CHRISTINA GRIEVE

July 10, 2004

CHRISTINA MAY GRIEVE Surrounded by the love of her family, in their hearts and at her bedside, our Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Christina, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2004 at Selkirk and District General Hospital. Mom was born on March 15, 1923, the first born of Colin and Ethel Leask. She lived on the family farm three miles west of Clandeboye, along with her parents and three sisters and two brothers. She attended school at Clandeboye until Grade 11 and then had to ride the train to Selkirk to complete her Grade 12. From there she attended Normal School in Winnipeg and began her teaching career in Southwest Manitoba. Mom and Dad were married on May 25, 1946 after Dad's return from overseas. They resided in the Clandeboye area and shortly after the birth of Wilma (Billie), they moved to Meadowdale. Here they operated The Ridgley Confections on No. 8 Highway. Their family grew by the birth of Elva, Judy, Ian and Sheila. During these times Mom ran the operation of the store, while raising her young family. Dad worked on the Hunter McRae farm from spring to late fall. These times left Mom alone with the five of us during these months. There were also times she was alone with us, as Dad was in Deer Lodge Hospital having some of his war wounds tended to. Dad then started driving the milk truck for the Interlake Farmers Coop. They then moved their family to Dunara to live. It was while here that Leonard and Dena arrived. During these years, times were tough, but Mom was a very conservative person and many small things went a long way. We always wore clothes that she had made with her tender loving care. Her family always came first and we could always count on her being there for us when lifes burdens would come upon us. During the loss of our Dad, Bertie, and our sister, Elva, she was our pillar of strength to lean on, even though she had her own grieving to do, the survivors were the benefit of her uplifting support in her own quiet manner. Mom was very active in any event or project that was going on in the community. You could always see her in the working ranks of the church, community club, 4-H. Wednesday quilting at the Municipal Office was a highlight of her winter months. She was an avid quilter and many of us have quilts she made for us. Fifty-eight of her handmade quilts have been given to sick children throughout Manitoba through the Lioness Project Group in Winnipeg. It warmed our hearts to know that she still had love to pass on to others in need. Mom's love of music was one of the reasons that provided her the quality of life she chose to live. Her final accomplishment was to participate in the Clandeboye Amalgamated United Church Christmas Contata which was performed numerous times at Clandeboye, Winnipeg Beach and at the Grace Hospital over recent years. Mom loved the Christmas season and her participation in the church choir helped her prepare for very meaningful and touching Christmas seasons spent with her family. Mom is survived by and will be sadly missed by her daughters, Wilma (Billie) Ratkowski and her husband Michael, Judy Dent and her husband Geoff, Sheila Peadson and her husband Larry, and Dena, and by her sons, Ian and his wife Darlene and Leonard and his wife Donna, her grandchildren, Christie Norman, Ian, Kent and Adam McConnell, Sheldon, Allan and Leslie Dent, Jill and Connor Grieve, Michelle Shier and Scott and Brett Peadson, Aaron and Tammy Wilson and her great-grandchildren, Janelle, Lisa, Taylor and Taiya. Mom also leaves to mourn her son-in-law, Randy McConnell and his wife Sue, her sisters, Evelyn Griffiths and Wilma Goodbrandson and her brother Allan Leask and his wife Jean, sister-in-laws, Louise Smith and her husband Howard, and Jean Grieve and her aunt, Julia McDonald. Mom was predeceased by her husband Bertie, her daughter Elva, son-in-law John Thurston, sister Gladys Swain, her parents Colin and Ethel Leask, brother Keith Leask, brothers-in-laws Johnny Goodbrandson, Dick Swain, Ken Griffiths and her nephew Jack Goodbrandson. Pallbearers will be her twelve grandchildren whom she was so very proud of and loved very much. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and thanks to Dr. Speer, the staff and the Palliative Care Unit at Selkirk and District General Hospital, Regional Health Authority for Selkirk area and to Mom's home caregivers, Cheryl, Karen, Sherry and especially Mabel, who was with Mom her four remaining days at home. To Auntie Evelyn and Auntie Wilma for their support and guidance and being with us through the last two months. To the church community and Rev. Lynn Stevens for all their prayers and visits to Mom and the family, as well as the gift of song by Rosalyn and Gordon Church, who came and sang for Mom. To all our extended families for their prayers and support and to Gilbart's Funeral Home for their professional service and guidance. In lieu of flowers friends may donate to CancerCare Manitoba, the Selkirk Palliative Care Unit or Clandeboye United Church Memorial Fund. Prayer service will be held on Sunday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, Manitoba. A celebration of her life will be held at Clandeboye United Church in Clandeboye, Manitoba on Monday, July 12, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Marilyn Anderson Corkum officiating. Please bring a lawn chair for your comfort during the service.

