LOTTIE GOODWILLIE - (nee Grosser)
Passed away on September 23, 2009 at Third Crossing Manor, Gladstone, MB. at the age of 84.
Charlotte Emilie Grosser was born June 11, 1925 in Steyr, Austria, the only child of Leopold Johann Grosser and Emilie Marie Ruzicka. In 1927, the family immigrated to Canada. Lottie had a happy childhood, growing up in the North End of Winnipeg. Her school years were spent at Luxton School and St. John’s High School. After finishing Grade 10, Lottie took a Secretarial Course and started working for Retail Credit Company, where she met her husband George Goodwillie. They were married in July, 1947, in Winnipeg and their first child, Linda was born in 1948. At this point, Lottie became a stay-at-home Mom, although she continued to do typing at home. In 1962, their son David was born, and this was also the year that George started his own company, Progress Reporting. For the next 8-9 years, Lottie and George worked together to make Progress Reporting a success, but they eventually sold the company and George took a job with the Federal Government. The new job was at the Manpower Office in Brandon, Manitoba, but they decided to live along the Arden Ridge near Neepawa where George had bought a ¼ section of land years earlier. They bought a mobile home and made the move to the farm in 1973. This was a dream come true for George, but Lottie wasn’t too sure about the move to begin with, but grew to enjoy the next 30 years they spent on the farm. Lottie always had a soft spot for animals and there were always a few cats and a dog in the house. George bought a few head of cattle and Lottie fed and watered them all winter while he was at work. She enjoyed the cattle and had names for them all. She also got into gardening in a big way, planting trees around the yard site, creating flower beds and growing lots of vegetables. She had a very sharp mind and loved Crossword puzzles, Logic puzzles, playing bridge and cards of any kind. She also did a lot of needle work and crocheted hundreds of doilies. Unfortunately, poor circulation in her legs caused a premature end to her gardening endeavors and in 2003, Lottie had to have her leg amputated above the knee. In October, 2003 she moved into Third Crossing Manor, Gladstone, but was able to do most things for herself up until the last few weeks. In February, 2004, George joined her in Gladstone, living in an apartment adjoining the Manor. They were able to visit back and forth until George’s death in July 2005. Lottie continued on at Third Crossing spending her days doing Logic Puzzles and listening to Books on Tape and playing cards with her daughter Linda.
Lottie is survived by her daughter Linda (Ken) Otto of Gladstone, son David Goodwillie of Regina, SK; by grandchildren Joelle Freeborn of Gladstone, Jason (Lina) Cooper of Yellowknife, NT, Keith Otto of Winnipeg and Karen Charlotte Otto of Brandon; by greatgrandchildren Kaylee Cook of St. Albert, AB, Blaine Cook of Gladstone, Kyle and Cassidy Cooper of Yellowknife, NT; brother-in-law Bill Appleyard of Regina, SK. She was predeceased by her husband George in 2005, her greatgrandson Brett Cook in 2002, her sisters-in-law Jeanie (Goodwillie) Appleyard and Mary Goodwillie in 2007, brother-in-law John Goodwillie in 1995; also dear friends Peter and Jean Hunter of Arden.
The family would like to acknowledge the fine care of the staff of Third Crossing Manor and a special thank you to Marg Broadfoot of the Gladstone Library for keeping Mom supplied with Books on Tape. Donations may be made to the Gladstone District Library, Box 720, Gladstone, MB in Lottie’s memory.
The Funeral was held September 29, 2009 at 11:00 am at Clarke’s Funeral Chapel, Gladstone and interment followed at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg with Rev. Chad McCharles officiating.

Edward Harry "Ted" Petter
Peacefully and with his "girls" at his side, Ted passed away on October 6th, 2009 at the Deer Lodge Centre. Predeceased by his beloved wife Ella, Ted was the last remaining member of his family in Ontario. He was recently predeceased by his son-in-law Clifford Huskins and his foster granddaughter Crystal. Remaining to love and remember him forever are his daughters, granddaughter and their families Annette and Robert Holowka, Tonya, Rob (Isabella), David (Amber), Mark (Tara); Lorraine Huskins, Faye (Dallas), Dara (Garette), Jennifer (Jared), Jamie (Megan). Also remaining are many nieces and nephews in Ontario, especially Betty Peterson who made many trips "out west" to see Uncle Ted and also his sisters-in-law Betty and Lily and his brother-in-law Bill and their families in England.
Ted's life was a story! Raised in the beautiful Bruce Peninsula, he learned to fish, hunt, trap, cut wood, swim, boat and even to garden. Despite working hard even as a young boy growing up, he always found time to read. He left Ontario at age sixteen and travelled west, eventually settling down in Woodside, Manitoba. He remained here until the outbreak of World War II and bragged that he was the first one to volunteer from the community. He wanted to join the navy or the air force as he had walked all across Ontario and the west during the depression but the army got him first. He was shipped overseas in 1940 and served until he was discharged in 1945. It was during his time in England that he met Ella. Although she was not impressed with Canadian soldiers, she was quite taken with this handsome young soldier. They married and were fortunate enough to spend 49 years together. Ted farmed in the Woodside community until 1969 when he accepted employment with Water Resources. For the next 18 years, he enjoyed the challenge of the work and the camaraderie of his "crew" and engineers. He retired at age 70. As a family, we hold many precious memories of hunting trips, ski-doo rides, camping and the ritual of tea and toast at night in front of the "franklin". You will be so missed.
For the past nine years, Ted has resided in the Deer Lodge Centre. The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Tower 4 who made the lodge a home for our dad. Your care and compassion for him went above and beyond the call of duty. We will never forget.
So when his glorious task was done, It was not of his fame we thought; But of the pride with which he fought; And so we graved his epitaph, "He played the game".
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 at 2:00pm at the Gladstone United Church, with Rev. Bob Hunter officiating. Interment followed in the Gladstone Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3J 0L3.
