Jarvis, Floyd D. Monday, 19 Nov 2007
Courtenay, BC
1914 - 2007
Floyd passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, of leukemia, at the age of 93. He is survived by his sons Terry (Gloria) and Dale (Marilyn), dearest companion Doreen Laughy of Hinton, Alberta and her family, 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Floyd was born in Hardisty, Alberta, where his parents, Charley and Suzie, homesteaded after arriving from Oklahoma in a covered wagon, circa 1908. After his service in the Second World War, Floyd and his family migrated to the Comox Valley, where he worked as a fueler and driver at Canadian Forces Base Comox. He was proud of his many driving awards won throughout his career, having never had an accident, winning rodeos time and again.
He spent many happy hours fishing the ocean and lakes in the area, often staying at the Kitty Coleman campground. In later years he enjoyed crib and bridge at the Filberg Seniors Centre in Courtenay. Floyd was bright and spry and able to stay in his own home until near the end of his life. He worked happily in his yard, tending to veggies, berries, fruit trees and flowers, always willing to share the bounty.
The family would like to express deep and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Musgrave for his compassionate care during the years, especially during his final days.
Memorial Tea will be held at the home of Dale and Marilyn Jarvis, 1425 Griffin Drive, on Saturday, November 24, 2007 from 2-4 pm. Goddard, Gerald Charles Monday, 19 Nov 2007
Courtenay, BC
We are so sad to announce the death of our Gerry. Gerald Charles Goddard, recently of East Courtenay and formerly a long-time resident of Denman Island, passed away November 19th in Victoria at the age of 64 after suffering a sudden aortic dissection followed by a fatal stroke.
Having retired several years ago from BC Ferries, Gerry’s lifework was his creative intellectual involvement in the fields of transpersonal theory and psychological/archetypal astrology. Many of his articles in both his fields of interest have appeared in various on-line and hard copy journals and anthologies His formal academic background was in Philosophy and he also held a degree in Library Science. Gerry’s book Transpersonal Theory & the Astrological Mandala: An Evolutionary Model, on which he had been working for the past 13 years, had been released on the internet, the day before he was struck down. Since the nature of synchronicity was intrinsic to his areas of study, the appearance of his book on-line followed so soon by his demise contributes a mysterious poetry and grace to the tragic event of his death.
Primarily a man of ideas, he was a metaphysician, consultant astrologer, writer, teacher and scholar, who also possessed a quiet love of the beauties of nature, music and art. Gerry had a kind and gentle temperament, except concerning political matters, where his impassioned rants were well-known and enjoyed by many.
Gerry loved his blended/extended family and they loved him: his life partner Roberta DeDoming, his sons Ivan Goddard & Barton Goddard (and his partner Francesca Barker); his stepson Rama DeDoming (and his partner Allison Simpson), his stepdaughter Eva DeDoming & her husband Calvin Wong; his sister and brother-in-law Ann and Pete Kloosterboer, their children & grandchildren; his Uncle Jock, his cousins Phil and Craig and their families. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren: grandson Jacob Kosh and step-grandchildren, Simon Wong and Skyla MacVittie DeDoming (and her mother, Susan MacVittie).
His family extends its gratitude to the people of Campbell River at London Drugs, the ambulance crew there, the staff at the Campbell River Hospital, the Medi-Vac helicopter crew, and the wonderful doctors, nurses, technicians, social workers and support staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital’s CVU Unit. Everyone was so kind to Gerry and his family as they were trying so hard to save his life.
Gerry will be missed by family, dear friends, ex-workmates and colleagues. A celebration of his life will take place at the Denman Community Hall, Saturday, Dec. 8, 11 am to 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please keep him in mind and take that extra moment to be grateful for the blessings in your own life.
