Gilmore, J. Royal (Roy)
John Royal (Roy) Gilmore, passed away peacefully on August 27th, 2006 at the Creston Valley Hospital after a lengthy illness. Roy was born in Regina, SK on August 31st, 1919, receiving his education in Regina and following graduation from high school, attended Scott Collegiate. He and his parents, Herb and Lida Gilmore moved to Edgewater, B.C. in 1937 and from raw land built a farm. Roy joined the army in September 1940 and was placed in the Canadian Forestry Corp., 18th Company. He spent his army life driving transport vehicles, serving in Scotland, France, Belgium and Germany. He was discharged in September 1945. As his parents had sold the farm at Edgewater and moved to Creston, Roy returned there. He quickly got a job at the school district driving school bus and carpentry work. He had purchased fourteen acres of orchard with two acres of it through the Veterans Land Act on which the house and out buldings were situated. He had met his future wife, Marjorie Kanester and they were married on December 5th, 1946. In 1951, his full time work at the school district kept him busy, so he gave up the 12 acres of orchard and kept the two acres and home.
Roy and Margorie welcomed their son Wayne in September 1952. In 1960, he sold one and one-half acres and on the remaining one half acre built their new home, where they remained. His son and wife Betty now live there.
Roy and Marjorie did a lot of traveling and Rving, visiting such places as England, Scotland, France, Spain, Scandanavian countries, and several in Asia, Hawaii, Cozumel and USA.
Roy took early retirement in 1983 after thirty seven years and following bypass surgery in 1981. At retirement he had been superintendent of maintenance for the very large school district for several years. He loved his time driving school bus and his former riders remember him fondly, even if some had to walk home for misbehaving.
Roy was generous with his volunteer hours. He spent years on committees and helping his wife at the Creston & District Credit Union, which she managed for twenty-four years. He was parade marshall for the Blossom Festival for a few years, gave time to the Shrine Caravans to Spokane Shrine Hospital, gathering fruit and vegetables and served on the New Horzions Seniors Society Board of Directors until illness made it difficult.
Roy loved to golf, dance, play cards and spend time with his family and friends.
Roy will be dearly missed by his loving wife and best friend for nearly sixty years, Marjorie, son Wayne ( Betty ) Gilmore, one grandson Jason Royal Gilmore of Vancouver, BC; Betty’s children Shannon and Craig Peterson of the USA and Alberta, who gave him three step grandsons, Brison, Brandon and Kelsey.
The Memorial Service was held on Roy’s 87th birthday at the Trinity United Church, Creston, B.C. with Canon Randy Wood officiating. The Royal Canadian Legion Veteran Tribute took place and the Masonic and Shrine Lodges formed an honour guard.
Thank you - Special thanks to the nurses, doctors, and therapists who cared for Roy over the past months. He appreciated you all. Thanks to Dennis and Bob at the G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel. Your assistance was so caring and helpful. We are lucky to have you in our valley.
Thanks to friends for the many flowers, cards, phone calls etc. Finally thanks to our loving family, sisters and spouses, brother, nieces and nephews. Your support made our loss so much easier.
