Frieda Elsie Mauthe
Peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2009 Frieda passed away with her family by her side. Frieda was born on January 4, 1919 at Waldersee, Mantiboa. She was the last surviving member of Edward and Amelia Wutzke who moved to Waldersee in 1909.
She is survived by her children Lorraine, Ted (Phyl), Norma, Jeanette (Ted), Donna (Keith), Lynn (Bert), Ronald (Jocelyn), Debra (Chuck), Becky (Greg), Rene and Tamara; fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters in law Martha Wutzke, Kay Nelson and Lynn Cotton; brother in law John (Adeline) Mauthe and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Reinhold; daughter Evelyn; son in law Mike Sanders; parents; three brothers and five sisters.
Mom was involved in the community in many capacities – 4-H Leader, Director of Plumas Agriculture Society, Lutheran Ladies Aid and Lutheran Church Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed bowling, bingo, crocheting, knitting, quilting, ceramics and crafting. She was a good provider, hard worker and devoted mother to all her children. Her homemade baking and goodies were a special treat for her grandchildren. She was a great provider of homemade pickles, preserves, jams, jellies, cabbage rolls and perogies. In her later years, Mom enjoyed retirement on the farm, gardening and growing flowers prior to her move to Village View Lodge in Plumas where she enjoyed the company and social activities with the other residents until her move to Third Crossing Manor in Gladstone.
The family would like to express our thanks and appreciation to the staff of Third Crossing Manor for the excellent care and attention that Mom received while residing there. Special thanks also to Viola Rempel, Edna Single, Laura Frechette and Lorraine McCurray for all their kindness and attention toward Mom.
Funeral Service was held at Christ Lutheran Church in Waldersee, Manitoba on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Leon Gilbertson officiating. Interment followed in the Waldersee Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mother’s name to the Christ Lutheran Church EWL in Waldersee or to Big Grass Community Foundation Inc, Plumas Fund.

Charles Arthur Rosling
Charles Arthur Rosling, son of Charlie and Minnie Rosling passed away at Third Crossing Manor, Gladstone on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the age of 87 years. He was born on July 27, 1922 at Muir, Manitoba. Art started school at Valley Stream and in 1927, the family moved to Golden Stream where he finished school.
Art joined the Canadian Army in July 1942 and returned home in November of 1945 after serving in most of Europe. He then started farming along side his dad in the Palistine District.
Art enjoyed most sports. He played ball, curled, golfed and pitched horseshoes. He also liked to go fishing in the summertime. Art was and avid reader and visited the local library quite a bit.
In 1972, Art moved to Gladstone to look after his Mother and Father until their passing; Charlie in 1973 and Minnie in 1986.
While living in town, Art was the groundskeeper at the golf course for a few years. He moved to Centennial Apartments in 2000 and then in September of 2009 he moved into Third Crossing Manor where he resided until his passing.
Art is predeceased by his only sister Gwen Saunders in 2007. He leaves to mourn his passing, his nephews and nieces Dudley (Sharon) Saunders, Kenneth (Linda) Saunders, Stuart (Joyce) Saunders, Clayton (Cindy) Saunders, Peggy (Tony) MacNeil and Joanne (Doug) Brown as well as several grandnephews and grandnieces.
Funeral Service was held on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Clarke’s Funeral Chapel, Gladstone with Sandra Rex officiating. Urn Bearer was Dudley Saunders. Interment followed in the Gladstone Cemetery.

Louis George Kelemen
Peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2009 at Third Crossing Manor, Gladstone with his family by his side, Louis George Kelemen passed away at the age of 85 years.
Louis was born in Punnichy, Saskatchewan. He farmed with his parents in Punnichy until 1944 when the family moved to Big Point, Manitoba. He married Julia Soos in 1949 and they moved to the Airdale District and began their life together. They raised their family and continued to farm until their retirement in 1985, when they moved to Langruth.
He enjoyed auction sales, selling fish and going to the farm. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church at Amaranth. His greatest joys in life were his grandchildren and the farm.
Louis was predeceased by his parents Paul and Alice Kelemen; brother Steve and sisters Elizabeth, Mary and Helen.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife of sixty years Julia; children George (Janet), Charles and daughter Nicole, Michael, Karen and sons Adam and Eric, Philip (Holly) and children Jessica, Daniel and Martin, as well as three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Julia and sister in law Helen.
Prayers were said on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 7:00 pm at Clarke’s Funeral Chapel in Gladstone.
Funeral Service was held on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Amaranth with Father Roy George Vazhaplankudiyil officiating. Pall Bearers were his sons Michael and Charles, and grandsons Daniel, Martin, Adam and Eric. Flower Bearers were nephews Tim Mahoney and Stephen Soos. Interment took place at St. Emerics Cemetery in Langruth.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association or to a charity of one’s choice.

