DOLLY CALOF
August 28, 2004
DOLLY CALOF Dolly Calof, 88, died at her home, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Residence in Vancouver, BC on August 4, 2004. Dolly Pearlmutter was born on March 29, 1916 in the village of Irnik in the Province of Vilna in what was then Western Russia. She was the ninth of ten children of Wolfe and Miriam Pearlmutter and at her death was the last survivor of that closely knit family. In 1925 she emigrated to Canada with her parents and her three brothers to join four sisters already living in Calgary, AB. She met Sam Calof during a trip to Winnipeg in 1935. They were married on June 21, 1936. In 1947 they moved to Compton, CA with their two children, where they lived for four years, returning to Winnipeg in 1951. For the next twenty years they worked side by side in business, first opening Community Poultry Market in Winnipeg, and later operating hotels in Glenboro and Morden, both in rural Manitoba. In 1971 they moved back to Winnipeg where they were able to enjoy the company of family. They made frequent visits to Grand Forks, ND where their daughter, her husband and their three children lived. Sam Calof passed away in 1998. Dolly remained in Winnipeg until 2003 when, in declining health, she moved to Vancouver where her son and his family was living. For many years Dolly was active in Canadian Hadassah-Wizo, and was a life member and President of the Queen Esther Chapter. She was a member of the Rosh Pina Congregation and its Sisterhood. Dolly Calof will best be remembered by her family as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. Despite frail health in the year or two before her death and a devastating stroke that took away virtually all her speech in May 2003, she inspired those around her by remaining the friendly, kind, loving person she had always been, and she will be affectionately remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Myron and Ros-Lynn Calof of Vancouver, BC; her daughter Carol Palay of Phoenix, AZ; her five grandchildren, Cheryl, Steven and Russell Palay, and Joelle and Justin Calof; two great-grandchildren, Max and Madalyn Palay, and several nieces and nephews. Interment took place at the Rosh Pina Memorial Park in Winnipeg on August 8, 2004. Pallbearers were Dolly's grandchildren, Joelle, Justin, Steven and Russell, her grand daughter-in-law Margie Palay, and her beloved nephew Morley Greene of Vancouver. The family wishes to express their sincerest appreciation to all those who played such an important and loving role in Dolly's care and comfort over the past few years, including her nieces in Winnipeg Loretta Chochinov and Roz Shapiro, her niece Myrna Hudes in Toronto, Dr. Stan Lubin in Vancouver, her care companions Anna Oleksiw, Toni Popescu and Larysa Zhurikhina, and the wonderful nurses, care aids, and professional staff at The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Residence in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
