JONES - Barbara Dorothy. Born Vancouver, November 26, 1924. Died October 5, 1999 at her home in Vernon after a short illness. Animals were Barbara's passion, her personal menagerie was legendary, a kinkajou, skunk, and a tortoise were among her favorites. Varying numbers of cats and dogs found themselves fortunate to find a home with her. Barbara owned "Cats Carousel" for many years, and was active in numerous animal organizations. She will be missed by family and friends (and their owners!) No service at her request. Those wishing to do so may make donations to the West Vancouver branch of the SPCA in her memory.
KOZICKI - Nicholas. Born December 29, 1920 in Cooks Creek, Manitoba. Passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at Lions Gate Hospital on October 7, 1999 after a courageous struggle with cancer. Nicholas will be remembered by his loving family; Karen Campbell (Earl), Mary Lou Willows (Richard Wyllie), Karinna James (Tom), Laurie Kozicki and his two treasured granddaughters, Velvet Campbell and Casey James. He will also be held in the hearts of his brother and sisters, Harry, Anne and Mary and brother-in-law Johnny. His cousin, Steve Prokopenko, who was like a younger brother to him, spent memorable time with him during the past year, reminiscing about their childhood and all the good times they had. He missed all his family in Ontario and Manitoba, including his cousins, nieces and nephews, and had wanted to visit them before he passed away. Unfortunately, he wasn't well enough to do so. A celebration of Nicholas's life will be held in West Vancouver on Monday, October 25, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. Please call Karinna at 925-9287 for the location of the service. MARTON - George. Born in Budapest, Hungary, May 11, 1923. Passed away after a lengthy illness October 9, 1999 at home. DAVIS - Bertha (formerly Wilson). Born in North Vancouver. Passed away suddenly on October 11, 1999 at the age of 88. Survived by her loving family, sister Eve; daughters Marge (Ken), Sue; and son John (Barbara); granddaughters Karen (Mark), Kathy (Steve), Nancy (Darren); great-grandchildren Tyler, Vanessa, Dayna, Andrew, Kyle and Justin; plus many nieces and nephews. FISHER - Betty Baptiste (Johnston), 82, Died October 6, 1999 at Ever-green Extended Care at Lions Gate Hospital. She was born in Rockferry, England and raised in Calgary. Betty taught school in rural Alberta, attended University of Alberta and was a member of the Pi Phi's. She married Ralph Fisher (deceased) also of Calgary and raised 3 children in Powell River. Lizanne (North Vancouver), John (Comox), and Gina (Toronto). Her sister Doreen lives in Florida and brother Alan in West Vancouver. She was predeceased by brothers Cooper and Bill. For the past 20 years Betty lived in North Vancouver. Her health was declining for some time and she died peacefully in the presence of her eldest daughter. She will be remembered for her love of the English Language, animated storytelling, flair for the dramatic and spunky nature. John was born in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan on February 3, 1921. His family moved to Winnipeg where he spent his boy-hood years and early married life. In 1958 John and Marion moved to West Vancouver where they spent the remainder of their years. Mourning the loss of their father are daughters, Beverley Candlish (Toronto), Conny Rosen (Burnaby), Cheryl Jacobs (Abbotsford); son Jack Sigurdson (Prince Rupert); his sisters Pauline Newcomb, Gwen Kinzie and Pat Graham; along with 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. John will be sadly missed by his partner of 25 years and best friend Arvid Much, along with all his golfing cronies from the Capilano Golf and Country Club and the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. John was predeceased by his wife Marion in April 1998, and his son Raymond in May 1999. He was looking forward to meeting them again in heaven. John touched the lives of everyone he met with his generosity, quick wit and dry sense of humor. He was respected and loved by so many. WITZEL - Dana Anne, daughter of Karen and Bob, sister of Jason and Scott, died suddenly in an avalanche in the Bolivian Andes on Saturday, September 25, 1999. Dana, a graduate of West Vancouver High School lived her life with zest and enthusiasm and will be missed by those she touched. ARMSTRONG - Lillian Annie (nee Candlish). Died September 30, 1999. Born on a homestead in Caron, near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in October 1911. Married her beloved husband Thomas W. Armstrong in Moose Jaw and the couple moved to North Vancouver about 1945, and started Tommy's Taxi which operated at 138 West 15th St and later amalgamated to become North Shore Taxi. She was predeceased by her husband, sister Evelyn, brothers Frank and Albert, sister-in-law Viola, and special friend Cora. Survived by sister Ruth, sister-in-law Nathalie, and many nieces and nephews - the Armstrongs, the Candlishes, the McElwees, the Masons, and others across Canada. Lil loved her days as Thunderbird Lanes Ladies bowling "champ" where she so enjoyed being around her many neighbors and friends at her residence at 148 W.16th. The family would like to thank Drs. Cindy Clark and Alison Clark, and those special nurses in the palliative care ward at Lions Gate Hospital for their kind attention.
