Frank Grant Hay

Suddenly on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 Frank Hay,of Portage la Prairie formerly of MacGregor, passed away at the Portage District General Hospital. Frank Grant Hay was born in MacGregor Manitoba on July 11, 1922. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Janet Hay; brother Ted and sisters Margaret Burneski and Lorna Griffiths. He is survived by his beloved wife Mildred (Lamb); daughters Diane (Ross) Craddock of Ottawa, Patricia (Daryl) Cugnet of Winnipeg; sisters Lois Fotheringham of MacGregor and Muriel Simpson of Abbotsford; sister-in-law Pat Hay of Gatineau; grandchildren Melissa (Stephen) McHugh of Abbotsford and James Craddock of Vancouver; and, three great grandchildren Tyler, Jessica and Ryan McHugh. He will missed by his numerous nieces and nephews. Frank attended school in MacGregor and played hockey for Addie Bell (Southside Team) in his grade 11 year. At the end of that year he joined the Army and served in Holland, France, Belgium and Germany until VE Day. For the following two years Frank played hockey for the Harringay Racers in London, England. Following the death of this father, he returned to MacGregor to assume the position of Post Master, the third generation of the Hay family to be Post Master in Macgregor. He held that position until his retirement in 1983, which commemorated 86 years of family service to the community in the Post Office. Frank was a very active member of the community. He was a founding member of Lions Club and held several positions within that organization over the years, He was Secretary Treasures for the Community Centre and served on the MacGregor District School board, 9 years as Secretary Treasurer and 12 years a Board Member of the Pine Creek School Division. Frank was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, St James Branch. Frank was an avid sportsman who never lost his love of hockey. He closely followed baseball (attended spring training in Florida) and football (the Blue Bombers). He was also very active in curling and golf. He attended the Grey Owl Golf Tournament for the last 40 years and was a committee member from 1982. The family would like to express their deep felt appreciation for the great kindness and consideration of the Para Medics, RCMP and emergency medical staff at the Portage Hospital. Memorial Service will be held this Saturday, April 17, 2004 at MacGregor United Church, MacGregor at 2:00 pm with Rev. Quentin Robinson officiating. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Frank by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements.

Walter Hanishewski

With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Walter L Hanishewski at St. Boniface General Hospital, Winnipeg on Monday, April 12, 2004 at the age of 76 years. He was predeceased by his loving wife Marjorie Isobel (nee Green), his parents Joseph and Martha, step brothers Edward and Mike, and step sisters Anne, Bertha and Francis. Dad is survived by his daughters; Katherine Dennis (Glenn) of Portage la Prairie, Debbie (Wayne) Kozak of Calgary AB, Patty (John) Tkachuk of Menisino MB, Susan Hanishewski of Hamiota MB and Barbara Hanishewski of Minnedosa MB; his grandchildren Wayne, Courtenay, Stacey (Rob) and Andrew Dennis, Shannon and Krista Kozak, Jennifer and Bryan Fosty, Kelly and Nicole Tiller, Emily and Willow Tkachuk ; step grandchildren Jonathan and Shane Tkachuk, his sisters and brothers Josie of Regina, John of Edmonton and Elsie of Ottawa and many nieces and nephews. Dad was born May 17, 1927 in Buchanan, SK. At age 17 he left home to join the army. He started base training in Orillia ON and went to several bases before he was discharged after 6 ½ years. Dad did different things before joining the air force in Regina. Dad met Mom in 1954 and they married November 11, 1955. Together they raised 5 girls and lived in different bases. Comox was their last place before retiring after 23 ½ years of service with the Canadian Armed Forces. Dad and Mom moved back to Manitoba where they bought a house near Clanwilliam. In the early 90’s Dad and Mom traveled a lot. Their favorite spot was Hiking Trail- Edith Caval near Jasper Alberta. After Mom’s passing Dad moved to Zhoda, MB, then made a big change in his life. He bought a trailer and moved it to Paradise Village where he lived until his passing where he will be sadly missed. Dad will be remembered for his sense of humour and at times he could be stubborn. He loved to start an argument. Dad’s enjoyment was his family and he was a true “sport nut”. The family would like to thank Dr. Wong and the staff of St. Boniface Hospital for their understanding and special care. We would like to extend sincere gratitude to all home care providers and to the people who lived near him, who visited or checked on him. Also to Alice a big thank you for doing his cleaning and odd jobs since we were not close by. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 16, 2004 at St. Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church, Portage la Prairie at 1:30 pm with viewing prior to the service. The Rev. Norman Collier will lead the service. Interment is to follow at the family plot in Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Walter’s memory to Sunset Palliative Care, Inc., Box 92, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, R1N 3A7 or Cancer Care Manitoba c/o St. Boniface General Hospital, 409 Tache, Winnipeg, Mb R2H 2A6. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Walter by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements.

Andrew (Andy) Stewart

Andrew (Andy) Stewart, age 69, husband of Martha (Mabel) Stewart died peacefully on Friday, April 9, 2004 after losing a brief fight against cancer. Andy was born on March 10, 1935 in Broomhouse, Scotland. He was the fourth son of George and Annie Stewart. He emigrated to Canada in 1968 and was employed at Manitoba Development Center as a Psychiatric Nurse. He retired in 1992. Following retirement he spent his summers at TJ’s Landing Campground and his winters in Bullhead City, Arizona. His final wish was to celebrate his birthday in Bullhead City and then drive back to Manitoba. That wish was fulfilled. He was predeceased by his father George, mother Annie, and brothers George, Robert and John. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Mabel of Portage la Prairie; son Andrew (Allyson) and children A.J. and Eryn all of Stonewall; daughter Kathryn Olson and children Daniel and Corey all of Portage la Prairie; son Matthew (Cindy) and their son Taylor all of Beausejour and brother Jim (Ellen) Stewart of England. Also very special to him was his niece Susie (Rob) Voesenek and children Victoria, Kaitlyn, Rebecca and Robert all of Bagot and long time family friend Colin and Anne Whitehurst and family of Winnipeg. He will be fondly remembered by many friends in Arizona, Portage and numerous relatives in Scotland. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church, 102 3rd Street S.E., Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on Wednesday, April 14th at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Ken Harris officiating. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Sue Price of Sunset Palliative Care and Dr. Jim Price for the their care of Andy. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Andy’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8 or to Sunset Palliative Care, Inc., Box 92, Portage la Prairie,Manitoba, R1N 3A7. Thomas H. Howe