TERRY HATCH

July 10, 2004

TERRY A. HATCH (nee MILLER) Peacefully on July 7, 2004, at the St. Boniface Hospital, Terry Hatch passed away with family at her side. Mom will be forever lovingly remembered by her daughters, Gail Patricia and Gwen Barbara Hatch, her son Dr. Grant Michael Hatch (Shellie), and her grandchildren Laura, Karen and Derek Hatch. Terry is also survived by her brother Walt Miller, Calgary; her niece Laurie Raynaud (Raymond) Katie and Niki; her nephew Stuart Henrickson (Jackie) Samantha, Jennifer, and Sarah; and her niece Leslie Hale (Michael) Kim, and Darren. Terry was predeceased by her parents, Lydia and Michael Miller, her sister Virginia (Jean) Henrickson, her sister-in-law Margaret Miller, and her nephew David Miller. Terry was born in Zhitomir, Russia on July 19. The year is unimportant as she always remained "young at heart". She worked at Eaton's Mail Order until her marriage to Jim Hatch on September 17, 1949. Years later, circumstances and an incredible dedication to the well being of her family required her to change careers from a homemaker to a Sears Credit Officer. She became a member of and served as President of Credit Women International in 1971 and 1982, an opportunity that allowed her to travel to conferences and meet people from all walks of life. Terry was employed with Sears, Polo Park for over 25 years until her retirement in order to financially support her 3 children and mother. Times were tough but she endured with a positive attitude. She raised her children with unconditional love. Terry was a wonderful mother who helped her children achieve their dreams against all odds. She was proud of their accomplishments as a teacher, lawyer, and professor/researcher. Terry was a "gypsy" at heart and travelled extensively to all parts of the world from Australia, to Europe, Britain, Greece, and to her "heavenly paradise" of Hawaii. Terry treasured her friends and particularly enjoyed bowling, golfing, movies, and social outings with them. She was known for her famous hugs from the heart! During her illness, Terry appreciated the love she received from her friends through cards, letters, baking, flowers and gifts. Terry was a long time member of Sturgeon Creek United Church. She possessed a deep faith in her Lord which helped to sustain her during her illness. Gail, Gwen and Grant are grateful to Dr. John Foerster and his nurse, Thanh Ha, at the St. Boniface Hospital for their compassionate care. A celebration of Terry's life will be conducted on Monday, July 12, by Rev. Bill Corkum at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Street, at 1:00 p.m. A reception will be held at the Church. Interment will take place in Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations in Terry's name may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation. "Love never gives up; and its faith, hope, and patience never fail. Love is eternal". 1 Corinthians 13: 7-8 ALOHA MOM!!!

FREIDA JONES

July 10, 2004

FREIDA MARY JONES Peacefully on July 2, 2004 Freida passed away at The Grace Hospice in Winnipeg at the age of 72. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1988, her adoptive parents Forest and Sarah Hunt and her birth mother Phyllis Baker. She will be sadly missed by her children, Brian (Lesley), Valerie (Travers Fitzpatrick), Clifford (Patricia), and Bob (Sandra). She also will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Marcia, Tracy, Jennifer, Katharine, Sarah, Shannon, Jaclyn and Kelsey, her brother Fred and her sisters, Phyllis and Lillian and her great-grandchildren Kaleigh, Joshua, Ryan, Taylor and Meagan. Freida was born in Prescott, Ontario but spent her childhood on a farm in Iron Hill, Quebec. It was here that she met and married the love of her life John in 1949. Her early married life was devoted to the upbringing of her four children in Iron Hill and in Prescott, Ontario. Freida and John relocated to Toronto and Midland, Ontario where they established new friends and were active in the local community. At the age of 40, Freida went back to school and graduated from George Brown College before becoming a court reporter for several years. When John retired, they travelled the country in a motor home, fulfilling a lifelong dream and creating many more happy memories. They ultimately settled in Kelowna BC and after Johns passing, Freida lived in Kelowna and in Victoria and Sidney on Vancouver Island before coming to Winnipeg four years ago. Throughout her life, Freida's greatest joy was her family. If ever there was a person who saw the glass as "half full" rather than "half empty" it was Freida. She was an eternal optimist, a creative spirit and a woman of great faith who had an endearing sense of fun. She had a generous nature and made friends easily in the many places that she lived. A celebration of Freida's life will be held on Friday, July 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The family extends its deepest appreciation to Freida's longtime friend Shirley Wilson for her care and devotion and to the kind staff at the Victoria General Hospital and the Grace Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Hospice in Freida's name. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 McGillivray Blvd - 1-877-230-0438
