Peacefully, on April 20, 2014 at Grace Hospital, Roland passed away at the age of 97 years.
Dad was born in Hartney, Manitoba in 1916. He was raised there until he finished high school during the depths of the depression. He travelled around the country looking for employment and found a job in Vancouver. He returned to Hartney and worked for his father who had just purchased a hardware store.
In 1941 he married Lillian (Bud) Woodhull and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He taught navigation with the Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Brandon, MB and in Summerside, PEI. From there he went to the Bahamas for training for deployment into the Pacific. The Atomic Bomb ended the war before he was shipped.
He returned to Hartney to work in the hardware store and eventually took it over upon the death of his parents. During that time he had an experience in local politics. He was a town councilor, and mayor of Hartney.
He ran the store until his retirement in 1975. He and Lillian spent many happy winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. In Arizona they square danced, enjoyed family visits and just lived the good life.

Rhoda Bowen

It is with great sadness that after a short illness the life journey of Rhoda Iolean Bowen was completed at Swan Valley Health Centre on February 13th, 2014.
Rhoda (Iolean) was born in Hamilton, Ontario on May 24th, 1927. She moved to the Swan River Valley at an early age with her parents Lillian and Verne Gunter. She attended Taylor School for one year and then the family moved and homesteaded in the McKinley District, Northeast of Birch River. Rhoda completed her education at McKinley School.
The depression and WW II were formative years for Rhoda during her teens. She worked very hard on the family farm and later as a hired girl for local families.
Rhoda was united in marriage to Clifford (Buck) Bowen of Birch River on August 19th, 1948 and began her married life on the farm South of Birch River. She worked by her husband’s side while raising their two daughters. During those years there always seemed to be no end of young people around the farm and Rhoda was friend and mother to them all. Rhoda and Buck continued to live on the farm for a number of years after the family had grown and gone, then moved into Birch River in 1985.
Rhoda was predeceased by her mother Lillian in 1967, father Verne in 1981 and her life partner Buck in 2006.
In 2007 Rhoda moved to Swan River to be closer to family. Here she enjoyed getting involved with some new organizations and meeting new friends.
One of Rhoda’s greatest pleasures in life was family time, her many friends and the special girls she held in her heart. Rhoda always had time to listen and was willing to help in any way she could. She truly spent her life time earning her very own angel wings.
Reading, gardening, church, social events, playing cards, garage sales, are only a few of the many things that kept Rhoda busy and happy.
Rhoda was a life member of the Birch River Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Birch River horse club, a member of Anglican Church Women, to mention a few of the Organizations she participated in over the years.
Rhoda is survived by two daughters, Lynda (Mel) Phillips and Nancee (Russ) Grundy, two grandchildren Theryl and Matthew (Mary Louise Davis), and a brother Morris (Moe) Chumbley of Deseronto, Ontario. Also left to mourn her passing are many daughters, sons and children and grandchildren that she chose with her heart and loved dearly.
She will be greatly missed by all.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 19th, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the
Birch River Legion Hall, Birch River, Manitoba. Venerable Tom Stradwick officiated.
Those wishing to do so may donate to Canadian Cancer Society, the

Ella Jeanette Toivonen

My grandma was a dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was loved by everyone she met. She always had a smile to light up any gloomy day.
Ella Jeanette Rose was born on July 21st, 1940 in Swan River, Manitoba. She was married to William Konkin and had four children with him; Lee, Rose, William and John. In 1989 William passed on and Ella remarried in 1993 to Vecko Bert Toivonen which is the name we all know her by now. She unfortunately had to suffer with losing him as well in 1998.
All through my life she was a happy person that could cheer anyone up in minutes. She always welcomed everyone into her home; this included strangers and special occasions like family holidays. She would never make anyone feel badly, even if she did not like them, she was nice and cheerful to them and helped anyone she could that was in need.
We will always miss her dearly but in this dark hour I know Ella Toivonen would not want us to mourn her passing but want us to celebrate the life she had with us and for us to remember the times she was here with us. So for her, I now ask you not to feel sorry that she is gone but to be happy that she will never be hurt, sick or suffer again. She is with us all to see all that we do and say, still in our hearts and memories. She is looking down from the heavens above and I bet she is sitting there with a smile at how we are remembering her with the good times we had with her not the times that had not yet come.
Visitations took place beginning at 1:00 PM on August 22nd for the hour prior to the funeral service. A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM on August 22nd, 2013 from the Chapel of Paull Funeral Home, Swan River, Manitoba. Pastor Reg Rivet officiated. Ella was laid to rest in the Birchwood Cemetery, Swan River, Manitoba following the funeral service.
Paull Funeral Home and Crematorium were honoured to have served the family.