Peacefully with family at his side, Thomas Howe passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at Portage District General Hospital at the age of 88 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary Helen (nee Bindas), parents Bill and Rose Howe, infant son, brothers and sister Bill, Alva, Jim Fred, George and brothers Richard and Tom both in their childhood. Tom will be lovingly remembered by his children all of Portage la Prairie; Beverley Howe, Sharon Beddome, Tom (Jocelyn) Howe and Richard (Brenda) Howe along with 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. He also leaves behind his two sisters Jessie Lees of Calgary and Margaret Harris of Winnipeg. Dad was born in Oakland, Manitoba on January 1, 1916 and has lived most of his life in Portage la Prairie. Tom’s family was very important to him and he enjoyed his time spent with his children and their families. He also valued his friends and could be found visiting with them at the Wright Spot. He was an active member in the Royal Canadian Legion #65 and the Oddfellows. And in his spare time he enjoyed gardening and fishing. “ A special smile, a special face And in our hearts, a special place Deep are the memories, precious they stay No passing of time can take them away. Forever missed and loved.” Friends and family may have a time of visitation at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Monday evening, April 12, 2004 at 7:00 pm A Service to celebrate Tom’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 3:00 pm at Trinity United Church with The Rev Norman Collier officiating. Terrance John Campbell
March 19 1947 – April 3, 2004

Suddenly on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at his residence in Vancouver BC, Terry Campbell, beloved son of Sarah and the late Jack Campbell, passed away at the age of 57 years. Terry grew up in Portage la Prairie. As a teenager his first love was music and while at school got his first break at CFRY. He attended Portage Collegiate Institute where he earned the Governor General Award in both grades 11 and 12. After high school he attended the University of Manitoba. Terry’s knowledge of the arts was almost encyclopedic and his passion made him want to share his knowledge with anyone who would listen, and listen they did. Terry was a very successful broadcaster with CBC for many years, choosing and sharing his classical music, delighting his fans daily. Terry once was quoted as saying “I am naturally gregarious. It is total joy to meet and talk to musicians. You can’t interview a compact disc!” In 1992 Terry moved to Dallas. Intermittently he returned to Canada to do hostings at various radio stations across the country. Anyone who knew Terry will attest to his wonderful wit, razor sharp intelligence and above all his kindness. Terry was a very loving, caring person. Both people and animals gravitated to him and he had a special group of friends. Terry was predeceased by his father Jack and is survived by his mother Sarah and will be sadly missed by all those who loved him. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 1:30 pm with Rev. Marg Scott officiating. Interment is to follow at Beaver Cemetery, Beaver, Manitoba. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Terry by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements.

Hugh Peters
November 18, 1934 - April 4, 2004

Hugh Peters was an Ojibway, born on the Long Plain First Nation at the Peters homestead on November 18, 1934 and entered into the spirit world April 4, 2004 at the place of his birth. Hugh was predeceased by his loving father Wallace Peters in 1993, loving mother Helen Peters (nee Myerion) in 1994, brothers Rudy in 1948, Robert in 1972, Roy in 1972, Eddie in 1999, daughter Donalda Jean in 1962 and grandson Sheldon Kelly in 1991. Hugh is survived and will always be remembered by his brothers and sisters Norman Peters (Linda), Ronnie Peters (Mary), Kenneth Peters, Grace Fontaine (Martin) and Doreen Blackbird (Hank). Hugh is also survived by his wife Yvonne Peters (nee Laporte),most cherished children Charlyn, Miranda, Buffy (Darren) and Beverly, partner Lisa Delorme and step daughters Kim, Liz, Terry, Joanne, Arlene and Shirlene. Hugh also leaves in passing 20 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and a special pal Jason Peters. At the age of seven Hugh began his schooling at the Portage Indian Residential School, at age 16 he returned to Long Plain to help on the family farm. In 1957 Hugh began a family tradition of working on the railroad where he remained until his retirement. Hugh had a strong work ethic and gained the respect of his family and friends for his good-natured character and sense of humor which will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Hugh had a passion for life and was brought up in the time honored traditions and customs of the Ojibway people. He enjoyed the many trappings of contemporary life participating and excelling in the sports; hockey, baseball and boxing. In his twilight years he enjoyed the pastimes of playing pool, cribbage and sports select. Hugh’s greatest love was what a father could give to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hugh will always be remembered and honored for the time he devoted to his family. Traditional wake will be held at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 4:00 pm. Traditional funeral service will be held at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge on Friday, April 9, 2004 at 12:00 noon. Burial to take place at Dauphin Myerion Historical Cemetery. THOSE WHO HAVE A FATHER TREAT HIM WITH CARE YOU WILL NEVER KNOW THE HEARTACHE UNTIL HE IS NOT THERE. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Hugh by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements.

Terrance John Campbell

Suddenly on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at his residence in Vancouver BC, Terry Campbell, beloved son of Sarah and the late Jack Campbell, passed away at the age of 57 years. Funeral arrangements are pending. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Terry by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements.
