Margaret Eleanor McDonald
Peacefully on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at the Lions Prairie Manor, Margaret McDonald of Portage la Prairie, beloved wife of Orval McDonald passed away at the age of 82 years.
A Memorial service will be held at a later date
Margaret was born November 14, 1923 at Hamiota, Manitoba where she was raised.
In 1942 she joined the Armed Forces and played the Clarinet in the Army and served in several communities over seas.
After her discharge in February of 1946 she married Orval McDonald and they resided in Dawson Creek, B.C.
In the mid 1950’s they moved back to Manitoba to farm the McDonald farm.
They farmed north of Portage until they retired to live in Portage in the mid 1980’s.
Margaret was a member of the A.N.A.F. Auxiliary.
She loved to knit, sew and garden, but her greatest loves were her children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by her parents, three brother; Cliff, Russ and Earl.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband of 60 years; Orval, three daughter; Bev (Don) Zalusky of Portage, Betty (George) Jeninga of Kelowna, BC, Phyllis (Steve) Piontkowski of Portage, seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Also surviving is one brother; Keith Runchey of Saskatoon, two sisters-in-law; Hazel Runchey of Winnipeg, Audrey McDougall of Canora, SK, many nieces and nephews.

Calvert Charlton Miller
Clive and Virginia Miller sadly announce the passing of their son, Calvert, on June 1, 2004 in Singapore.
Calvert fought a lengthy and courageous battle against cancer with the strong and unwavering support of his beloved wife, Yvonne.
Calvert was born in Vancouver on January 26, 1958, and moved with his family to Portage la Prairie in 1962.
He was always an excellent student; receiving in his senior year at Portage Collegiate Institute several awards, including the Governor-Generals Medal and acting as class valedictorian.
Calvert was a strong sportsman through his school years, particularly enjoying football and hockey at the Junior "B" level.
In 1976 he commenced studies at Dalhousie University, graduating in 1981 with a Bachelors degree in Law.
After 4 years of law practice with Davis and Co. in Vancouver, Calvert pursued a Masters in Law at Cambridge University in England.
While at Cambridge he met Yvonne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Lewis of Gloucestershire. Calvert and Yvonne married in England in July of 1990.
Calvert and Yvonne have been citizens of the world, living and working in Tokyo, London and most recently in Singapore with Cal as a partner in the law firm of Shearman and Sterling.
Calvert had many interests including travel, sports activities, reading and astronomy, but above all he was a devoted and doting father to his and Yvonne’s four beautiful children, Alexandra, Charles, Alice and James.
There was nothing he loved more than to be playing with his children.
Calvert is survived by his wife, Yvonne, children; Alexandra, Charles, Alice and James, as well as his parents; Virginia and Clive, two brothers; Drew and Ross and a sister; Leigh.
"May god watch over him on his journey and bless and sustain his beloved family".
Funeral service was held at St. Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on Saturday, June 12, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. with the Right Reverend Bishop Patrick Lee officiating and the Reverend Norman Collier assisting.
Leigh Miller did a reading and Gregory Nash, Richard Price and Ross Miller gave eulogies.
The Hymn selections were "Praise My Soul" and "Those Hearts That We Have Treasured" with Audrey MacFarlane presiding at the organ.
The recessional CD selection was "Have I Told You Lately".
Pallbearers were Mesrss: Drew Miller, Ross Miller, Gregory Nash, Kelly Collett, Stephen Sanford and Tim Muirhead.
The service terminated at the church and was followed by cremation.

Donald Edward Lamont
On Wednesday, June 02, 2004 at the Lions Prairie Manor, Donald Edward Lamont of Portage la Prairie, beloved Husband of the late Jean Lamont passed away at the age 86 years.
Donald was born on the family farm at Lauder, MB. on April 10, 1918 to John and Nellie Lamont.
He received his education in Lauder. In 1934 he moved with his family to a farm north of Bagot.
