DONALD WORKMAN
August 30, 2004
DONALD LOUIS WORKMAN Suddenly, while doing what he loved best, gardening, Don passed away on August 25, 2004. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Sheryl and his seven children, Sean, Don (Shelly), Dan (Janet), David (Jane), Doug (Cheryl), Kathy (Rusty) and Michelle (John), 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson and his brother Bill. He was very proud of all of them. He also leaves to mourn his sisters-in-law Jo-Anne and Rilla, brothers-in-law Edward and Ted, four nephews, Mary Tracy and dear friends Brian and Marlene. Don was pre-deceased by his parents Arnold and Kathleen and one grandson. Don was born June 30, 1932 in Garrett, Kentucky and grew up in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. In 1951 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Hospital Corpsman, holding many medical assignments at hospitals and clinics along the East coast of the US. He saw much of the world while assigned to Navy ships and retired in 1970 with the rank of HM1. Don then went to work in Canada on the DEWLine and married Sheryl in 1974. In 1975 they were given the opportunity to go North together as the first husband and wife team to work on the DEWLine. Shortly after Sean was born, Don left the DEWLine, choosing to stay home and watch him grow. During that time there were lots of fishing trips, camping in the motor home and trips to the States to see the children and grandchildren. Don spent many, many hours gardening at The White House in Charleswood. He had a green thumb and could make anything grow. In addition to his love of gardening he also loved to bass fish and won many casting tournaments. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 1 at 11:00 am at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., (Aubrey Street entrance). Don's ashes will be interred at sea at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Friends of the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, Box 24017, 15 Conservatory Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3N 2B1, if friends so desire. NEIL BARDAL INC. Dad suffered a stroke six weeks previous and never recovered. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Hilda; children, Barb, Arlene, Cathie, Bryan and Kim; his grandchildren, Ian, Dallas, Tacsheana, Benjamin, Maggie, Katarina and Gabbrielle; sons-in-law, Roy and Albert; honorary daughter Tracy; as well as his many friends and family members who have shown their love and support to his family in this time of sadness and remembrance. Bob was predeceased by his parents; daughter Dona; his brother; three sisters; niece; and nephew. Dad's last days before entering the hospital were spent with his wife of 64 years of marriage, Hilda, at their cottage in Sandy Hook, MB.
