Irvine, Lela

Lela Doris Irvine passed away after a ten-month battle with cancer on September 18, 2010 in Creston, BC at the age of 78 years.

Lela was born on August 11, 1932 to parents Nellie and Eugene Roope in Lethbridge, AB. She married Bill Irvine in 1954 and they had three children. Lela served as Mayor of the Town of Creston from 1985 to 1999. Lela was the recipient of many awards including the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award, The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship, and an Honourary Associates of Art Degree from College of the Rockies. She was chairperson, director and member of numerous boards and committees locally and provincially Lela’s tireless dedication, drive and energy enriched Creston and everyone who knew her. In her spare time, Lela was a part of the Eastern Star and helped to create and maintain handi-capable housing.

Lela was predeceased by her brother, Ernest and her mother Mary Ellen Roope.

She will be dearly missed by her loving husband Bill, sons Bill and Scott, daughter Susan, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters Aleen and Margaret and her brother Leroy.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on Thursday September 23, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Church with Lorraine Doeleman officiating. Interment of Ashes followed the service at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC.

Alvina Fellman
Aug 19, 1923 – January 6, 2011

Alvina Louise Fellman passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord on Thursday, Jan 6, 2011 at the age of 87 years. Born on August 19, 1923 in Hope, North Dakota to Ole & Severina Larson, she was the youngest of five boys and four girls. At the age of 3 the family moved to Saskatchewan where her father purchased a quarter section of land. It was there near Spalding they raised their family. She received her education at Lake Edward, a one room country school. There she met her future husband Vernon Fellman who she married on April 6, 1942 and raised six children, three girls and three boys.

In 1957 Vern & Alvina moved their family to Creston, BC where they lived out the remainder of their lives. While in Creston she was active in the Pentecostal church, teaching Sunday School. She started the Wee College program in 1980 for 4 & 5 yr olds. She taught for 14 years and then continued on as director. She also served as the Women’s Ministries president for several years.

She is remembered and cherished by her 6 children, Elaine Vader of Sherwood Park, AB, Sylvia (George) Williams of Port Alberni, BC, Doug (Janet) Fellman of Castlegar, BC, Orlie (Monica) Fellman and Ellwood (Darlene) Fellman of Osoyoos, BC, and Starla (Lindy) Ek of Creston, BC; Eleven Grandchildren, Shane (Janet) Vader of Sherwood Park, AB, Trevor (Paula) Fellman of Creston, BC, Andrew Fellman of Lethbridge, AB, Susan Fellman (mother of Trevor & Andrew) of Creston BC, Ryan (Deanna) Vader of Edmonton, AB, Brooke (Clay) Molitwenik and Lane Fellman of Castlegar, BC, Tanya Williams of Port Alberni, BC, Lara Williams of Tofino, BC, Jalene Ek and Amber Ek of Calgary, AB, Jacey Fellman of Lethbridge AB, Val Fellman (mother of Jacey) Lethbridge, AB. She also leaves ten great-grandchildren, Korlan & Kaylee Vader, Shayla Leacock, Kaden Fellman, Sydney & Keiya Fellman and Jordan, Megan, Charlie & Brooke Vader; two sisters Lillian Hetland of Watson, SK and Violet (Leslie) Formo of Naicam, SK.

Alvina was predeceased by her husband Vern on February 20, 2010. Also predeceasing her are her parents Ole & Severina Larson, brothers Clarence, Conrad, Sydney, Morris & Melvin, and her sister Selma.

A celebration of her life will take place on Friday, January 14, 2011 at Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church, 2408 Cedar Street, Creston BC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Global Christian Centre Ministries, c/o Rev. K.H. Pennoyer, P.O. Box 1108, Grand Forks, BC, V0H 1H0.

Robert Merle Cannon
May 24th, 1934 – November 24th, 2010

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Cannon. He passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB as a result of Cushings Disease.

Bob was born in Pamona, California. During his time in the States, Bob received his education, was married to his first wife and was blessed with two sons, Todd and Curt. During the early 60’s he relocated to Canada where he purchased a cattle ranch out of Houston, BC. In 1971 he met the love of his life, Pat Johnson, whom he married in Boswell, after a short courtship. After their marriage they had two children, Sheri and Cory, whom he was very close with.

Bob worked for the department of highways for a few years and then worked for Fording Coal in Elkford, BC, until his retirement in 1999.

Bob’s hobbies were fishing, hunting, and bowling. After retirement he took up scroll sawing and fine woodworking. Bob was always willing to lend a helping hand, and was a great husband, dad and grandpa. He loved his family dearly and lived his life being supportive and a great mentor.

