Steven Brunke

1989-2009

Following an automobile accident, the death of Steven Charles Brunke, 19, of Cambridge-Narrows, NB, occurred on Monday, June 15, 2009. He was the son of Patrick and Lorie (Ward) Brunke. Steven was born in Toronto on December 3, 1989.

Steven is survived by his parents; sister Stephenie and Ben Dykeman and their son Dylan of Jemseg; maternal grandparents Ken and Alice Ward of Cambridge-Narrows; step sister Jennifer Vardy of Ontario; aunt Marjorie and Billy Lane of Ontario; uncle Tim and aunt Cheryl Ward of Cambridge-Narrows; girlfriend Kendall Ryan of Cody’s and several cousins and friends.

The family will receive visitors at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. A celebration of Steven’s life will be held from Sherwood’s Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009.

Donations to the Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit or the memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.

Erma Gilchrist

1936-2009

The death of Erma Ruth Gilchrist, age 72, of Norton, NB, occurred at the Sussex Health Centre on June 19, 2009. The wife of Jim Gilchrist and the daughter of the late Gordon and Ruth (Reid) Tays, she was born in Passekeag, NB, on September 28, 1936.

Erma was the first daughter for Gordon and Ruth (Reid) Tays. She grew up in a family of eight children on a farm in Passekeag. She graduated from Sussex Regional High School and went on to complete a year at Normal School in Fredericton, following in her mother’s footsteps to become a school teacher. She continued with her teaching career for over 34 years and enjoyed several years of retirement.

Erma married James Gilchrist of Midland on July 28, 1962. They moved to Norton in June 1964, where they have since lived their lives. Their daughter Colleen Ruth, was born on May 31, 1965. Their first son James Christopher was born on November 12, 1966. Their third child Robert Gordon was born on December 15, 1968.

She spent her life as a wife, mother and grandmother dedicating herself to her family. She loved time spent with family and was always planning gatherings, cooking and baking for days in preparation. Her grandchildren Matthew, Jonathan, Joshua, Cole, Hannah and Claire held such a special place in her heart. She always took an interest in their lives and involved herself in as many of their activities and celebrations as possible. Visits with “Grandma” were special.

Erma was very involved in her church, St. Andrew’s United in Norton. She was active in many groups and kept busy with crafts, knitting, baking, sewing, gardening and traveling.

Erma will be greatly missed by all.

Erma is survived by her husband; daughter Colleen and Wayne Winchester of St. Stephen; sons Jamie and Donna Gilchrist of Norton, Rob and Paula Gilchrist of Ottawa, ON; grandchildren Cole, Hannah, Claire, Matthew, Jonathan, Joshua; sisters Thelma Bowes, Marilyn and Mark Witt; brothers Gordon and Pat Tays, Allison Tays; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister Lorna Luttrell; brothers Harold and Donald.

Resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, from St. Andrew’s United Church, Norton. Interment will follow in Riverbank Cemetery.

Donations to St. Andrew’s United Church, the Arthritis Society or the memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.

Irene Campbell

1931-2009

The death of Irene Dorothy (Ross) Campbell, age 78, wife of the late Cyril Campbell of Norton, NB, occurred at the residence of her daughter, on June 22, 2009. She was born on May 8, 1931, in Southfield, NB, the daughter of the late John and Marion (Hosford) Ross.

Irene grew up in Southfield where she went to school and met her husband Cyril Campbell. After the wedding they moved to Norton, raised their 3 children and lived out the remainder of their lives.

Even with failing health over the years, her never ending faith helped her maintain her strong will and a positive attitude. She enjoyed spending time with her family and close friends and they in turn appreciated her endearing sense of humor and loyalty.

She will be dearly missed by all that knew her.

Irene is survived by her daughter Valerie and Tom Daly of Quispamsis; sons Rick and Teresa of Texas, Ron and Lori of Saint John; special family member Bill and Mary Taylor; grandchildren Tom, David, Christine, Shannon, Kelly, Scott, Tanya, Adam, Ben, Jeremy, Alysha; great grandchildren Laiken, Ryan, Haily, Morgan, Josh, Tommy, Brook, Taylor, Brad, Mark, Jessica, David, Briyah, Danielle, Brandon, Marek, Nicole, Cody, Adam, Alyson; step great grandchildren Kirk, Courtney, Kaylon, Jerimiah, Josh; sisters Mabel Mackereth of Toronto, Evelyn Gillcash of Mission, BC, Dora Reicker of Kiersteadville; brother Donald of Norton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers Melvin and Ralph.

