Mantle, Nina
Nina Dorothy Mantle (nee Akehurst) passed away on May 29, 2009 in Cranbrook Regional Hospital from pneumonia and complications of Alzheimers disease.
Nina was born in LeRoss, SK on May 22, 1918 to parents Dorothy and John Akehurst. She attended high school in Saskatoon and later studied briefly at the U of S before obtaining work as a secretary. She met John in a 15-cent store in 1939 when he was a young Engineering student.
John and Nina were married on June 9, 1942. Both worked as part of air support in Moncton, NB, during World War II. John eventually retired as a Wing Commander in the RCAF reserve.
Nina spent most of her life as a homemaker and support for her husband as he built a career as a teacher and administrator in his chosen field at the U of S and U of R. She and John were for many years active gardeners, tennis players, ice skaters, skiers, curlers, square dancers, campers and world travelers. They spent extended periods of time on two working holidays in Australia, where Nina’s habit of speaking to anyone was very helpful in keeping them ‘on course’.
When she was about 50 Nina decided to become a painter. Her age did not deter her from taking classes to learn this new skill. She eventually became quite good, working in both water colors and oils, winning several awards for works she entered in regional competitions. Nina was on the Artists Guild in Creston for nearly 20 years. She was also on the altar guild of the local Anglican church and served for several years on the hospital auxiliary.
Eight years ago she and John moved to Cranbrook, where they, until recently, were known as ‘the dancing couple’ at Joseph Creek Village. They kept fit by taking daily walks, where Nina’s good eyesight was helpful to John’s, which was failing.
Nina will be sorely missed by her husband John, brother Herb, sons Brian and Greg, five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Nina will be remembered by many for her warmth and good humor.
Friends wishing to make a memorial contribution in memory of Nina, may do so to the Alzheimer Society of B.C., 828 West 8th Ave, Vancouver, B.C. V5Z 1E2.
