Jessie Myrtle Short (nee Walsh)

With great sorrow we watched her go.
Jessie entered into rest Friday, January 4, 2008 at Riverview Health Center, Winnipeg.
Jessie was born in Neepawa, Mb. on June 22, 1941. She grew up in the Mayfeld District and attended Bear Creek School. Jessie lived and worked first as a waitress, for Monroes, in Westbourne for the summer of 1957 and then in Winnipeg from 1957 to 1959, as a clerk and administrative assistant for the Civil Service. She then returned to Mayfeld and married Jim (James Short) on December 22, 1959 in Gladstone, Mb. Jessie and Jim lived in Mayfeld for two years before moving to Helston in 1961, (Gregg) North Cypress in 1973 and finally to Carberry in October of 1990. Jessie worked the potatoe harvest with Mid Man farms from the mid 70’s to mid 80’s, and joined the staff at Davidson’s Carberry, in March of 1990 where she worked until Spring of 2005. In Mayfeld and Helston Jessie was active in the community and after moving to Gregg joined the Royal Canadian Legion as well as the Royal Purple in Carberry.
Jessie was a hard worker all her life. Whether she was working with her dad and the horses at home, applying herself at school, looking after her home, husband and four children or as an employee she put everything she had into everything she did. Jessie’s lifelong passion where she focussed her boundless love and energy, was her family. The last years of her life were dedicated to spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, sharing with them many gifts but most especially her love and attention. She worked very hard at making those close to her feel special. Jessie’s spirit, generosity and caring were felt by many and she will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Jessie was predeceased by her father Clifford John Walsh April 1, 2000 and her mother Evelyn Hope (Reeves) Walsh September 30, 2005. She is survived by her husband Jim of Carberry; daughter Heather Short and son Michael Smith of Wpg, sons Richard (Dianne McCormack) Damon, Nolan and Aaron of Rainy River, ON, Mark (Heather Tole) Wpg, and Perry (Shannon) Dylan and Alexandra of Dealtown, ON; brothers and sisters Ray (Hertha) Brandon Mb, Lynda (George) McGinnis, Wpg, Patsy Walsh, Wpg, Laurie (Gayleen) Sioux Lookout, ON, Sherrell Walsh Brandon, and Darrell of Wpg; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
A memorial service was held Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carberry United Church with Rev. Peggy Reid officiating. A private interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jessie’s memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue Room ON1160, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9 or a charity of one’s choice.

Roseline Martha Hiller

Roseline Martha Hiller, dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away from this world of pain and care on January 9, 2008 at her residence.
Mom was born on June 29, 1932 at Silbbald, Alberta to Gustav and Emma Brust (nee Link). At the age of five she moved with her family to Cherhill, Alberta. Here she received her schooling, then worked in the area and later in Saskatoon.
On November 14, 1952 she was wed to Edward Wilhelm Hiller at the family’s farm at Cherhill, Alberta. As a honeymoon couple, they motored to Manitoba with all her worldly belongings packed in their 1951 Oldsmobile. Her piano followed by C.N. rail. That piano gave many hours of enjoyment; there was nothing better than getting a new gospel song book and then try out some new songs. Amanda remembers as a small child standing on a chair beside her mom to sing duets in church. The piano remains in the family with Sarah following in grandma’s musical footsteps.
Once at the farm a new life began with plenty of hard work, raising her family, milking cows by hand, raising chickens, pigs, ducks, and geese, picking stones, bindering and stooking. She always tended a big garden with hundreds of quarts of canned fruits, pickles and preserves put up for a long winter.
Mom loved flowers wild and tame or house plants and took pride in her lovely huge perennial garden. You can be sure you would be sent home with an armful of peonies, delphiniums, dahlias, gladiolas or whatever was in bloom. She loved to share her fresh flowers with all, be it at a funeral, wedding, bridal shower, graduation or worship service. Watching for the first Golden Marsh Marigolds at the corner of #5 was a spring tradition. She was looking forward to once again getting her fingers into the soil come summer.
Mom enjoyed reading and embroidery work and spent many hours doing both. Her embroidery work has become a keepsake for most of us.
Even though farm life was very busy, mom always tried to attend church and felt it was important for her children to grow up in faith – the faith she had learned at the knees of her mother and father; the faith that kept her going through many tough times.
On April 4, 2000 she renewed her faith and by confirmation became a member of the United Church of Canada. She felt it was important that we maintain our small community church.
Mom will be deeply missed by her children, daughter Amanda and Emil Petrowski and their five children to whom she will be ever remembered as oma and great oma; Orest and fiancée Amber; Jocelyn and Ian Cottingham and their children Levi, Sienna, and Deklan, Chantelle and Dean Zamonsky, Dustin and fiancée Ciji and their two children Tyla and Carson; and Tiffany. By sons Garth and (Joyce); Mark and Marrie and their 3 children Mathew, April and Shawn who will always remember grandma; Kent and Christi and their children Sarah and Paul who will remember grandma Rosie. She is also survived by two older sisters Mary Grams of Vernon B.C. and Erna Brust of Calgary, Alberta; sister-in-law Erna Brust of Barrhead, Alberta as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Edward in 1995, one sister Matilda and one brother Leonard.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Glenella Community Hall with Rev. George Cargo officiating. Interment followed in the Goodland Cemetery, Glenella, Manitoba. Pallbearers were Harry Lazor, Leonard Mitchler, Sheldon McDonald, Roland Kuip, Gerhardt Juskowiak and Floyd Clark.
If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Roseline’s memory to the St. Andrews United Church, Glenella, Manitoba, R0J 0V0.

