MARY KERR

2001-11-23

MARY MAGGIE HELEN HUNTER KERR It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Maggie Kerr, at the age of 80 years. Mum passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2001 at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre. Mum was born on October 13, 1921 in Winnipeg to Harry and Francesca Hunter (nee Hiller). She was born the youngest of three children in Winnipeg, where she attended all of her schooling. In 1943, she married Orrin Charles Charlie Kerr and in 1948, they moved to Emerson, MB and then in 1956, they moved to Dauphin. Mum was very artistic and creative as well as independent. She was an accomplished seamstress and created many costumes for the Travelers Parades in Dauphin. She also made clothes for all of her five children, including wedding gowns for her three girls which they wore proudly. As the grandchildren arrived, she made each of them a beautiful Christening Gown. Mum, along with a little help from Dad, used her artistic talents in painting Unit Badges representing the various units of the then membership of Dauphin Legion Brach #20. These are proudly displayed in the Legion Club Room to this day. Mum also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and embroidery and she passed these talents on to her children and grandchildren. She also taught Driver's Ed in the high school for many years and enjoyed it very much. She helped in the raising of her granddaughter Roslyn, made costumes and special birthday cakes, and could fix anything but a car. Her hobbies included reading and doing crossword puzzles as well as tending her flower garden. She took great pride in her flowers and was always adding one more plant. Her neighbours could always find Mum out in the yard, either just sitting in the shade under the trees, or working in the flower beds. Mum was predeceased by her husband Charlie in 1972, sister Florence Speaks, brother and sister-in-law Sydney and Toni Hunter, brother-in-law Harold Senn, infant grandson Aaron Zurba, and her parents. She leaves to mourn her passing five children, Orrin of Ottawa, ON, Susan of Edmonton, AB, Crystal (Harvey) Zurba of Dauphin, Douglas of Regina, SK, and Muriel (Larry) Safroniuk of Erickson, MB; 13 grandchildren, Naomi Zurba of Anchorage AK, Roslyn Kerr of Winnipeg, Leighton and Matthew Safroniuk of Erickson, Fiona and Michelle McPherson of Edmonton, Roric Kerr of Alberta, Jim Kerr of Calgary, AB, Colleen Sinkarson of Winnipeg, Amanda McLeod of Calgary, Amelia McLeod of Regina, Bethany Brochu of Regina, and Timothy Clinton of Churchbridge, AK; three great-grandchildren, Laura Ashley Sinkarson of Winnipeg, Danyl Acquah McLeod of Regina, and Destiny Delores Kallis of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Funeral service was held Thursday, November 22, at Sneath Strilchuk Funeral Chapel. Capt. Randy Gatza, of the Salvation Army, officiated and interment followed at the Riverside Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Larry Safroniuk, Bryce Amendt, Dave Bloomfield, Ralph Zurba Sr., Ralph Zurba Jr., and Steve Zurba. In lieu of flowers, friends who so desire, may make memorial donations to the Ileitis & Colitis Foundation or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
