William Edward Barrie
82, Birtle, Man.
William Barrie, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at Sunny Side Manor in Birtle, Man., at the age of 82.
Bill was the second oldest of nine children born to John and Mary Ellen Barrie on Dec. 28, 1918 in Florence, Cape Breton, N.S.
He left school following Grade 8 and worked as a hoist operator in the Bras d’Or coal mines. He joined the RCAF in 1941 and was stationed at Paulson near Dauphin in 1944. Shortly after his arrival, he met Elsie Robson at a dance at Dauphin Beach – no wonder the lake was a special place for him. They were married on Jan. 10, 1945.
Upon his discharge he took a decorating course and he painted and papered many homes and businesses in Dauphin. In 1955 he became a guard at the Dauphin jail. Before taking early retirement on May 24, 1979, he prepared a time capsule to be opened on Jan. 1, 2000, by the present guards. As time grew closer he hoped he would be able to know their comments. Unfortunately, his health did not allow that.
In 1992 he married Gertie Moulson and spent the last years of his life in Birtle not far from Bev’s family.
Over the years Bill spent in Dauphin, he served on the Parks Board, he was a member of the United Church - even having his own reserved seat.
He was a member of the curling club, the golf course and he enjoyed those sports as well as fishing, hunting, cooking, storytelling and helping others.
Bill was very active in the Dauphin Branch of the legion and was a continuous member for 49 years. He was president for two terms and received a life membership in 1966. He served on the executive in just about all committees with the exception of secretary. Bill served as liaison officer between the legion and the legion seniors club. He was also service officer and was responsible for getting many veterans and their spouses help through the DVA. He worked with the Dauphin Cemetery Board getting the veterans’ headstones cleaned and repaired. Before leaving Dauphin he was instrumental in building the veteran’s memorial at the cemetery.
Bill always took an active part in canvasses for the Salvation Army, Red Cross and the Remembrance Day Poppy Drive. For his dedication to the legion, he received the Meritorious Service Medal in 1989.
Bill was very proud of his grandchildren and the special times in their lives were special to him too. He was always happy to have seen them grow from children to young adults. He was happiest when he could entertain family or friends.
The saddest days in Bill’s life were when daughter, Shirley was killed on Aug. 10, 1976 and when his wife, Elsie died on Dec. 24, 1987. He was also predeceased by his parents, mother-in-law, Dorothy Robson, brother, Anthony, sister, Marguerite, stepsister, Helen, niece, Dorothy and in-laws, Laura and Maurice Pocklington, Rena and Fred Bawdon, Ed and Helen Robson, Ernie and Nelda Robson, Fred and Mary Robson, Lizzie Barrie, John B. LeBlanc and Aubrey McKinnon.
Left to cherish his memories are daughter, Beverley and Lloyd Wotton, Foxwarren; grandchildren, Scott and Melanie Wotton, Mark and Melanie Wotton, Julie Wotton, Karen Wotton, Wade Miller and special friend, Kirrile Bowden; great-granddaughters, Courtney Belle and Torie Lee; son-in-law, Glenn Miller and his wife, Lynn and their children, Sheryl and Christopher. He is survived by brothers, Jim, Phonse (Betty), Frank (Joan), sisters, Mary Ellen LeBlanc, Theresa Barrie, Cecelia (Tom) Simpson, stepbrother, Percy and brother-in-law, Spurgie Hogue, all of Cape Breton. Uncle Bill will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and their children. He will also be remembered by Gertie and her children, Derry and Katherine, Howard and Georgie, Faith and Gordie, Effie and Merv, Marnie and Dave, Robbie and Mary and their children.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the Dauphin First United Church with Rev. Freda Rajotte officiating.

HELENA DOBRINSKY
HELENA DOBRINSKY (nee KUBARA) July 28, 1924 - February 22, 2002 With great sadness and sorrow our mother, baba and best friend passed away suddenly but peacefully at home. Our mother was born and raised in the North End of the city and later in married life moved to West Kildonan, where she remained except for the period between 1969 -1980. Due to her husband's (Speed) employment transfer with Air Canada, she lived in Montreal (Dorval), PQ. While living in Montreal our parents had many friends. They looked forward to dancing at the legion on Saturday nights, visiting friends and adventurous family drives exploring the city and countryside on weekends. In Winnipeg, she was a member for 50 years at Branch #141 Ukrainian Legion in the Ladies Auxiliary. This was where you would find our parents on weekends with their friends and family dancing and socializing. Mom was a member in the Senior Achievers Club till recent and had many caring family and friends from there. In recent years she also attended Fred Douglas Lodge day program each Tuesday. It was the highlight of her week. The activity workers ensured a supporting and fun environment. She had only missed a few times recently due to critical care needed but once well there was no question where she was going to be on Tuesdays. Our parents were married for 53 years. Dad passed away January 1995, and our mother was devoted to caring for him in his last years. Soon after his passing she battled and won over cancer while still mourning for him. Although various health problems continued to slow her down, she kept her chin up with no complaints to others. There was a determination to live independently to the best of her ability. Our mother, baba loved us all unconditionally. Always wanting to take care of us first before herself. As children, mom always welcomed new and various pets to our home even when they showed up unexpectedly. Mom also liked car drives, anywhere, exploring and sightseeing, stopping for picnics and going to the cottage and beach for the day if she was physically up to it. She enjoyed watching skating and curling on TV, most recently the Olympics. The day was not complete unless she read the newspaper from start to finish. Helena was predeceased by her husband Stephen (Speed) in January 1995; son Larry June 1958; parents, Anna and Michael Kubara; and brothers, John and William Kubara. Cherished and lovingly remembered by her children, Brian (granddaughter Jill), Douglas (Pam and grandchildren Laura and David), Dale Parkinson (Rick and grandchildren Kate and Tracy), Lori G. Warniski (grandson Colin). She is survived by her brothers, Michael and Eddy (Jennie) Kubara; sisters, Olga Andronick (Bill) and Emily Rose; sisters-in-law, Jean Kubara, Minnie Kubara, Evelyn Gabbs, Jean Dobrinsky, DeeDee Clark (Tom), Mabel Olynyk, Ann Bachman and Nerky McMillan; brothers-in-law Bill Dobrinsky (Nellie) and Fred Dixon (Norma) and many nieces and nephews. Thank you to various staff at the Seven Oaks Hospital who cared for our mother. To Richard Halavaros a respiratory technologist who's gentle manner comforted her. To Doctors and Nurses in Intensive Care which mom nicknamed The Angel Ward due to their professionalism and gentle caring manners and made her feel worthwhile and safe. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 28 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Chapel. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom's memory to the Seven Oaks Hospital Foundation, 2300 McPhillips St., Winnipeg, MB, R2V 9Z9. Mom's life was her family, for which no service or sacrifice was too great. We are honoured and proud to be her children and she will always be remembered. Rest in Peace If you think of me and cry, don't think of me at all. But if you think of me and smile, Think of me often. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
