Sophia Marion Owsiak
Suddenly on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital, Sophia Marion Owsiak of Portage la Prairie passed away at the age of 60 years.
Prayers will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Thursday, August 26th at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Bill Parrack officiating.
Funeral service will be held in the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church on Friday, August 27th at 10:30 A.M. with the Reverend Father Michael Mwosu officiating and Deacon Bill Parrack assisting.
Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
Sophie was born on April 15, 1944 daughter of Kathleen and Carl Owsiak at Gladstone, Manitoba.
She was raised and received her education at Amaranth, Manitoba.
Sophia worked for Sam Industries in Portage.
She enjoyed her job at Sam, she loved visiting her friends, music and looking after flowers.
Predeceased by her Mother and one brother; Bert.
She leaves to mourn her passing her father; Carl, two brothers; Edward (Ruth) of Lac DuBonnet and Clifford of Winnipeg, one sister; Helen of Portage la Prairie and several cousins.

Hugh Gwillam Nichol
On Monday, August 30, 2004 at the Rideau Park Personal Care Home, Brandon, Manitoba, Hugh Nichol of Brandon and formerly of Portage la Prairie, widower of the late Edna Nichol, passed away at the age of 92 years.
Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, on Friday, September 3, 2004 at 1:30 PM with the Reverend Dale Woods officiating.
Interment will follow in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery.
Hugh was born on October 8, 1911 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
He attended school at Poplar Bluff.
Hugh married Edna Tucker on July 18, 1942.
Hugh served in the Army at Camp Borden, and worked as an Aircraft mechanic, at Southport during the Second World War.
Other jobs included working for Manitoba Hydro, the Department of Highways, a male attendant at MDC.
He purchased his own taxi business in 1948, to which he later added a fleet of school buses.
Nichol’s Taxi Service was in operation until Hugh’s retirement in the early 1970’s.
After Edna’s death in September of 1978, he resided with his daughter and family in Steinbach for five years.
He then moved to the Appleton Estates in Winnipeg where he lived until moving to Rideau Park in Brandon in June of 2003.
Hugh loved music, taking piano lessons in his 70’s.
He also enjoyed trains, animals and loved playing crib.
Predeceased by his wife Edna, brothers Gordon, Sam, Fred, sisters Eva, Eleanor and Frances.
Hugh will be sadly missed by his children Irene and her husband Dennis from Steinbach, Bill and his wife Kimberly from Brandon.
Hugh is also survived by five grandchildren; Lisa (Chad), Samantha (Freddie), Todd (Cheryl), Kimberly (Tim), Kristine, and five great grandchildren Peyton, Laine, Sydney, Aihnoa, and Lucas.
Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation prior to the service.

Howard Cornell McDonald
On Sunday, August 22, 2004 at the Lions Prairie Manor, Howard Cornell McDonald of Portage la Prairie, widower of the late Jean McDonald (Lyall) passed away at the age of 89 years.
Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Wednesday,
August 25th, 2004 at 1:30 P.M. with the Reverend Ross Taylor officiating.
Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
Howard was born on March 21st, 1915 son of Alice and Chester McDonald at Portage la Prairie, Manitoba where he was raised and received his education.
He farmed most of his life on the farm where he was born.
He married Jean Leslie Lyall and they together raised their family on the same farm.
In June of 2001 he moved to the Lions Prairie Manor.
Howard was active in the Murray United Church, and he served as a school trustee for the Euclid School.
He was also active in the Odd fellow’s Lodge going through the chairs.
He loved violin music and watching his grandsons in 4H, he especially loved anything to do with heavy working horses.
Predeceased by his parents, an infant daughter: Alice Elizabeth, one brother: Lloyd, one sister: Margaret McFadden, he leaves to mourn his passing one son: Grant (Norma) McDonald of Portage, grandsons: Bradley and Lyle, one daughter: Marlene (Larry) Sponarski of Portage and grandsons: Cody and Jay.
Also surviving are two brothers: Davey (Mabel), Hubert (Marg), one sister: Beth Boyle (Bob) all of Portage la Prairie and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law and cousins..

