ELSIE THOMAS

August 07, 2004

ELSIE MARIA THOMAS (KETOLA, KNOX) It is with great sadness that we say good-bye to our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Auntie and Friend, Elsie Maria Thomas (Ketola, Knox). After a long hard fight she went to join the angels on Thursday, August 5, 2004, with her daughter at her side. Elsie was predeceased by her father Vaino Ilmarri Ketola, her brother Elmer (Coke) Ketola, her mother Lempi (Lepisto) Ketola, her husband Dave Knox and her brother Kino Ketola. She is survived by her son Dave (Randy) Knox of B.C., daughter Lisa (Knox) Bittner (Eric) of Winnipeg, granddaughter Serena Ketola of Manitoba and half sister Lillian Ketola of B.C. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends that meant a great deal to her. Elsie was born in Pointe du Bois, MB on October 6, 1927. She attended grade 12 in Teulon, MB. Graduated from teachers college and taught school in Milber Ridge. She attended business school, became a legal secretary and worked for the law firm of Mitchell Greene and Minuk, Montreal Trust, and then the Canadian Grain Commission until she retired in 1988. She was married in 1949 to Dave Knox and stuck with him in good times and bad until his death in 1986. She married in 1988 to Alf Thomas of Alberta. They enjoyed travelling the U.S. in the winters to ease her arthritis and even had a mobile home in Yuma, Arizona for a while. They moved to Lethbridge where she lived until her health forced her to return to Winnipeg in January 2003. She was able to spend 11 months in 2003 with her two grandchildren, the angels in her heart. In spite of her pain, she was able to enjoy planting flowers, picking chokecherries, making jelly and fishing. Mom loved to read, do both crossword and jigsaw puzzles and play crib. She had a passion for gardening and loved flowers and enjoyed travel and shopping. Most of all Mom loved us! She especially loved her two grandchildren. She has gone to heaven to be their guardian angel now and we will all miss her. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 11 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). Pallbearers will be six of her loving nephews, Kenny Ketola, Rod Ketola, David Ketola, Garth Hodge, Kevin Knox and Todd Knox. Interment will follow on site and then a gathering of family and friends will take place in the reception centre. Glen Lawn is located on a city bus route. Special thanks to the staff of Kildonan Personal Care Home, Leona Knox, Violet Fraser, Ruth Bittner, Patti Graham and our friends and family for their support this year. SID TREPEL

August 07, 2004

SID TREPEL It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sid Trepel on July 31, 2004. Sid was born in Winnipeg, MB on June 23, 1937. Sid leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Marilyn. They were married for 44 years and met when she was 16 years old. Sid also leaves to mourn his son Louis; his son Brent and daughter-in-law Brenlee; his daughter Sindee and son-in-law Albert; adored grandchildren, Skyler and Sierra Trepel and Emerson and Shayna Wilhelmer; his sister Izzy Ellerby and her three children, Lawrence (Brenda), Shauna and Jonathan; sister-in-law Beverley Moss and his many friends. Sid was predeceased by his parents, Sadie and Louis Trepel and his mother-in-law Ethel Moss (Mimsey). It is no secret as to what Sid thought of his wife, Marilyn. He always said he had the greatest wife in the world and loved her more each day. One of his favourite phrases was, 'My wife is my life.' Sid always credited Marilyn for his success in business and for his success in life. Sid loved his wife and family greatly. He also loved his loyal little animal friends - his schnauzers Fozdik and Farfel for 17 years, and then Floyd and Farah, were his constant companions. Even his licence plate read "F and F". Sid became President of Ben Moss Jewellers at the age of 26, Chairman at age 60, and Chairman Emeritus at age 65. Ben Moss, the founder, was Sid's father-in-law. Sid loved his business, Ben Moss Jewellers. Sid expanded the company from one store in Winnipeg, on Main Street, to stores throughout Canada. He loved the excitement and expansion of Ben Moss Jewellers. He also loved the jewellery business. His goal and dream of servicing customers across Canada were always number one to him. Sid was a true motivator and a powerful Chairman and CEO for Ben Moss Jewellers. He was loved and respected by his many staff and business contacts, though often referred to as quite a character. Sid had a strong rapport with his staff at Ben Moss Jewellers. He always believed that praise was a wonderful thing, that it encouraged people. Sid let people know when he was happy with their work. As Ben Moss Jewellers grew, so did Sid's pride in his lifelong achievement. Every award Ben Moss Jewellers received was a thrill for Sid. He was particularly pleased to receive mentions in the Tema Frank book, Canada's Best Employers for Women, and to receive the honour of being cited as one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies for six consecutive years, Innovative Retailer of the Year by the Retail Council of Canada; and Canadian Jeweller of the Year twice by the Canadian Jewellers' Association. Sid sat on the Board of Directors of Christians and Jews and the Stroke Association of Manitoba, was on the Board of Directors and President of the Sales and Marketing Executives, as well as Chairman of the Jewish Child Rescue. Sid became a member of the Young Presidents' Organization while he served as President of Ben Moss Jewellers and loved his involvement there as well. He was also a proud founding member of The Variety Club of Manitoba - the Children's Charity. Sid also assisted many organizations and individuals financially. He established a Canadian Charitable Fund for the Cleveland Clinic and was its first contributor. Sid loved being a YPOer. He found the entire experience very exciting. Sid had a major heart attack in 1981, followed by open heart surgery. Sid had a major stroke in 1984. Many people might have chosen to give up at this point, but not Sid. He always stressed the fact that he was a fighter and a winner. Sid helped anyone with a similar health crisis in any way he could and received many thanks for his helpful advice on by-pass surgery, or heart and stroke problems. He was only too happy to do it. He created his '5-Ds' and practiced these as he preached them - DRIVE, DESIRE, DETERMINATION, DEDICATION AND - DO IT!! Sid also became acquainted with a network of doctors over the years, be it in Winnipeg, at the Health Sciences Centre, or in Gimli, at Johnson Memorial Hospital. He never forgot the many doctors and nurses who tended to him. Sid had a wide network of friends from every background and occupation. He treated everyone equally well regardless of status in life. Sid was straight and to the point. He practised the motto - KISS - keep it short and simple. Sid was always a proud man and lived life "his way". Sid's request was that there be no shiva. Pallbearers were Donald Bass, Lawrence Ellerby, Jonathan Ellerby, Mel Lazareck, Hart Robinovitch and Jeff Stern. Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. Robert Corne, Donald Gales, Merv Moknowed, Richard Rice, Judge Charles Rubin, Dr. Fred Shane, and Tom Shimoji. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba - telephone 949-2000, 200-6 Donald St., R3L 0K6 or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, telephone 1-877-287-3533, 311-7100 Woodbine Ave., Markham, ON, L3R 5J2.