Four years later they moved to a farm south of Bagot.
In 1952, Don married Jean Milne and made the family farm their own.
They raised three daughters and remained on the farm until 2001 when they moved to the Oddfellows Towers in Portage la Prairie.
After the death of his wife in February of this year Don moved to the Lions Prairie Manor where he resided until his passing.
Don dedicated his life to farming and would spend countless hours checking the crops.
He was an active member for over 50 years with the Portage I.O.O.F. holding numerous positions.
He was an active member of the 4-H beef club with his daughters, and also a member of the Rossendale United Church. Don enjoyed participating in curling and bowling.
Predeceased by his parents, wife Jean, brothers Murray and Stewart, sisters Margaret Lamont and Helen Boak.
He leaves to mourn his passing his three daughters Margaret James, Sandra Lamont, and Debbie (Clayton) Lamont-Dreger, grandchildren, Ryan, Nicholas, Joshua, Samuel, and Hannah, brother Jim (Isabell) Lamont, brother-in-law Roy Boak, sistes-in-law Irene Lamont and June Lamont, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Monday, June 7, 2004 at 1:30 P.M. with Wlima Shirriff officiating.
The Odd Fellows Lodge #3 conducted a service lead by Noble Grand Terry Simpson and Chaplain Ted Howard.
Eulogies were read by Sandra Lamont and Clayton Dreger. Soloist Janine Guinn sang "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross" with Coralie Arundell presiding at the organ.
Pallbearers were Mesrss: Wendall Keeler, Wilfred Pilkington, Don Gunn, Henry Kuhl, Kenny Rintoul and Terry Skinner.
Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Alvin Vern Garnham
Peacefully on Monday, July 5, 2004 with his family at his side at the Grace General Hospital, Winnipeg, Alvin Garnham of Winnipeg and formerly of Portage la Prairie, beloved husband of Ruth passed away at the age of 86 years.
Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Friday, July 9th, 2004 at 1:30 P.M. with the Reverend Canon Alvin Jacobs.
Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.
Alvin was born May 8, 1918 in Fannystelle, MB. to Alfred and Zelda Garnham.
He attended NorthWard School in Portage.
In his younger years he farmed, worked in a brickyard and also fished with his brother Alfred on Lake Manitoba.
He also worked at MacDonald Airport and later C.F.B. Portage as a Public service employee with Base construction engineering department.
He retired after 31 years of service. He kept busy doing odd jobs at various places in Portage.
He and Ruth moved to Courtney, B.C. for two years and moved back to Winnipeg where he resided until his passing.
Alvin was interested in curling, woodworking and he loved to garden.
After retiring he and Ruth traveled to numerous locations.
Predeceased by his parents, one son; Roy, one daughter; Melba Bruinooge, three brothers; Bob, Bill and Alfred and one son-in-law; Mike Mawle.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 66 years Ruth, two sons; Vern (Jane) and Bryan, two daughters; Shirley Mawle (Dave) and Janice (Danny) Woodward, fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great- grandchildren.
Also surviving are four brothers; Les, George, Jim and Stanley, four sisters; Amy, Muriel, Ethel and Joyce, one son-in-law; John Bruinooge and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place prior to the service.

Lorne Edmondson
With family at his side, on Tuesday, July 20th, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital, Lorne Edmondson of Oakville, Manitoba, beloved husband of Jean Edmondson passed away at the age of 79 years.
Funeral service will be held in the Knox United Church, Oakville, Manitoba on Monday, July 26th, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. with the Reverend Julie Baker officiating.
Lorne was born on the family farm on June 30th, 1925 to Frederick and Margaret Edmondson.
He was raised on the farm and received his education in Fortier and Oakville.
After school he continued farming raising purebred Yorkshire pigs and purebred Shorthorn cattle until his passing.
He married Treva Frohwerk (nee Cook) in 1970. She passed away in 1983.
He married Jean Hay (nee Orchard) in 1989.
