Laurence Lee (Bud) Green
Laurence Lee (Bud) Green 73; of Grand Harbour, passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital after a brief illness on Wednesday morning, March 4th. Born at Grand Harbour he was the son of the late Archie and Elva ( Dakin ) Green. Mr. Green was a retired fisherman. He is survived by his wife at home Gwendolyn ( Bagley ) Green, one daughter Janene Green, two sons Merton ( Victoria ) Green and Justin Green all of Grand Manan. Three sisters Lona Urquhart, North Head, Shirley ( Donald ) Parker, Grand Harbour, Doris ( Theodore ) Huckins, Woodwards Cove, and three Grand Children. Mr. Green was predeceased by one daughter Lorena Mae, one sister Lila Harris, and one half brother Merrill Dakin.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Ells Funeral Home, Thursday, 2-4, 7-9 PM . The funeral service will be held from the Grand Harbour Baptist Church on Friday, March 7th, at 1:30 PM with Rev. Troy Dennis officiating. Louise Ruth (Ingersoll) McLaughlin
Louise Ruth (Ingersoll) McLaughlin, 91; of Seal Cove, Grand Manan passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital on Thursday evening, February 27th, 2003, after a breif illness. Born in Seal Cove, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Menerva ( Benson ) Ingersoll of Woodwards Cove, N.B. Louise and Laurence were wed on Grand Manan Island, living in Saint John during the War years. Due to the illness of one of their sons they moved to Boston, Mass. Later they settled and worked in Nobleboro, Maine. In later years during retirement they returned home to Grand Manan and settled in Seal Cove. Louise was an avid reader and she enjoyed people, discussions on any topic, and certainly will be missed by many.
Louise is survived by one daughter Lauren ( Rev. James ) McLaughlin-Butler, Saint John, N.B., Eleven grand Children, ten Great Grand Children as well as several neices and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Laurence Donald, two daughters Thelma and Carolyn, three sons Francis, Cameron and Anthony, two sisters Zelma, and Marie, three brothers Leonard, Nelson (Johnnie), and a twin brother in infancy.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Ells Funeral Home, Grand Harbour on Saturday 2-4 PM, 7-9 PM, The funeral service will be held at the Seal Cove United Baptist Church, on Sunday, March 2nd, 2003 at 1.PM with Rev. Robert Trites officiating. An interment service will be held at a later date in the spring at Hillside Cemetery, Seal Cove, N.B. Alta C. Ingersoll
After a brief illness Mrs. Alta C. Ingersoll of Seal Cove, Grand Manan Island passed away Saturday May 17th, 2003 at the Grand Manan Hospital, she was 87.
Born on Wood Island she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leland and Clara Wilcox. Mrs. Ingersoll was a member of the Seal Cove Wesleyan Church and also worked at the Connors Brothers Sardine Factory in Seal Cove for many years. She is survived by her husband Mr. Blake Ingersoll, two daughters Nancy Ingersoll of Seal Cove, NB, Lorna Cleghorn of St. Stephen, NB, two sons Larry (Audrey) Ingersoll of Edmonton AL, Verdi Ingersoll of Grand Harbour, NB. Four sisters Mrs. Ester Allen of Blacks Harbour NB, Mrs. Kathleen Wilcox of Pennfield NB, Mrs. Lydia Parker of Castalia NB, and Mrs. Ella (Bev) Cary of Woodwards Cove NB, and four Brothers Mr. (Baker) Manson (Helen) Wilcox of Port Maitland NS, Rev. Walter (Alva) Wilcox of Moncton NB, Mr. Lester (Betty) Wilcox of Pennfield NB, and Mr.Willis (Thelma) Wilcox of Seal Cove NB. Nine Grand Children, ten Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ingersoll was predeceased by one son Dennis.
Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home Monday from 2-4 & 7-9pm and the Funeral service will take place from the Seal Cove Wesleyan Church Tuesday May 20th, 2003 with Rev. Ward McComiskey officiating and Rev. Kirk Perry assisting, internment to follow in the family plot at the Spruce Grove Cemetery.

Ross H. Russell
Well know local businessman, Mr. Ross H. Russell of Castalia, Grand Manan, passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital Saturday June 14th, 2003. Born in Harrington Cove, Grand Manan on January 17th, 1917 he was the son of the late Edgar and Alma (Joy) Russell. He attended school in Deep Cove and Seal Cove, Grand Manan and in 1935 began work as the youngest commission agent of the time for Jones Schofield, Hatheway, Canada Packers and Royal Fruit Companies, covering the territory of Grand Manan, Campobello and Deer Island.
In 1941 he joined the active army, serving in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp until his discharge as Staff Sargent in 1946. In 1945 he married Theodora Griffin and the following year they returned to Grand Manan, where he opened a service station under the name Russell’s Sales and Service. In 1951 he purchased a second property on the island and opened a Western Tire and Auto associate store, later incorporated as Ross H. Russell Limited, one of the island’s largest retail outlets for many years. In 1954, due to illness, he sold the service station to the Irving interests. He continued to operate the general store until 1968 when he closed the business and became the representative for Willet Foods,
Canada Packers and Sussex Poultry. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1987.
In retirement he led an active and varied life, working occasionally in sales, frequently serving as an advisor to many local business-people and caring for his home and properties. Throughout his life he was also and active investor in real estate on the island.
Never one to be idle, he often said his work was his hobby, yet he made time in his life for his church, family and community. He was a member of the North Head Wesleyan Church and was its Sunday School Superintendent and Vice Chairman of the Board for many years. He also served as the Church Board Secretary and Treasurer in the late 1980's and early 1990's. He was a member of the Board of School Trustees for School District 22 and a member of the Board of the Grand Manan Hospital and interim Administrator of the Hospital as well. He had also served on the Castalia Local Service District Council and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 44.
He is survived by his wife, Theodora, one son, Brian Ross Russell of Washington D.C., one daughter, Shelley Thomson of Petitcodiac, N.B., for grandchildren, Russell, Justine, Kathleen and Nadine, his sister in law Helena of North Head, an aunt, Mrs Beryl MacGregor and her daughter Joan Hayes of Saint John and six cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Ron.
Visiting hours will be held at the North Head Wesleyan Church Monday from 2-4 and 7-9pm, from where the funeral service will take place Tuesday June 17th, 2003 with Rev. Charles Bain officiating and Rev. Stuart Steves assisting. Internment to follow at the family plot in the North Head Community Cemetery. At the request of the family donations may be made to the North Head Community Cemetery, Cancer Society, or the North Head Wesleyan Church..