James Grot Pottinger
On Wednesday, October 28, 2009, James Groat Pottinger passed away at the age of 94. He will be lovingly missed by his wife Phyllis; sons Bill (Myrtle), Allan (Judy), Keith (Carole) and daughter Diane (Steve) as well as 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Also left to mourn is his brother-in-law Vic Fehr (Elsie) and sister-in-law Daisy Burnet (Charlie); nephews Murray (Arlene), Ken (Shirley) and Gerry (Leslie). He was predeceased by his daughter Linda; son Gary; sister Lillie; brothers Tom, Ernie and Bill; nephew Ron and son-in-law Bob Hall.
Jim was born November 10, 1914 on the farm near Manitou, Manitoba to John and Mary Pottinger where they had moved from the Orkney Isles. Later they moved to the Plumas area where Jim started school. His family also lived in the Keyes and Winchester communities.
Jim and Phyllis were married on April 20, 1940 and enjoyed 69½ years together. The first 3½ years were spent on the “Long Place” just southwest of Gladstone. They then moved to the Mekiwin district where they farmed together and raised their family of six. In 1966 after the death of Mom’s sister Gladys, they took on the responsibility of raising four more boys, Murray, Ken, Ron and Gerry. Needless to say it was a very busy household.
In 1988 Dad and Mom retired to Gladstone. In 2003 they sold their house and moved into the Centennial Apartments. Jim enjoyed gardening and spending time at the Drop-in Centre where they made many new friends. Dad became a very good shuffleboard player and enjoyed many games of horseshoes. His visits from his grandchildren and great grandchildren were especially enjoyed. Dad was a hard working man all his life and instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of hard work. He farmed to live and lived to farm. He was a caring and loving father and he believed in strong family values. Sunday was a day for church and visiting family.
Dad enjoyed good health throughout his life until February 2009 when he was hospitalized and then had to move into Third Crossing Manor. We would like to thank the doctors, nurses, home care workers and staff at Third Crossing Manor, Gladstone Hospital and Centennial Apartments for their care and compassion shown to Dad during this time. It was greatly appreciated.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Gladstone United Church with Pastor Michael Fehr officiating. Pallbearers were John Pottinger, Brian Pottinger, Dean Pottinger, Gordon Hall, Jeff Ewart and Stacy Ewart. Interment took place in Gladstone Cemetery.

