Walter John Bodnarchuk
September 23, 1924 – February 24, 2008
We are incredibly saddened to announce the passing of Walter at the Carberry Health Centre the morning of February 24, 2008.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 59 years, Alyce; daughter Donna (Terry) Smith; son Doug (Shannon); grandchildren Chad Bodnarchuk, Melanie Bodnarchuk and Tannis Smith (Bobby Winslow); great grandson Kayden Winslow; sister Mary McClelland; brother Jerry (Phyllis); sisters in law Evelyn Bodner and Catherine Menzies Watt (Almer); as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Kathryn; brothers Steven (Retta) Gordon; sisters Dora (Steven Sloboda) and Elizabeth (Frank Lloyd); and brother in law Allan McClelland.
Walter was born at Roseisle, Manitoba on September 24, 1924, the second youngest son of Alexander and Kathryn. He moved with his family to Rathwell in 1928 where he attended school and worked at various jobs. He joined the army on April 1, 1943 and served our country until 1945.
He was discharged on August 9, 1945 because of a gunshot wound and a spot on his lung. Walter was sent to the Ninette Sanitorium for treatment and rest. His stay at the San was the best thing that ever happened to him. He was cared for by a nurse’s aide named Alyce Edgar. After some serious flirting by both of them, a courtship began. They were married on April 18, 1948.
Walter and Alyce then took over the Edgar family farm operation. Walter was a hard working man-raising chickens, milking cows, grain farming, gardening and wood carving. Taking pictures of the family, nature and the great outdoors was a particular interest to him. He also had a natural talent for sketching and drawing.
Walter and Alyce spent countless hours together keeping their garden and yard meticulous. There were some summers Walter planted well over 500 glads.
Walter and Alyce were tremendous hosts. They always made anyone who walked through their door feel welcome and when you sat down at the kitchen table for tea you knew a feast would be served.
Walter served as a trustee on the Melvin School Board, member of the Austin United Church and a member of the Austin Lions Club.
Walter loved his pets, Sasha the dog; Red, Midnight and Felix the cats. He also loved to watch the birds come to the feeder every morning.
Walter was a family man. He centered his entire life around his family. Alyce and Walter were blessed with over 59 years of marriage. The love and devotion to his wife was indescribable. Over 4 years ago, due to medical problems, Walter had to make the painful decision to move Alyce to the Third Crossing Manor to be cared for. His dedication to her continued. He would faithfully go to visit her at least 5 times a week. He quickly became involved with all the activities at the Manor.
Walter was so proud of his grandchildren. His role of grandpa took on many twists; whether it be tobogganing, movie and popcorn nights, teaching how to make perogies, building their toys, attending their numerous events, going out for a cruise, or hunting for the perfect Christmas tree, he was there.
Walter never quite retired from grain farming. He was Doug’s right hand man in every aspect of the farm operation. Walter also enjoyed watching Doug with his restoration projects and offering his free advice.
The funeral service to celebrate Walter’s life was held at the Austin United Church on Thursday, February 28, 2008 with Rev. Peggy Reid officiating. Shannon Bodnarchuk gave the eulogy. Connie Bryce presided at the organ. Hymn selections were “Abide With Me”, “Beyond The Sunset” and “The Lord’s Prayer”. Special Music was “Thank You” and “Remember When”. Attending in their respective groups were members of the Austin Lions Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Gladstone Branch #110. Ushers were Marge McMillan and Donella Thiessen. Pallbearers were John Thiessen, Cecil Jones, Jerry Doucette, Bill Bodner, Brad Williams and Jim Hanna. A private family interment took place at the Austin Cemetery. A time of fellowship and refreshments was served at the Austin and District Community Hall.