She is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held from St. Andrew’s United Church, Norton, NB, at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009. Interment will follow in Riverbank Cemetery.

Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the memorial of donor’s choice would be appreciated.

Calvin Armstrong

1933-2009

The death of Calvin Thompson Armstrong, age 75, husband of Phyllis (Urquhart) Armstrong of Sussex, NB and formerly of Belleisle, NB, occurred at Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sussex, NB, on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. He was born on September 2, 1933 in Belleisle, NB, the son of the late Fred and May (Northrup) Armstrong.

Calvin was born in Belleisle and moved to Springfield with his family when he was a young teen. He met his future wife, Phyllis, at the one-room schoolhouse they both attended in Springfield.

By 1955, Phyllis and Calvin had married and moved to Ottawa, where they lived for almost 40 years. But by the time Calvin retired at 55, the call of Bull Moose Hill was too much to resist. So in 1994, about 30 years after buying their dream retirement property atop Bull Moose Hill, Calvin and Phyllis moved into their new home.

Not long after his stroke in December 2004, Calvin moved into the Kiwanis Nursing Home.

Calvin is survived by his wife; sisters Gladys Wies, Florence and Jack Duffy, Faye and Bill Pearson, Barbara and Ashley Milburn; brother William and Gale Armstrong; sister-in-law Eleanor Armstrong; brother-in-law Doug Defazio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Pauline Defazio; brothers James and his wife June and George.

Resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Trinity Anglican Church, Springfield, NB at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009. Interment will follow in St. Simon and St. Jude’s Anglican Cemetery, Belleisle Creek, NB.

Muriel Albert

1919-2009

The death of Muriel Idella (Miller) Albert, age 90, occurred at the Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sussex, NB, on Monday, June 29, 2009. She was the wife of the late Allan H. Albert of Stewarton, NB. She was born in Ratters Corner, NB, on January 7, 1919, the daughter of the late William and Jennie (Holmes) Miller.

Muriel is survived by son Joe and Diana of Springfield; daughter Betty Taylor of Sussex; grandchildren Ella May and Phil Connors of Sussex, and Allan and Laura Albert of Springfield; great grandchildren Kathleen and Megan York; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother George and sister Kathleen Miller.

Resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Sherwood’s Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2009. Earl McGinnis

1922-2009

The death of Earl McGinnis, age 86, of Norton, NB, occurred at home on Tuesday, June 30, 2009. He was the loving husband of Beatrice (Given) McGinnis. Earl was born in Southfield, NB, the son of the late John and Annie (Campbell) McGinnis, on October 23, 1922.

Earl is survived by his loving wife of 63 years and five children Eugene and Joan, Bloomfield, Austin and Jan, Sussex, Anita and Richard Pollock, Norton, Lorena and Leonard Roy, Norton, and Sherry McGinnis and Glen Gray, Midland; his twelve grandchildren who were his pride and joy Lisa and Greg, Cheryl and Jason, Barry and Nicole, Jamie and Melissa, Darren and Tricia, Shannon and Taylor, Leanne, Tara, Kayla, Michelle, Nicole and Mackenzie; six great-grandchildren Blake, Brianna, Addison, Sera, Abby and Avery; brother Gerald and Doris of Southfield; sister Doris Monahan of Norton; sisters-in-law Eunice and Stan O’Donnell of Norton and Catherine McGinnis of Rothesay; as well as many special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Agnes and Ruth; brothers Willie and Joe.

Earl was employed by CNR for 34 years. Earl’s great passion in life was hockey, his forever cherished Montreal Canadiens and his “Norton Kings”, and all his faithful players that he coached for over 30 years. His second passion was music, he will forever be remembered for his wonderful rendition of “Waltz Across Texas”.

Resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Norton, on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery followed by a reception at the Parish Hall

Anyone who was ever a part of the Norton Kings Teams is welcome to be a part of the Honor Guard at Earl's funeral on Saturday.

Jennie Smith

1926-2009

The death of Jennie Matilda (Forgrave) Smith occurred at her residence in Lower Millstream, NB, on Wednesday, July 1, 2009. She was born in Southfield, NB, on January 11, 1926, the daughter of the late Robert and Elvida (Ross) Forgrave.

