Ella Isabelle Kowalchuk
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Ella Isabelle Kowalchuk on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at the Portage General Hospital. Mom was born February 27, 1931 and lived and attended school in the Springbrook area and stayed in the Austin community.
Mom met Nick Kowalchuk and they were married on September 24, 1949. They raised six children. She worked at the Portage General Hospital as a Nurses Aide before she was married. She worked at Carnation Foods for 8 years after the children were finished school. She loved selling Tupperware and began selling since Jan. 1963. She has met many people from all over Manitoba. She travelled to various cities to conventions, loved meeting new people and was the envy of many dealers. She continued to sell to this very day. We always knew what we would get as gifts from Mom.
Mom was involved in many community organizations. She was a member of the Anglican Christ Church, A.C.W., G.A., 4-H, Austin Figure Skating Club, school pen pal program. She was a charter member of the Museum Ladies Auxiliary, Gov’t appointee to the Board of Directors and held position for many years. Volunteered at the Thresherman’s Reunion Administration Office. She looked forward to it every summer. She was Secretary for the Fellows Assoc. Committee of the Manitoba Agricultural Museum at Austin. She loved garage sales, auctions, flea markets. She always loved a good bargain. She loved to watch her children and grandchildren play hockey, baseball and would travel to various places with Dad to cheer them on.
Mom loved gardening, planting flowers, picking berries, making jams and jellies. She was a very generous person and loved to help people out.
She liked the idea of moving to Austin from the farm in April 2005 and enjoyed meeting and having great neighbours. She loved going for coffee at the Bake Shop and meeting friends.
She had strong values in trying to instill honesty and integrity into her children’s lives. She had strong political views.
She loved to travel and her trips with Dad to Alaska were a highlight as well as a car trip to Southern Illinois to visit family. She always commented on the narrow mountain roads in B.C. that she travelled with family.
Mom loved playing cards and would travel in any kind of weather. She loved Bingo and would play twice a week. She loved the friendships that she made at these functions.
She was a busy mother and could recall things that happened years ago by detail. You could always find her talking on the phone with family or reading her newspapers. She loved every minute of life.
On Thursday, February 19th after a busy day Mom suffered a massive stroke and went to hospital on Friday. Thank you to both Val and the Emergency Services. Thank you to the Staff at the Portage General Hospital for their excellent care for Mom.

God called on his angels to come for his son, now he is with him, and we can only be proud because he will no longer suffer like he did in this world. We love you Barry. Jake (Jacob) Hoeppner
Dad was born on November 26, 1928 to Jacob and Mary Hoeppner in the RM of Stanley. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 29, 2009.
Dad gave his heart to God sometime in his later teens.
Dad spent most of his growing up years in the Morden district until his parents moved to the MacGregor area in the 1940’s.
It was at MacGregor that Dad met Rosie Unrau, the love of his life, when she was only 15 years old. They were wed 3 years later on November 22, 1952. Together Mom and Dad had 4 sons and 2 daughters. Dad was a hard worker, but he still found time and energy to spend with his children. In the early years of their marriage Mom and Dad made their home in Winnipeg, where Dad worked mainly as a tinsmith and gas fitter. But his first love was farming, so they moved to their first farm south of Austin in 1960. From there, they continued farming at MacGregor and Waldersee. Finally Dad, along with Mom often by his side, spent the next few years enjoying God’s creation while delivering the Free Press to the drop-off places on his route. Mom and Dad retired to Brandon when Dad was in his late fifties. Dad found the inactivity a challenge, and they ended coming full circle when they bought an acreage at Austin. Dad remained busy in his retirement. He enjoyed camping, gardening, yard work, travelling, going for coffee, volunteering at camp and clerking at the MCC stores. Mom and Dad also enjoyed singing together at home and in service to their Lord. He spent many hours in his recliner reading the book he loved the best, his Bible.
Grandparenting came early in Dad’s life, and even though they were still busy raising children, he was very proud of his first grandchild. All of his children were dear to him. Mom and Dad travelled many miles, provided willing hands, spent countless hours on their behalf, and most importantly, prayed daily for each one by name.
Dad is survived by Rosie, his wife of 56 years; sons James (Jim), Timothy (Donna), Kenneth (Janice) and David (Johanna); daughters Janet Buhler (Alan) and Sharon Loewen (Reg); 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 brother Peter; 4 sisters Kay Hankel, Mary Peters, Irene Fox and Jean Hoeppner.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Mary Hoeppner; 1 brother in infancy; sister Shirley Kennedy; and nephew Glen Peters.