DENNIS WARD

August 07, 2004

DENNIS WAYNE WARD It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Dennis Wayne Ward on August 1, 2004 at the age of 57 years. Dennis is survived by wife Jane; sons, Kenneth (Jennifer) and Jeffrey; daughter Kimberley (Gerald); grandson Chase and grandson Connor, due later in August; sister Dale; and nephews, Robin (Christy) and Eric. Dennis was born in Winnipeg on September 15, 1946 and graduated as an accountant from the University of Manitoba. He married wife Jane in 1969 and they moved around to various cities in Western Canada to build his career. He returned to Winnipeg with his family in 1987 to rejoin the rest of his extended family. Over the past 20 years, Dennis volunteered most of his spare time during the winter to minor hockey. Funeral service will take place Saturday, August 7 at 12:00 noon at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Since Dad was allergic to flowers, the family requests that donations in his memory can be made in lieu to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 - 6 Donald St., Winnipeg R3L 0K6. DEAREST DAD AND GRANDPA The hardest thing in life to bear, To want you Dad and you're not there. With a broken heart we whisper low, We love you Dad and miss you so. As long as we live, we'll always be glad That we were your children and you were our Dad. Peacefully sleeping, resting at last, Your weary trials and troubles are past; In silence, you suffered, With such patience you bore, 'Til God called you home to suffer no more. "God be with you, till we meet again." CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

GWEN WATSON

August 07, 2004

GWEN WATSON (nee HOCKING) July 31, 1909 - July 30, 2004 Predeceased by her husband Fraser in 1968, her sister Jennie and brother Ralph. Survived by her five children and families, Brian and Phyllis, Dwight and Carole, Valerie and Jack, Toni and Jean-Claude, Sally and Bob; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Gwen was born in Perth, Australia in 1909. In 1918 her family moved to Victoria, BC where she distinguished herself in athletics and "fun". Always seeking adventure, in 1936 Gwen took a summer job at a resort in the Yukon. There she met her husband Fraser. Gwen and Fraser moved to Whitehorse, where they lived for 14 years - the happiest of their married life. During this time, their five children were born. Gwen, Fraser and the family moved to Winnipeg in 1950. Gwen stayed at home to raise her children and provide them with a supportive, loving environment, always stressing the need for education and ongoing learning. She was an avid reader and passed this love on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Following her children's marriages, Gwen became a world traveler, once again seeking adventure. Her travels took her to Europe, Russia, Great Britain, Australia, Florida, Mexico and South America. Gwen's family meant everything to her. They all love her dearly and were with her to the end, celebrating her wonderful life. The family would like to thank the staff of Kildonan Personal Care Home, 3rd floor, for the care and compassion they gave to Gwen over the past nine years. There will be a private family memorial service. Donations in Gwen's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, or to a charity of your choice.