Glen Joseph Flatfoot
February 11, 1940 – October 30, 2009
Peacefully on Friday, October 30, 2009, Glen Joseph Flatfoot of Sandy Bay, Manitoba passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Glen was predeceased by his parents Francis Desjarlais and Elizabeth Flatfoot; brothers Frank Desjarlais and Andrew Desjarlais; 2 infant sons at birth and 2 infant sisters Ida and Irene. He leaves behind his wife Marguerite Rose; children Gail (Doug), Warren (Kim), Francis (Rita), Christa and Harriet (Kevin); 26 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters Irene Richard, Lillianna Harris (Arthur), Angela Perry (Michael) and Mary Diane Flatfoot; brothers Johnny Desjarlais and Edward Flatfoot.
Glen was born and raised in Sandy Bay, Manitoba. He was and avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He loved the outdoors, camping and fishing. He spent many nights outside with his good friend Laddy (Edward McIvor). He was a very good man who loved to tell jokes and make people laugh. His favourite past time would be sitting at the bingo hall with family or friends, playing VLT’s and buying 649’s.
A traditional wake service began on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at the Sandy Bay Community Complex. Funeral Service was held on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Sandy Bay Community Complex with traditional Elder Cecil Desjarlais officiating. Pallbearers were Terry McIvor, Edward Desjarlais, Eugene Eastman, Trevor Mousseau, Warren Mosseau Jr. and Wade Mousseau. Honourary Pallbearers were Joseph McIvor (Tiger), Norman Mousseau (Indook), Edward McIvor (Bratty), John Beaulieu, Edward Peters, Johnny Richard (Nah-Do), Angus Star (Papasay), Lloyd McIvor, ‘lil Mason Moar, Delphis F.West and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Marie Bernice Desjarlais
Passed away suddenly at the Portage General Hospital on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at the age of 70 years after a lengthy illness.
She is predeceased by her parents Vital McIvor and Emma Levasseur; husband Lawrence Desjarlais; her son Dennis Desjarlais Sr. and brothers George and Joseph McIvor. She leaves to mourn her passing, her children Charles Kubb, Jerry (Mary), Sheila (Gordon), Susie (George) and Alana (Joey); daughter in law Diane; brothers Leslie (Millie), Alex, Milton (Marilyn) and Wallace (Sheila); sister Patsy (Albert); fourteen grandchildren Dennis Jr. (Olivia), Nathan (Katherine), Jeffrey (Katrina), Joel, (Sara) Anthony, Erica (C.J.), Sally (Jeremy), Sheldon, Leanne, Helen (Devon), Cara, Paul, Emily, Krystle and Jarret; great grandchildren Srandon, Blake, Amery, Jayda, Nathaniel Jr., Tyra, Dennis Jr. III, Joel Jr., Haylie, Clarence Jr., Katie and Jonas; special goddaughter Viola as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Bernice was born on March 28, 1939 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. She was a wonderful, kind, nurturing, respectful, cheerful and loving woman. She was married to the Late Lawrence Desjarlais. She lived her life in Sandy Bay. In her younger years she was very versatile. She worked with her husband with various farmers in Portage picking beets, onions, potatoes and so on. Throughout her lifetime she had the chance to live with most of her children and their families. Her hobbies included bingo, playing cards, fiddling tunes, gospel music, singing, socializing with family and friends and watching television. Her favourite actor was Steven Seagal who she adored most. Every film Steven was performing in she had to see. She enjoyed spending quality time with her children, grandchildren, friends and family. She was the eldest in her family and loved her younger siblings. In her lifetime she struggled with diabetes. She was a dialysis patient for 11 years. Despite her condition, she was a very strong person in the world who battled to stay alive and be with her family. She was the best person in the world who will be sadly missed by all her children, grandchildren, friends and family. Special thanks to Sheila and Gordon Houle who kept Bernice. The family would like to give thanks for the donators, the family and friends who attended the wake and funeral and volunteers who helped out. They would also like to thank the staff at the Dialysis Unit at Portage General Hospital, Chief and Council, Sandy Bay Homecare, her dearest friends Marge Whitford and Sylvia Richard.
Wake began on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the Sandy Bay First Nation Complex. Funeral Service was held on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Amaranth with Father Roy George Vazhaplankudiyil officiating. Pallbearers were Jeffrey, Joel, Terry, Stacey, Jason and Benjamin Jr. Honourary Pallbearers were her friends, family and grandchildren. Interment took place in the Sandy Bay Cemetery.

Alex Antoniuk
Alex was born October 15, 1922 in Wolyn, Poland. He came to Canada with his family in 1929 aboard the Polonia, arriving in Halifax. He passed away November 3, 2009 in the Neepawa Hospital at the age of 87 years and 18 days.
He married Ann Hanke on August 22, 1943. They resided in Grass River, Amaranth and Plumas since October 1961. He leaves to mourn his wife Ann of 66 years and four children Murray (Pat), Faye (Gary) Welch, Sandra (George) Roberts, Blair (Pam) and one sister Minnie East. Alex had 9 grandchildren Jeffery and Andrea Antoniuk, Wade and Brad Welch, Tamara, Chris and Scott Roberts, Brett and Jordan Antoniuk. He had 5 great grandchildren Coleton, Connor, Autumn and Torie Welch, Nova-Bella Antoniuk as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Anastasia; sisters Mary, Molly, Dorothy, Olga and Annie and brother Basil.
Memorial Service was held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Plumas United Church with Wendy Denbow officiating. Urn Bearer was Blair Antoniuk. Honourary Urn Bearers were his Grandchildren and everyone in attendance was considered Honourary Pallbearers. Interment took place in the Plumas Cemetery.
