of the Frozen Food Association. STANELY - Alice Everina (nee Leitch) died September 16th at 87 years young (1912-2000). She was born in Merritt, B.C., the 2nd child of Bess and Jack Leitch. With her 9 brothers and sisters she grew up on the Kamloops hills. Our mother was loving, bright and feisty. She passionately loved her family, the wilderness, hiking, camping and singing. She had a great love of learning and passed this onto her children and grandchildren. Alice was an active member of the Kamloops Outdoor Club where she met Vern Stanley, her husband (for 51 years). They lived in Kamloops, New Westminster and Revelstoke. She was wonderfully hospitable and compassionate, you were always welcomed, often with a cup of tea. Alice is survived by her 3 daughters, Joy, Anne and Val; her sons-in-law, Reg and Gary; 6 grandchildren whom she loved and was very proud of Jennifer, Erin, Kate, Georgia, Jodi and Nathan; her brother, sisters, cousins and many nieces and nephews. How blessed we were to have her in our lives. A memorial service will be held at Kamloops United Church, 421 St. Paul's, Kamloops, B.C. at 2:30 pm on Saturday, November 11th. She had requested that donations be sent to B.C. Children's Hospital in lieu of flowers. We hold her close within our hearts and there she will remain, to walk with us throughout our lives until we meet again.