Bob was predeceased by his parents Mary and Merle Cannon and his much loved son Todd (from a previous marriage).

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Pat; daughter Sheri (Trevor) Wise of Calgary, AB; sons Cory (Amanda) Cannon of Creston, BC and Curt (Steffie) Cannon of Jackson Hole, Wyoming; five grand children: Emma, Brice and Sofia Cannon of Creston and Trenton and Cameron Wise of Calgary, AB; two sisters, Lois Cannon of Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Doris Aki of Placerville, California; brother Lester Cannon of Placerville, California along with many more relatives and friends whom he loved dearly.

A Celebration of Life Service to be held at a later date.

Weisbrodt, Josephine (Jo)

Josephine Victoria Weisbrodt (ne Tootkevick) – May 23, 1924 – January 11, 2011

Josephine (Jo) Weisbrodt passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on January 11, 2011 following a lengthy illness. Jo was born in Quapelle, Saskatchewan and attended school in Regina, Saskatchewan.

During WW 11 she worked in aircraft manufacturing. Jo married Walter (Wally) Weisbrodt in Regina in 1947. They moved to Calgary in 1951 and retired to Creston in 1987. Jo attended and served at Creston Baptist Church until failing health prevented her from attending. She was predeceased by six siblings.

Jo is survived by her loving husband Wally, 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

A service for Jo will be held at Creston Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 11:00 am with Pastor Brian Atmore officiating. Interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC.

Greta Svea Wachter

It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Greta Wachter on Sunday, January 9, 2011 in Creston.

Greta was born December 20, 1924 at Overtornea, Sweden, the third of ten children born to Tor and Svea Tuovila.

Immigrating to Canada in 1929, the family homesteaded in Spring Park, Alberta before moving to Sharps Lake in the Cariboo and then to Kelowna. It was in Kelowna where Greta met her future husband, Louie. They were married 2 years later in Kelowna and began their married life at the H.B. Mine near Salmo. They moved to Riondel in 1953 where they raised their 4 children. After Riondel, they moved to Kimberley until retiring to Creston in 1981. Retirement enabled them to travel extensively and enjoy their yard and garden.

Greta was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was noted for being a fabulous cook and gardener. She loved to dance and go camping and fishing. She had many hobbies and activities as she loved to keep busy. She enjoyed a good joke and had a contagious gigglethat will be remembered by all.

Greta was predeceased by her parents, Tor and Svea, sisters Stina, Ruth and Alice, and brothers Lars, Jim, Carl and Bud, daughter Dorothy Dilling and son-in-law Bruce Anderson.

She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 61 years, Louie, her daughter Margaret (Roger) Corner and children Bryce, Tracey , Scott (Lisa), daughter Joan and children Christine Anderson, Valerie (Yari) Nielsen and Sarah (Kevin) Serl, son-in-law Stan Dilling and children Dana (Shawn) Greene, Kimberley (Jay) Ingham and Shane and her son Raymond (Peggy) and children Arron and Laura (Brian) Nelson. She leaves great-grandchildren Madison and Nicolas Hubbard, Erik and Annika Nielsen, Samuel and Brooklyn Corner, Karli and Emma Ingham, Jaxon and Dylan Greene, Weston Serl and Isaac Nelson and her two sisters Mary and Val.

Meunier, Alfred

Alfred L. ( Al ) Meunier passed away peacefully at the Creston Valley Hospital on December 29th, 2010 at the age of 79 years. Al was born to Marie and Henry Meunier at Gadsby, Alberta on January 16th, 1931.

Al married Bernice Engerdahl on October 22, 1955 at Cold Lake, Alberta. He farmed around Minburn and Vegreville, Alberta for 39 years and spent numerous winters surveying in northern Alberta and British Columbia. Bernice and Al retired to Creston in 1996 and he continued to enjoy fishing and hunting. He loved to play the piano and violin with his children and grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents Marie and Henry Meunier. Al will be dearly missed by his loving wife Bernice of 55 years, five children Sharon (Gordon) Bruce of Barrhead Ab; Kathy (Brian) Baltis of Courtenay, B.C; Kerry (Linda) of Whitecourt, Ab; Dwight (Linda) of Lloydminster, Ab; Joann ( Moh) of Calgary, Ab., 11 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren and one brother Gordon (Darlene) of Mannville.

Cremation to take place with a Celebration Of Life Service to be held at a later date. Notices will be posted and can be viewed at gfofuneral@shaw.ca