Lorne belonged to the Canadian Shorthorn Association, Shorthorn Breeders of Manitoba, Douglas Bull Test Station, President of the Oakville Cemetery Board for 45 years, Oakville 4-H Beef Leader, on the Board of Stewards for the Knox United Church, Portage la Prairie Fair Board, Manitoba Pool Elevator Fortier local board and Oakville Community Hall Board.
He was Administrator of the John A. Nevin Cattle Growers Education Award.
In 1999 he was named Canadian Shorthorn Association Legend of the Breed.
In 2001 he received the American Shorthorn Association Builder of the Breed Award. Lorne enjoyed his annual fall hunting trips.
Predeceased by his parents Frederick and Margaret, wife; Treva, one brother in infancy and one sister-in-law; Elsie, he leaves to mourn his passing his wife; Jean, one daughter; Patricia Dezeng, step-children; Donald (Marsha) Frohwerk, Joan (Keith) Bogue, David Hay, Mark (Marilyn) Hay and Bryan (Tannis) Hay, ten grandchildren; Kevin, Ashley, Ryan, Jackie, Donnie, Jonathan, Brett, Halley, Jessica and Rhett.
Also surviving are three brothers; James, Roy (Clarice) and Mark (Vi).
The family would like to thank the Doctors and nursing staff on the Surgical Ward of Portage District General Hospital for the excellent care Lorne received.

Annie Cuthbert
Peacefully, with her family at her side on Friday, June 4th, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital, Annie Mary Cuthbert (Mason), aged 88 years of Portage Creek, beloved wife of Norman, passed away.
Predeceased by her parents; Lester Mason (1974) and Ellen (Nellie 1972), daughter Linda (in infancy), and brothers; Clifford (Gladys), Leonard (Drina), Bill, Robert (in infancy) and brother-in-law Cecil Wedgewood.
She leaves to mourn in her passing her husband; Norman, children; Ken (Elaine) of Winnipeg, Norma (John) Verwey of Portage, Terri (Ken) Kupidy of Okotoks, AB., Cal (Elaine) of Minnedosa, Dan (Janet) of Portage and sister; Elsie Wedgewood of Kenton, MB.
She is also survived by 38 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Annie was born on the family farm at Oakland, MB. On May 9th, 1916, eldest daughter of Lester and Nellie Mason.
She married Norman Cuthbert on January 28th, 1939 in Winnipeg.
They spent their first two years of marriage on the Cuthbert homestead, then moving to their home on the banks of Portage Creek.
They raised their six children on the family farm.
Annie’s interests were varied and many. She loved the outdoors and what it offered, instilling in her family the appreciation of nature.
She dearly loved country living. Annie had many hobbies - quilting, sewing, baking, preserving, gardening, refinishing antique furniture, sketching and painting.
She raised Shetland ponies and thoroughly enjoyed her Cutter and Cart rides, she also had a soft spot in her heart for every stray cat.
In her early years, she enjoyed playing the piano and organ at church and school functions.
She taught Sunday school at Jackson United Church.
Annie was also a member of the Portage Historical Committee and the Oakland Church in which she actively participated.
In her later years, she enjoyed her "old time’ music and the family knew this was not to be interrupted.
History and heritage were two of her passions. She was involved in the writing of the "Portage la Prairie 1870-1970 Centennial Book", "History of the Portage Rural Schools" (for which she received an award), and many other written stories.
She volunteered her time at the Fort la Reine Museum, spending hours cleaning and cataloguing.
She has donated many items to the museum so history will not be forgotten.
She was also instrumental in the placing of the monument at the Portage Creek School site.
Cremation has taken place and a Graveside Service was held at Hillside Cemetery on Monday, June 14th, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. with the Reverend Margaret Scott officiating.
Ken Cuthbert was Urn Bearer.
Following the service the family invited friends and neighbors to join them at the McKenzie United Church Hall, 85-11th Street NW. for refreshments and fellowship.
