THELMA CHABOYER
July 23, 2004
THELMA ROSE CHABOYER Thelma was born in Port Nelson, MB, December 1, 1920 and passed away peacefully with family by her side on July 21, 2004. Thelma is loved deeply by family members and will live on in the spirits of those she leaves behind. She is the beloved matriarch of a family, which extends to five generations. Left to mourn her passing, but to celebrate her life includes her sister Louise Sinclair; children, Stan, John, Sandra, Raymond and Ronald; and grand-children, Stan, Joseph, Veronica, Laurette, Sharon, John Jr., Daniel, Michelle, Naomi, Michael, Ryan, Joel, Kristen and Benjamin; numerous nieces and nephews; great-grandchildren and even one great-great-grandchild were also a very special part of her life. Thelma was predeceased by her mother Jemima; husband Hans; sisters, Elizabeth, Eleanor; brothers, Dan, Horace, Colin, and Walter. Thelma was a member of York Factory Cree Nation and spent her formative years in northern Manitoba living a traditional Cree lifestyle. She held many jobs through her lifetime but spent the majority of her working years in Churchill where she raised her children. During this time she worked for the Harbour Board and the Department of National Defense on the army base in Fort Churchill. She began a new life with her children in Winnipeg in 1971 and worked hard as a single working mother struggling to make ends meet. Thelma's life was never easy, but she maintained a cheerful sunny disposition which drew people to her and found her many friends and admirers. Thelma loved animals and children and her house was usually a menagerie of cats, dogs and rabbits that her children brought home. Her happiest moments were spent preparing a delicious meal for the children in her life and watching the birds and animals around her at play. Her greatest sorrow was in not having more children and in not having the time to spend with her family due to her long working hours as a single mother. Thelma had little in the way of formal education but had an unusually sharp mind and a tenacious memory into her advanced years. She enjoyed reading the Bible and found strength in listening to Christian radio programs on a daily basis. Thelma had complete faith in the promise of resurrection and viewed death as a transition to the afterlife. Thelma also loved to travel and was happy that she was able to visit Canada from coast to coast to coast. She had an untapped adventurous side as evidenced by white water tubing in British Columbia at the age of 60. To celebrate Thelma's life a viewing will be held from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Friday, July 23 in the Chapel of Voyage Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 24 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel as well. Cremation will follow as per mom's wishes. Rest and be at peace now Mom, you're together again with your beloved mom, sisters and brothers. Memories of your warm happy spirit will be with us forever.