Alice Helen Grove

Alice (Mollie) Grove passed away peacefully on January 28, 2008 at Third Crossing Manor, Gladstone, Manitoba, at the age of 96 years.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter Helen (Jim); grandchildren Kimberly (Les) and Cyrus (Sharon); great grandchildren Jamie, Morgan, Juliana, and Gracie; brother Sylvester; sister- in-law Catherine; nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert, father Sylvie, mother Alice, brother Adam, and sister-in-law Thelma.
Mom lived all her life in the RM of Westbourne. She grew up on a farm and when she married Gilbert Grove in 1940 she only moved one mile north of her birth place. She and her husband farmed until 1975 when they rented their farm. In 1977 they built a house in Gladstone and moved into town in the fall. Alice stayed in her house until she moved into 110 Legion Place and the last several years she spent at Third Crossing Manor.
Mom enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers. She enjoyed trips taken with her husband Gilbert to Norway and Alaska. She enjoyed the company of her family. She was an excellent cook. Everyone especially looked forward to her excellent desserts, which followed a full meal. Her butter tarts deserve to be specially mentioned. She also did beautiful tatting in her early years. She will be remembered as quiet, kind, considerate, and always willing to help out when needed. Mom will be missed by us all. We love you and may you rest in peace.

Fabian “Sam” McIvor
May 26, 1965 ~ January 30, 2008

Manitoo Binessi – God’s Thunderbird
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden and untimely death of our dear beloved brother, cousin, uncle and friend, Fabian “Sam” McIvor. Sam was raised by the late Norbert and Hazel Doreen Roulette. He attended Sandy Bay School and later moved to Winnipeg where he resided until his passing.
Sam was predeceased by his father Albert J. Roulette. He is survived by his mother, Mary Myrtle McIvor, 3 sisters Norma Anne Roulette (Dave), Sandra McIvor (Sonny) and Alison Desjarlais (Kyle); six brothers Edward Houle (Amanda), Kenny, Albert (Norma), Tony (Phyllis), Frank, and Sherrold Desjarlais; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and extended family.
Sam had his own unique lifestyle but we respected his choices. He enjoyed entertaining, cooking, decorating, babysitting, socializing and traveling. He was gifted with an excellent memory for remembering names and phone numbers. He had a nickname/comment for everyone he met. Sam volunteered at Children Of The Earth School in the Native Language program.
Even when he was living in Winnipeg he still kept in touch with friends and family in Sandy Bay. He often traveled out to visit and attend different functions.
We admired his courage in the challenges he faced on a daily basis caused by his surgery he underwent three years ago for throat cancer.
We’ll miss his sense of humor, his love of life and his storytelling.
Wake service began on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in the Sandy Bay Community Complex.
Funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba. Interment followed in the Sandy Bay Cemetery.