Howard very much enjoyed living at the Lions Prairie Manor and the family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for the care that their Dad received during his stay.
Edwin "Ed" William Biberdorf
On Monday, November 15, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital, Edwin "Ed" William Biberdorf of Edwin, Manitoba, beloved husband of Jean Biberdorf passed away at the age of 77 years.
Funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Friday, November 19, 2004 at 1:30 PM with Pastor John Blum officiating.
Interment will follow in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery.
Ed was born on February 4, 1927, son of Gustav and Emilia Biberdorf in Frobisher, Saskatchewan.
He moved to the Edwin area in 1937 and received his education there.
He was active on the family farm and after his father passed away, he and his brother "Pinky" took over the farm.
He continued on the farm until his passing.
Ed enjoyed curling, baseball, golf (with his best friend Tom), cutting firewood, and gardening.
He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Ed was the #1 grandpa.
Predeceased by his parents, two brothers; Harold and Wilfred, one sister Helen Goodey, he leaves to mourn his passing his wife; Jean, four sons; Cameron of Eagan, Minnesota, Ernie of MacGregor, Barry of Grunthal, and John (Lana) of Lavenham, and their children Jenna and Lance.
Also surviving is one sister Esther Tyler of Maple Ridge, BC and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation on Thursday evening November 18, 2004 from 7 to 8 PM.

Johnny Russell Kucharsky
Johnny Russell Kucharsky, age 63 years, of Rathwell, MB, Passed away quietly at home on September 17, 2004.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth and two young daughters, Kathryn and Karen.
Last respects can be made in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie on Tuesday, September 21st, 2004 between 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 and 8:00 P.M.
A private interment will be held at a later date in Woodlands Cemetery.

Ray Alfred Jensen
It is with sorrow that the family of Ray Jensen announces his death on September 15, 2004 at his farm near Amaranth, Manitoba.
Ray was born on January 18, 1940, in Winnipeg, MB.
He was the youngest child of Alfred and Nell (Hewett) Jensen of Oak Bluff, MB.
Ray was raised in Oak Bluff and received his education there.
On April 28, 1962, Ray and Marlene (Markusson) were married.
Ray entered the work force at an early age in the heavy construction industry.
For a number of years he was a fire fighter with the Fort Garry Fire Department.
He returned to the construction industry and several years ago he and Marlene bought a farm.
Ray especially liked the farm and took great pleasure and pride in the cattle he raised.
Ray was a good mechanic, it has been said that if Ray couldn’t fix it, is couldn’t be fixed.
Ray spent many hours in his shop and he enjoyed restoring antique tractors.
Ray and Marlene had many good times square dancing, fishing at their cabin on Lake Manitoba and playing cards with family and friends.
Ray was predeceased by his Father and Mother Alfred and Nell Jensen and his Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Finnur and Gudrun Markusson.
His loving Wife, Marlene, their sons, Mark (Dana) and Donald (Sandy) as well as grandchildren, Megan, Jeff and Kelsey Jensen survive Ray.
He is also survived by his brother, Norman (Myrna) of Dawson Creek, BC, his brother, Lloyd (Alice) of Winnipeg, MB, his sister, Wilma (Ken) Horton of Winnipeg, MB, and their families.
Marlene’s sisters, Jona (Ben) Borgford and Lorraine (Leonard) Bardarson and their families also survive him.
A Memorial service was held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on Monday, September 20, 2004 at 2:00 with the Reverend Margaret Scott officiating.
Eulogies were read by Helmut Neufeld and Ross Horton.
Soloist Martha Hoehn sang "In The Garden" and the hymn selections were "Amazing Grace" and "Beyond The Sunset" with Dorothy Mustard presiding at the organ.
Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date.

Doreen Edith Howard
On Monday, August 9, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital, Doreen Edith Howard beloved wife of Ernie Howard passed away at the age of 64 years.
Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Friday, August 13, 2004 at 1:30 P.M. with the Reverend Ross Taylor officiating.
Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Doreen was born on November 11, 1939 daughter of Thomas and Edith Day at Killarney where she was raised and received her education and graduated from Neelin School near Killarney, Manitoba.
She was then employed with the Wawanesa Insurance Co. for five years.
She then moved to Winnipeg where she continued her employment with Wawanesa Ins.
In 1974 she moved to Portage la Prairie where she was employed with the Province of Manitoba Public Health.
On January 2nd, 1988 she married Ernest Howard and they continued to make their home in Portage la Prairie.
Doreen was a member of the Army, Navy and Air Force veteran Unit #13 where she enjoyed socializing with her friends and playing shuffleboard and darts.
She enjoyed travelling with her husband to visit friends and relatives.
Predeceased by her parents, three brothers; Larry, Gordon and Gerald.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband; Ernie, son: Brad (Denise) Sanderson of Portage la Prairie, grandchildren: Mellissa, Eric, Michael and great granddaughter: Reece, son: Sean (Laureen) Sanderson of Sandy Bay, grandchildren: Keely, Karlye, Kylie and Triston, step-sons: Kevin (Darlene) Howard of Portage la Prairie, Darcy Howard of Calgary and grandchildren: Josh, Jessica and twins Darcy and Alex.
Also surviving is one sister; Lucille White of Inuvik, N.W.T. and several nieces, nephews, Aunts and Uncles.
