DOREEN LEA
June 11, 2004
DOREEN LEA (nee MOWAT) Suddenly on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, Doreen Lea of Matheson Island, MB, aged 69 years, passed away with her family by her side. Born October 4, 1934 at Selkirk. Doreen married Roland Lea of Pine Dock in 1953. They first settled in Little Point and then later moved to Matheson Island to raise their five children. Doreen's early years of employment, in addition to raising her children, included working on the S.S. Keenora, trapping, commercial fishing, community supervising, cooking for outpost camps in northern Manitoba and N.W.T. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She always had a cup of tea and her famous oatmeal cookies and dainties ready whenever visitors dropped by. She spent her free time baking, making crafts, knitting and crocheting. She loved to hear the fish stories told by Roland, her children and others. She enjoyed her time alone staying at her camp at nearby Black Fox Island. She decided to stay away from there, when the bears took over the camp. She was very outspoken and gave good advice or a good laugh when she did. She enjoyed assisting Roland in gardening, planting flowers and feeding the birds and squirrels (she disliked black birds). Doreen was predeceased by her parents Katie and Arthur Mowat; great-granddaughter Colette Ladouceur; brothers, Peter, Allan, Wallace, William, Arthur, Ivan, Percy; sisters, Priscilla, Esther and Nellie; sisters-in-law, Nora, Polly-Ann and Ruby; brothers-in-law, Victor and Russell. Doreen leaves to mourn her passing husband, Roland; children, Debbie, Brenda (Stan), Donna (Jeff), Doyle (Charlene) and Tim (Marilyn); grandchildren, Mona, Amber, Derek, Michelle, Cameron, Nicole, Justin, Matthew, Patrick, Jamie, Devin, Ryan and seven great-grandsons, Quentin, Rudy, Trevor, Cody, Matthew, Nicholas and Ashton. She will also be remembered by son-in-law Don Ladouceur; sister-in-law Allie Mowat; brothers, Harvey (Dorothy) and Tom; sister-in-law and special friend Laura Mowat; special friends, Eileen Johnson and Millie Bruce and special nieces, Cathy Cook, Janet and Mandy Bennett, Judy Eastman, JoAnne Flett, Wendy Monkman, Connie Smith and Edie Carlson, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and endless number of friends. Tea grannie will be forever remembered and missed by the youngest great-grandsons, along with everyone else. Prayers will be held on Friday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Cremation will follow Friday night's service and a memorial service will be held at Matheson Island Community Hall on Saturday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m. Neill Von Gunten will be officiating the prayers and services. A private service will be held at Black Fox Island at a later date. Thank you to Gimli Community Hospital, Dr. S.V. Patel, and Dr. Montoedi for all their medical assistance in the past. ROBERT MacLAREN
June 11, 2004
ROBERT GEORGE "BOB" MacLAREN February 8, 1920 - June 9, 2004 Mid afternoon, June 9, 2004 at the Victoria General Hospital, in Winnipeg only six weeks after the love of his life Chaddie died, Bob followed. Though he prevailed with wit and an ability to make others feel good, his final liberation from the demoralizing, frustrating and frightening effects of Alzheimer's was welcome. Born in Reston, MB, the youngest of six, he was predeceased by parents, Florence Isabel and Robert Alexander; brothers, Jack and Bill; and sisters, Helen and Marjory. He will be deeply missed by his surviving sister Florence Christie, who participated so selflessly in his care and well being as his health declined. Bob's family wishes to thank the Golden Door Geriatric Centre staff who took to him so readily, and shared laughter with him whenever possible. Also the nursing staff of Victoria General Hospital 4th floor South, for their compassion and respect to both Bob and his relatives. A member of The First Special Service Force in the Second World War, Bob, alongside other Canadians and Americans, put his life on the line to secure freedom for Europe and thereby security for those at home. Always to be honoured by stranger or friend. With a grin on their faces, 'Uncle Bob' will be remembered by his nieces and nephews, but no more greatly than by Doug Christie (Patty) and Bruce Christie (Lori) who were the fortunate recipients of many a joke and jab. As a Manufacturer's Rep., he travelled Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Lakehead for more than 25 years. He was held in the highest regard by every customer he dealt with and every salesman he travelled with. Summers at Clearwater Bay, golf and tennis enjoyed with friends, winters in Hawaii and more recently in Palm Springs, he and Chaddie enjoyed themselves and the people around them; for few who met them did not come away friends. Their sense of fun and joy was infectious. His son John will hold a memorial service followed by a reception starting at 3:30 p.m. on Monday June 14 at the Niakwa Country Club, 620 Niakwa Rd. Should friends wish, donations may be made to a fund established in memory of Robert MacLaren at the University of Manitoba. This fund will assist in the research and development of a cure for Alzheimer Disease.
