“Don’t freak out - I’m fine!”
Stadnyk, Stan Saturday, 10 Nov 2007
Vernon, BC
We are saddened to announce that Stan (Mural) Stadnyk passed away on November 10, 2007 at the age of 90.
Stan is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Norma and his sister Alice Pierce of Miami, Florida. Stan was pre-deceased by his brother, Ted and sister, Elizabeth. He also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews, family and friends.
Stan was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 15, 1917, and then lived in Dufrost and then on the family farm in St. Pierre. He worked on the farm alongside his father and brother. But he had adventure in his heart.
In 1943, Stan enlisted in the army in Vernon and took basic artillery and military provost training. In October 1944 Stan was on leave in Manitoba and was very ill and did not make it overseas to Italy. Stan was shipped to Camp Borden, near Barrie, Ontario and in the summer of 1944, met Norma Nicholson. It was five years later that they married in Vancouver, B.C. Here Stan worked for Canada Packers and dreamed of going back to Vernon. Stan and Norma worked together as a team at their fishing lodge at Pinaus Lake, near Falkland. This was hard work, with long hours, but this was “God’s Country” to Stan. He loved everything about those four lakes. Stan was an outdoorman and a conservationist and was passionate about fishing and hunting. There are many young people who caught their first fish at his camp and would remember Stan’s excitement for them. Stan was President of the Falkland Fish and Game Club for six years and was a life member of the club. He was also a longtime member of the B.C. Motel and Resort Association. He was a member of the Falkland Chamber of Commerce, and also the Vernon Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Highway 97 Mexico to Anchorage, Alaska Association.
Stan and Norma operated the resort from 1952 until 1985, and then retired to Vernon. He and Norma kept active with gardening and traveling. They kept in touch with all their cousins, nephews, nieces and other family. Stan and Norma were a team and in later years when Norma became ill, he looked after her with loving care. Stan kept up with his hunting, fishing and yard work right up until June 8th of this year.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Polson (N) Extended Care Facility, who treated Stan with compassion and dignity. They were so caring with family contacts and brought Norma and Stan together one last time. We would also like to thank Stan’s very dear friends, George and Stella Carter, for their care and support for Stan in these last few months.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 17, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, with interment following in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, 202 – 3402 – 27th Avenue, Vernon, V1T 1S1.
