Tekla is survived by her loving husband of 67 years John, and many nieces, nephews and cousins in Ukraine. She was predeceased by her parents, 2 sisters, an infant son, and a special friend and neighbor Peter Semchyshyn.

Tekla was born on March 6, 1922 in Markopil, Ukraine. She emigrated to Canada on June 24, 1978. Shortly afterwards she became a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption, a member of the church choir and a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League. She took great joy and pride in being the church cantor, with the assistance of the talented voice of Sonja Bereza.

Tekla’s passion was her faith and music. She and her husband freely devoted many hours in volunteer work for the church, cleaning, washing the alter cloths and making communion bread. Music was another love and talent as she led the church choir, sung at mass, attended other church services (St Claude Church), attended personal care homes, visited friends and many funerals, all with song.

Tekla was a loving, caring and generous person. She found happiness in helping out her families in Ukraine with much generosity. She took pride in her home, garden and friends, especially her dearest friend and neighbor Zennia & Peter Semchysyn who were her adopted Canadian family.

Tekla, as a member of the ladies league, assisted in catering events, she & Nellie Jakymiczko cooked for many weddings, smorgs and social events. Tekla’s baking was shared by others, many received a bag of perogies for a helping hand. She was renowned for her “Korovai”, traditional wedding bread.

Tekla was a natural when I came to caring for people. She nursed John’s parents until their passing, and presently continued nursing in the care of her husband.

The community of the church, family and friends share in the loss of a wife, aunt and friend.

Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption, or a charity of your choice.