Gerald Burpee Hunter
Gerald Burpee Hunter 76, of 2199 Route # 776, Deep Cove, Grand Manan, N.B. passed away unexpectedly at the Grand Manan Hospital on Wednesday morning, July 16th, 2003
Born at Hunter Lake, Saint John, N.B. he was the son of the late Frank and Mabel ( Smith ) Hunter of Hunter's Lake, N.B.
Mr. Hunter was retired.
He was the proprietor of Hunter's Garage, Seal Cove, and Cliff By The Sea Cottages, Deep Cove, N.B. Mr. Hunter will be fondly remembered by many students of the Grand Manan School system as he was a School Bus Driver for many years.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 54 years, Maude Alva (Wilcox ) Hunter, Deep Cove., two daughters Joyce Marie Harten ( Richard ) of Moncton, Anna-Lisa Vandenberghe ( Stephen ) of London, Ont. One sister Carol- Nina MacLean ( Hazen ) of Hunter Lake, N.B. Four brothers Allen ( Adele ) of Kanata, Ont, Marven ( Jean ) of Kelona, B.C. Donald ( Pearl ) of Hunter Lake, N.B. Carl (Linda) of Bloomfield, N.B. Five Grand Children, Two Great Grand Children as well as several neices and Nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother Royden (Mariam ) Hunter, of Saint John, N.B.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Ells Funeral Home, Grand Harbour, on Thursday, 2-4, 7-9 PM, Friday 2-4, 7-9 PM.
Funeral service will be held at the Grand Manan School Auditorium, Grand Harbour on Saturday, July 19th at 1:30 PM.. Interment will take place in the family plot Maple Grove Cemetery.

Barbara Rosemary Small
BARBARA ROSEMARY SMALL, 63; The death of Barbara Rosemary Small,63, of Castalia, N.B. occurred at the Atlantic Health Science Centre Palliative Care Unit, Wednesday, August 6,2003.
Barbara was the cherised mother of warren Spires (Leslie), Milton, Ont., and Adam Spires (Petra), Lethbridge, Alberta and grandmother to Scott, Shannon, Quinn, Neil and Kelvin. She will also be sorely missed by her mother, Marjorie Small (Leon), Castalia, N. B., her sister, Carmen Roberts (Peter), Seal Cove, N. B. and several aunts, uncles, cousins and two nephews.
She was predeceased by her father, Leon Small, and a beloved son, Leon Spires.
Barbara loved children and taught Sunday School 7 years, coached Little League Baseball 10 years and was a school bus driver for 28 years, where all her children were special to her. She was a member of St. Andrews & St. David's United Church, Saint John, N. B. and for the past 5 years was largely responsible for the rebirth of the Castalia United Baptist Church Summer Services. Her clear alto voice could be heard with various choirs and musical groups.
She played many instruments and for several years performed with the Saturday Night Jamboree and with Aubrey Hanson on CFNB, Fredericton, N. B. Barbara played softball for many years and was an avid fan of the Montreal Expos.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Ells' Funeral Home, Grand Harbour, N.B. on Monday, August 11, 2003 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.. The Memorial Service will be held from St. Paul's Anglican Church, Grand Harbour on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. William Randall, Rev. Howard Anningson and Kevin Frankland officiating.
Interment to follow in the family plot Maple Grove Cemetery, Hill Rd., Grand Manan, N. B. At Barbara's request any donations may be made in her memory to Cherry Brook Zoo, Saint John Rescue League or Grand Manan Library for children's books.

Elizabeth L. McLaughlin
After a lengthy illness Mrs. Elizabeth L. McLaughlin passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital Thursday September 4th, 2003, she was 91. She was the daughter of the late John and Mabel (Small) Cossaboom of White Head Island.
She is survived by her daughter Dora McLaughlin of Deep Cove, her son James P.M. (Brenda) McLaughlin of Seal Cove. Five Grandchildren Todd (Jenny), Peter, Toby (Trisha), and Robyn, and Sarah L’Aventure, as well as five Great Grandchildren Ashley, Tanner, Jane, Madison, and Mya. Mrs. McLaughlin was predeceased by her husband Mr. Glenn H. McLaughlin and one sister Mrs. Ruby Cleland.
There will be no visitation by request of the family and a private family Funeral Service Saturday September 6th, 2003, with internment to follow at the family plot at Hillside Cemetery, Seal Cove N.B..