Jennie is survived by her companion Gordon Smith; sister Irma Burnside of Nauwigewauk; brothers Allen and Mabel Forgrave of Lower Millstream and Otty and Sandra Forgrave of Southfield; sisters-in-law Marjorie Forgrave and Evelyn Forgrave both of Belleisle; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Isaac E. Smith; infant sister Charlotte; brothers Thomas and Nelson; cousin Gordon Ross.

Mary Tays

1935-2009

The death of Mary Elizabeth (Mercer) Tays, age 74, wife of Murray W. Tays of Passekeag, NB, occurred at her residence on Saturday, July 11, 2009. She was born in Southfield, NB, on June 5, 1935, the daughter of the late Charlie and Janie Mercer

Mary is survived by her husband Murray; daughters Muriel and Myles Mercer, Collina, Linda and Phillip Mercer, Bloomfield, and Shelley and Raymond Mercer, Bloomfield; sons Arnold (Hannah) Tays, Port Hope, ON, Ronald and Joan Tays, Passekeag, and Joseph and Jean Tays, Passekeag; 19 grandchildren David, Amie, Rachel, April, Naomi, Jamie, Kris, Luke, Beth, Ginny, Arnold Jr. Robert, Keith, John, Crystal, Carl, Nicole, Joshua, and Amanda; 18 great grandchildren John, Jessica, Samantha, Alisha, Julia, AJ, Mikayla, Cameron, Maximus, Juliette, Sophia, Gracey, Noah, Isaiah, Chelsey, Dustin, Dave Jr. And Noah; brothers Clayton and Muriel Mercer, Southfield, Victor Mercer, Southfield, Nelson and Heather Mercer Southfield; sisters Vera Dunham, Havelock, Evelyn and Walter Hayes, Jeffries Corner , Patricia Grant, Southfield Road, Angela and Donald Murphy, Southfield Road, Ida and Bernard Virtue, Southfield, Sheila Nodwell and Dale Dyer, Collina; sister-in-law Shirley Mercer, Southfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by son Carl; brothers Lester and Lawrence.

Gil Martin

1950-2009

Gil “Buff” took his last ride on his beloved Harley on a sunny Saturday morning near his home in Springfield. He passed away at the Saint John Regional on the evening of Saturday July 11th from injuries sustained during an accident. Gil is survived by his wife Wendy (nee Merrithew) of 32 years and his children Janelle (Adam), Ryan, Jason and five grandchildren. Also survived by his father, Sandy Martin; two sisters, Denise (Eric “Kick”) McIntyre, Micheline Martin (Réal LeBoutillier); brother Stéphane (Lorina); all of Baie Ste. Anne, NB; and several nieces and nephews. Gil was predeceased by his mother Evangeline. Gil was larger than life. Always ready with a joke or a story, he touched many with his laughter.

Condolences can be offered from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 17th at the Belleisle Community Centre (1648 Route 124 Springfield, NB). If you share Gil’s love of Harley Davidsons, bring your bike and be part of a procession to honour his life. Meet at Gil’s house (1607 Route 124) at 5:30 p.m. and the group will proceed to the Belleisle Community Centre. A celebration of Gil’s life will be held at the Centre from 6:00 p.m. until close. Bring your memories, stories and musical instruments to share with Gil’s family and friends. Gertrude Belding

1931-2009

It is with deep sadness we announce the death of our mother, Gertrude Elizabeth (Trecartin) Belding, age 78, of Cassidy Lake, NB, wife of the late Donald C. Belding. Due to complications of surgery at the Saint John Regional Hospital, on July 20, 2009, Mom passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Saint John, NB, on July 17, 1931, the daughter of the late Harold and Addie (Northrup) Trecartin.

Mom is our rock, and will be greatly missed and forever remembered by daughters Sherri and Hedley Vail, Midland, Katrina Balemans, Saint John, Lynn Wilson, Sussex, Dianne Belding, Southfield, and Beverly and Gary Glenn, Welsford; sons Stephen Belding, Amherst, NS, and John Belding, Saint John; grandchildren Angela, Allerliefste, Francisca, Bale, Adam, Stephanie, Elizabeth and Christopher; great grandchildren Khyleigh and Joseph; sister Evelyn and Ken Bradley, Saint John; sisters-in-law Alta Trecartin, Saint John and Winnifred Trecartin, Red Head; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by brothers Ralph, Edward and Raymond Trecartin.

The family will receive visitors at Sherwood’s Funeral and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, on Friday, July 24, 2009 from 2 to 5 p.m. A private family interment will take place in Hampton Rural Cemetery, Hampton, NB.
